We were heading out for a weekend getaway. But when I opened the car door, there was another guy already sitting in the backseat.
My girlfriend, Chloe, gave me an easy smile. "This is Julian. He goes to our college. He was heading that way too, so I figured he could tag along."
Julian, an underclassman, leaned forward and smiled at me. "Don't worry, Ethan, I won't get in your way. Just really needed a ride."
I swallowed the lump in my throat and didn't say a word.
When we arrived at the hotel, I took out the keycard to unlock our room. Julian rolled his suitcase right in behind us.
Chloe acted like this was completely normal.
"It makes no sense for him to pay for his own room," she said. "We can just split this one and save money. He’ll crash on the couch."
Julian was already sitting on the edge of the bed, looking up at me innocently. "I'll take the couch. I promise I won't bother you guys."
I stood frozen in the doorway, staring at Chloe’s casual face. A wave of pure disgust washed over me.
"Fine. You two share the room. I’ll get my own."
I spun around and walked away. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
Chloe froze, then ran out into the hallway and grabbed my wrist.
"Ethan, are you serious? It's just one room! Why are you making such a big deal out of this?"
I yanked my arm away. "Just one room? Did you ever bother to mention this to me beforehand?"
"Why would I need to? Julian’s an underclassman. What's wrong with three of us sharing for one night? He isn't even asking for the bed. He’s taking the couch!"
I looked at her face, suddenly feeling like I was staring at a total stranger.
"Why didn't you tell me when you booked it? Why didn't you mention it before we got in the car? You waited until we were standing in front of the damn door to drop this on me. Chloe, what the hell do you take me for?"
"I just didn't want you overthinking things!" She frowned, looking at me like I was being totally unreasonable. "You do this every time. You make a mountain out of a molehill. Julian just needed a ride and wanted to save on hotel costs. Why do you always have to be so cynical?"
"Me? Cynical?" I let out a dry, bitter laugh. "You brought another guy into our hotel room, and because I'm not okay with it, I'm the one being cynical?"
"Then what do you want to do?"
"That's your problem, not mine." I hit the button for the elevator. "Since you care so much about his wallet, you two can stay together. Count me out."
The elevator doors slid open. I stepped inside.
Chloe stayed in the hallway. "Ethan, stop throwing a childish tantrum! Do you really have to ruin this trip for everyone?"
As the doors closed, Julian came jogging out of the room. "Chloe, maybe I should just go. I don't want you guys fighting because of me..."
The doors shut completely. I didn't care to hear how she answered him.
Down at the front desk, I asked if they had any vacancies.
The receptionist checked the system for a moment and nodded. Someone had just canceled at the last minute. A king bedroom, a hundred and twenty bucks a night.
On any normal day, I’d hesitate before spending that kind of money. Today, I didn't think twice. I pulled out my ID, handed over my card, and signed.
I took the keycard upstairs. My room was on the twelfth floor; theirs was on the ninth.
Once inside, I dropped my suitcase on the floor, threw myself onto the mattress, and stared blankly at the ceiling.
My phone kept buzzing. Texts from Chloe kept pouring in on SnapChat.
*What is your problem?*
*Did you seriously come on this trip just to cause a scene?*
*Ethan, can you just be reasonable for once?*
I didn't answer.
Ten minutes later, she sent another text:
*I talked to Julian. He’s going to stay at a local hostel. Just come back down.*
I stared at the screen for a long time. Then, my fingers moved across the keyboard:
*Chloe, we're done. Let's break up.*
I hit send and tossed the phone face-down onto the bed.
My heart was racing, my palms cold and clammy with sweat.
I left the phone alone for three minutes. When I picked it up again, Chloe had sent back two words:
*You sure?*
Looking at those two words, a bitter smile crept onto my face.
*Positive,* I texted back.
Her response was instant: *Fine. Don't come crawling back.*
I didn't reply.
I lay there for about thirty minutes until my stomach started cramping with hunger. I’d only had snacks in the car at noon, and it was past eight now.
