Chapter 1
My best friend just bet my boyfriend that he'd cancel our ceremony. And he said yes.
Night before my Debutante Ball.
We're all packed into Kai's dorm suite. Someone smuggled in vodka, someone's blasting music too loud. It's supposed to be a celebration.
Then Ivy stands up.
She grabs three Solo cups off the table, flips them upside down, slides a ping-pong ball under one. Shuffles them around. Slow. Showing off.
Then she looks at Zane. Tips her chin up. Smiles like she already knows she's won.
"Alright, babe. Pick one. You get it right, I'll drink everything left on this table. Every. Last. Drop."
"You get it wrong — you do whatever's on my note. No backing out."
Zane leans back. Doesn't even look at the cups.
"Middle."
Ivy lifts the middle cup. Empty.
She reaches for a bottle, already tipping her head back like she's about to chug—
"Nah. You got it."
Zane reaches over. Lifts the left cup. Ball's right there.
"Moved it before you picked."
Ivy looks at him. Smiles.
But her eyes are shining.
She pulls out a folded piece of paper. Already written. Already planned.
"Well. Guess I got lucky."
She unfolds it.
"Your Promise Ceremony. Postponed. Until after college."
The room dies.
Zane just laughs. Lazy. Unbothered.
"We've been playing since freshman year. When have any of us ever punked out?"
"A bet's a bet."
This isn't the first time he's gambled with something that belongs to me.
I glance at the clock on Kai's wall. Past midnight.
My phone buzzes.
Happy birthday.
If you don't have a promised partner by graduation — you're my prom date. Still on?
I type back:
A bet's a bet.
Two seconds. Then the room loses its mind.
"Bro, are you serious right now?"
"That ceremony's not a fucking game!"
"Quinn hand-wrote three hundred invitations! Both families already booked flights! You can't just — "
Everyone's yelling over each other. Then they all whip around to Ivy.
"You're her best friend! Tell us you were joking. That wasn't a real bet."
Ivy doesn't move. Sitting in the corner, drink in hand, swirling it slow. Won't look at anyone.
"I wasn't joking."
"You all know me. I don't joke about bets."
"Cursing the table."
The second those words come out, the whole room goes dead.
Everyone gets it.
The ceremony's done.
Here's the thing.
I'm the only outsider in this room. Scholarship kid. I work part-time at the school gallery. That's it.
Zane and his crew? They live and die by The Circuit.
Underground poker. Passed down through their families at Ashford Hall for generations.
Every legacy kid proves their worth at those tables. Trust funds, family standing, futures — all riding on guts and reads.
They've been at it since freshman year. Some of their families, three generations deep.
All in. No regrets. That's the rule. The only rule.
Nobody says a word.
I pour myself a drink.
"Zane. What do you think."
He looks at me. Eyes soft with booze. Reaches over and pinches my cheek. Like always.
"Quinn. We can still do the ceremony after college. We've got time."
"But breaking a bet over a date? Jinxing everyone's luck? That's not worth it."
"You get that, right?"
Exactly what I expected.
I drop my head. Swallow it.
When I look up, I'm already smiling.
"I don't get it. But fine."
He lets out a breath. Laughs a little.
"Still got jokes. Guess you're okay."
The room goes cold. Nobody says anything.
Then the door swings open.
Silas. Nobody saw him leave.
He rolls in a three-tier cake. Candles lit. Icing reads Happy 18th Birthday, Quinn.
"Happy birthday."
Zane blinks. Then starts clapping, like oh right, that's today.
And just like that — my pre-ceremony party becomes my birthday party.
Few rounds later. Room's loud. Dice games, bad singing, someone keeps changing the playlist.
I get up. Walk over to Zane.
Reach into his pocket. Pull out the ping-pong ball.
"Why."
He smiles. That lazy half-smile.
"Knew you'd figure it out."
He pulls me in. Voice low, a little rough.
"If Ivy lost, she'd have to drink all of that. You remember last time. She ended up in the nurse's office for two days. You would've done the same thing."
I look at him.
I want to ask — did you know what was on that note? Did you plan this whole thing together?
But the words stop somewhere in my throat. What's the point.
I find Ivy.
"Why."
She looks at me. The alcohol's burning behind her eyes. Wild. Reckless.
"Because I love Zane."
"And I'm not sorry. I've held back for you for seven years. I'm done."
The answer I expected. The tone I didn't.
My best friend. Since we were eleven.
I throw my head back. Take a long, burning swallow.
Everything feels absurd. Pathetic. Like a bad drama I somehow ended up in.
I reach for the bottle again.
A hand presses down on mine. Warm. Steady.
Silas. Right behind me. Didn't hear him coming.
He leans in. Close enough that his breath brushes my ear.
"Got your answers?"
"Then three days from now — you're walking down that aisle with me."
Chapter 2
I look up at Silas.
"A bet's a bet. But my birthday literally just started. You really that sure I already lost?"
He grins. Slow. Knowing.
"Three years I've been waiting. One more night won't kill me."
I stand up. Turn to Ivy. Loud enough for the whole room.
"Ivy. I want a bet. You and me. Right now."
The music cuts out for a beat.
Everyone freezes.
Kai and Keller snap out of it first. Start banging on the table.
"Yes! Zane lost the ceremony — Quinn can win it back!"
"Bro, I already got my suit fitted! You're not wasting that! One more round, let's go!"
Zane's face goes flat.
"Quinn. Stop it."
"I said a bet's a bet. Ceremony's after college. Done."
Right on cue, Ivy covers her mouth. Gags like she's about to throw up.
Zane grabs her arm. Steadies her. Turns to me, voice cold and clipped.
"She's wasted. Don't pull her into another bet. You wanna play that bad, pick someone else."