I splashed cold water on my face, changed into a fresh jacket, and took the elevator down to grab some dinner.
There was a bustling restaurant strip near the hotel, packed with tourists for the Memorial Day weekend crowd. I walked along the sidewalk, looking for a spot without an insane wait.
When I stopped outside a spicy hot pot spot, I froze.
It wasn't because there was no line. It was because, right through the glass window, I saw Chloe and Julian. They were sitting by the window, a large pot of spicy broth bubbling away between them.
The restaurant was called Red Pepper, a place I had saved on Yelp three months ago.
I had mentioned it to Chloe so many times. Every single time, she’d agree sweetly, only to back out when the weekend came, claiming it was too far, too expensive, too crowded, or that we’d go next time.
I asked at least five times. We never went once.
And now, there she was, sitting across from her underclassman, laughing and swishing fresh beef slices into the broth.
I stood outside the door for about ten seconds. Then, I pushed it open.
"Table for how many?" the hostess asked immediately.
"Just one," I said.
She led me straight to a table right across the aisle from them.
As I took my seat, Chloe looked up and saw me.
She froze. The slice of beef on her fork dropped straight back into the broth.
Julian followed her gaze, the bright smile on his face instantly faltering before settling back into that polite, innocent mask.
I didn't give them a second glance. I took the menu and ordered my food.
While waiting for my meal, I scrolled through my phone. Out of the corner of my eye, I could feel Chloe’s gaze burning into me.
She was probably waiting for me to storm over, demand answers, and make a scene.
The old me would have.
If Chloe talked a little too long with guys from campus clubs, I’d get upset. If she liked other guys' posts on Ins, I’d ask her about it. If she looked at another guy twice on the street, I’d stay grumpy all day.
And every time, she’d frown and roll her eyes. "Ethan, can you stop being so pathologically jealous?"
I’d tell her I wasn't jealous, that she just never cared about my boundaries.
We had that exact fight a hundred times.
Now, I didn't want to say a single word.
Suddenly, Chloe stood up. She slid a plate of marbled beef over in front of Julian and scooped a generous portion of fish onto his plate, her movements exaggerated and loud.
"Eat up. Didn't you say you've been craving this for weeks?"
Julian glanced at me, dropping his voice. "Chloe, Ethan is right there... Won't he get mad if you do that?"
Chloe didn't bother lowering her voice at all. "Ignore him. He has nothing to do with me anymore."
I calmly dipped my meat into the sauce, chewed slowly, and swallowed.
Throughout the meal, Chloe kept serving Julian food, throwing deliberate sideways glances in my direction every single time.
She was waiting for my reaction.
She was waiting for me to slam my forks down, to march over with red-rimmed eyes, to lose my mind and demand an explanation just like I used to.
I gave her nothing. I just finished my dinner in complete silence.
When I got up to leave, I walked right past their table. Chloe looked up at me, her lips parting as if she wanted to say something.
I didn't stop. I pushed the door open and walked right out into the cool evening air.
The May night breeze felt crisp against my face.
I pulled my jacket zipper all the way up, blending into the crowd as I walked back to the hotel.
At the bottom of the hotel building, I bought a bottle of water at the convenience store, drank it by the entrance, and took the elevator up.
I swiped my keycard and opened the door. Just as I was about to shut it behind me, a hand pushed against the frame.
Julian was standing outside my room, wearing cheap hotel slippers, wearing that signature, apologetic puppy-dog look on his face.
"Ethan, do you have a minute? Can we talk?"

### 全文翻译I leaned against the doorframe, watching him coldly. "What do you want?"
"Can I come in?"
"Just say it here."
He bit his lower lip, looking fragile. "Ethan, I'm really sorry about earlier today. I honestly didn't know you’d be so upset. There's nothing going on between Chloe and me. I swear, I just wanted to save some cash and hitch a ride."
"It makes me feel so guilty that you two are fighting because of me. Please don't blame Chloe. It’s all my fault."
His eyes were rimmed with red, playing the victim to perfection.
As I stared at him, I noticed the zipper on his crossbody bag wasn't pulled all the way shut. The glossy corner of a small square box poked out.
An ultra-thin condom box.
Julian caught my glance. He looked down at his bag, his hands flying to yank the zipper shut. A flash of panic flickered across his face before he quickly settled back into his pitiful routine.
"Ethan, it’s not what you think. That's just mine. It has nothing to do with Chloe."
"You don't need to explain," I said flatly. "It has nothing to do with me."
"You really don't blame Chloe? Can't you two just make up? She actually looked pretty heartbroken."
"Chloe and I are broken up."
"She's nothing to me now," I added. "Whatever the two of you have going on isn't my business either. Knock yourselves out. You don't need to report your sex life to me."
Julian opened his mouth to say something else, but I slammed the door right in his face.
The second the latch clicked shut, I heard a faint, smug chuckle from the hallway.
I leaned back against the heavy wooden door, closing my eyes.
Chloe and I had been together for three years—from our sophomore year of college, all the way to our first year post-graduation.
She was my first love, my first hand-hold, my first kiss.
My mom had hated her from the start, telling me Chloe seemed self-absorbed and flaky.
I hadn't listened. I fought with my mom, packed my bags, and moved straight into Chloe's rented apartment.
It was a dreary, north-facing studio—freezing cold in the winter, stifling hot in the summer.
We crammed ourselves onto a tiny full-sized mattress, so tight we had to be careful whenever we rolled over. We fought for the bathroom in the morning and took turns waiting on the hot water heater at night.
I never once complained.
Later on, when I landed a decent job that paid slightly better than hers, I took over the lion’s share of the rent.
She always promised things would get better once her career took off. I told her not to rush, that we had time.
Three years of waiting. And what did I get?
I got her bringing another guy into our hotel room.
By the time I crawled into bed, it was nearly midnight.
The curtains weren't pulled all the way shut, letting a sliver of city light slice through the dark.
I stared at that beam of light, my mind replaying scenes from the past three years on an endless loop.
She was the one who pursued me for three months back in college. She’d wait outside my dorm every morning, bringing me breakfast sandwiches and hot coffee from the campus dining hall.
Back then, I really believed she was the one.
Slowly, everything changed.
She began complaining that I was too suffocating, too insecure.
She insisted hanging out with guys from campus fraternities was just "networking," dining alone with underclassmen was just "being a good mentor," liking half-naked gym pics on Ins was just "harmless social etiquette," and checking out other guys on the street was just "normal human instinct."
"You can't expect me to only have eyes for you, Ethan," she once told me.
She said I was overthinking things.
Now I knew the truth.
I wasn't overthinking. She was just constantly pushing my boundaries while I kept backing down.
And when I had backed up against the wall with nowhere left to run, she brought another man directly between us.
I rolled over and buried my face into the pillow.
The next morning, my eyes were terribly puffy.
I had to press a cold wet towel over them for a long time just to bring down the swelling.
I planned on exploring the Historic Old Town today. I was already here; there was no way I was spending three whole days rotting in a hotel room over a woman.
I put on fresh clothes and took the elevator down. On the ninth floor, it chimed and stopped.
The doors slid open. Chloe was standing right outside.
She froze for a moment when she saw me, then stepped inside.
Just the two of us in the elevator.
The silence hung heavy between us for a few long seconds.
She was wearing a loose white tee with a wide neckline. Right on the right side of her collarbone, a glaring, fresh hickey stood out.
She realized what I was looking at. Her hand instinctively flew up to tug her collar higher.
"A mosquito bite," she mumbled, keeping her eyes fixed forward.
A quiet chuckle slipped past my lips.
"You don't need to explain."
"Chloe, we're broken up. Who you sleep with, who kisses you, or how many marks you have on your neck—none of it is any of my business."