I watch him hold her. Steady her. Like she's the one who needs protecting.
That last shred of hope in my chest shrivels up a little more.
"Fine."
I grab the dice cup off the table. Shake it hard.
"Then you. High or low?"
I stare into his eyes. Something reckless surges up in me. All or nothing.
Here's the thing.
There's nothing in that cup. No dice.
I'm not trying to win. I'm trying to see what he does.
If he says yes — if he gives me one fair shot — I'll burn every last bit of luck I have to undo Silas's bet.
I'll wait. However long it takes.
We're all gamblers when it comes to love. Aren't we?
But Zane's face darkens.
He looks at me. Cold. Disgusted.
"You lose, so you just keep pushing till you win? Seriously, Quinn? Where's your dignity?"
Got it.
Bitterness floods in.
"You won't even take one bet with me?"
"You really think I'm trying to trap you?"
Whatever warmth was left in me drains out. Slow. Final.
I lift the cup. Hold it right in front of his face. Tip it open.
Empty.
Everyone stares at the hollow cup.
A few seconds of dead silence. Then Kai mutters under his breath.
"Empty cup... that's an automatic loss."
I force a smile. Look Zane right in the eye.
"I was never trying to beat you. So why are you acting like I'm some kind of threat?"
Zane chokes.
He stares at the empty cup. Something shifts behind his eyes. Like it finally clicks.
He reaches for my hand.
"I just didn't want you to lose—"
You already made me lose. Everything.
I pull away.
His hand hangs in midair. Then he recovers. Smooth. Easy smile back in place.
"I know you want this. But it's just a few years. You don't trust us? You don't trust what we have?"
"Or are you the one who's gonna bail? Because I won't. Not ever."
I almost laugh.
Three sentences, and somehow I'm the one who doesn't believe in us.
The tension spirals. Finally someone stands up.
"Okay, okay. It's past three. Let's just call it."
Everyone bolts up like they've been released from jail.
Zane pulls Ivy to her feet. Turns to me.
"I'll walk her back first, then come get you. It's on the way."
I smile.
"Don't bother. I'm going with Silas."
He opens his mouth—
Silas is already at the elevator. Holding the door.
"Quinn. Let's go."
I walk in. The doors close behind us.
Chapter 3
I wake up with my head pounding and my phone blowing up.
Quinn what's going on with the venue??
Quinn, your aunt keeps asking if the ceremony is still happening or not
Quinn Marie Callahan, you better call me back RIGHT NOW and explain why the hell you're canceling.
My head is killing me.
I sit there for a long time before it sinks in. Last night actually happened.
Three years I waited for that ceremony. Gone. Over a stupid cup game.
I press my fingers into my temples. Open my phone.
99+ unread.
I play Ivy's voice memo.
"Quinn... what I said last night? I meant every word. So. Yeah. Heads up."
Below that, a text from Silas.
Left an apple on your nightstand. Eat it. And don't forget — a bet's a bet.
Zane's chat? Nothing. Blank.
Someone threw up a group photo on their story from last night. Caption: happy birthday forever crew
Warm filter. Everyone grinning.
I'm standing in front of the cake, candlelight on my face. I almost look like I'm having a good time.
Someone replied underneath: wait so when's the ceremony lol
They wrote back: haha shh mind ur business
I take a breath. Call Zane.
"Quinn?"
In the background — Ivy's voice. "Zane, my head's killing me..."
He doesn't let me get a word in.
"Hey — can you deal with the family stuff? Just let everyone know. And go by the office, sort out the Ball setup, whatever the fees are I'll cover it."
"I can't get away right now. Ivy's been throwing up all morning, her stomach's a mess. I'm taking her to the nurse."
He doesn't even say sorry.
He just assumes. The way he always does. That I'll handle it. That I'll say okay. That I'll clean up his mess the same way I have for three years.
"Okay."
I hang up.
I grab an empty box. Start pulling out everything that's his. Everything that's us.
The scrapbook he stayed up all night making sophomore year. Little notes in his messy handwriting. Ticket stubs. Polaroids.
There's a dried rose petal tucked inside from our first anniversary. I barely touch it and it crumbles to red dust between my fingers.
The matching mugs we made in ceramics. His wobbly Z&Q scratched into the bottom.
Faded now.
And then there's the bracelet.
Freshman year. Zane's first real Circuit game. Everyone told him the table he picked was garbage. Nobody backed him.
I gave him everything I had saved up. Slid it across like it was nothing.
When he won, he lifted me off the ground and kissed me in front of everyone.
"Quinn, I'm gonna get you the most beautiful bracelet you've ever seen."
"Something that lasts forever. That's what you are to me."
Three years. Over a thousand days.
I thought we already won.
Didn't think he'd gamble away our future over a party game.
I pack it all in. One thing at a time.
Carry the box downstairs. Leave it by the donation bin near the dorm entrance.
A sophomore walking by stops dead.
"Wait — you're throwing all this out? This stuff is so nice though!"
I smile.
"It's yours if you want it."
She stares at me like I've lost my mind. Starts pulling things out carefully.
I slip the Promise Ring off my finger. Drop it in.
"Oh. This too."
She just stands there. Mouth open. No words.
I walk across campus to the admin building.
The woman at the events desk looks up when I come in alone.
"Quinn? Just you today?"
"Yeah — he's handling the family stuff. Letting everyone know we moved the date."
Her whole face relaxes.
"Oh thank god. I thought you were pulling the whole thing. So when do you want it moved to? I can fix it right now."
"Day after tomorrow. Thanks."
I step outside. The sun's too bright.
I look up at the sky.
Something that's been sitting on my chest for years — I feel it finally lift.
Three years of dreaming.
I'm awake now.
