I must bring her out immediately. It's too dangerous here. Hurry up. I'll wait for you outside." Felix throws a wet blanket at me and leaves without hesitation. But what he doesn't know is that the blanket has been soaked in alcohol. I'm trapped in the fire and die here, along with the pup inside me. Chapter 1 I felt my heart break as I watched my fiance, Felix Hoffman, walk away with another woman in his arms, each heartbeat sending pain through my chest. Mia Langley only had to playfully tug on his arm, and he agreed to come to the castle with her. I begged desperately, tears rolling down my face, but he remained completely unmoved. I was Felix's fiancee, the person he was going to spend the rest of his life with, yet he didn't believe me and thought I was lying. He scolded, "Why did you only remember you're pregnant now? Can you please stop being such a jealous bitch? You know Mia is hurt. I need to bring her out immediately." I shook my head as hard as I could. "I didn't lie. You have to believe me." A flicker of hesitation appeared on his face, then it was gone. As soon as Felix heard Mia moving, his attention shifted to her, and he forgot all about me. Mia shrank into his arms, looking scared. "Felix, my leg really hurts. If I don't get it treated soon, will it get worse? What if I can't walk normally after this? The fire is so big, and my eyes hurt from looking at it. I'm scared!" Felix lowered his head to look at her, his eyes filled with tenderness. His voice was soft when he spoke. "Don't be. I'm here with you. You'll be alright." Watching him show someone else his caring side stabbed me in the heart. Mia suddenly handed me the wet blanket she was holding. "If you're scared, drape this over your body." The more caring she was, the colder Felix's gaze became. "It's too dangerous here. Hurry up. I'll wait for you outside." Felix quickly ran out of patience. He pushed my hand away and walked away without a second glance. In order to live and protect my pup, I had to pull myself together. I draped the blanket over myself, wanting to follow them. But I had only taken a few steps when the fire engulfed the blanket and me. I quickly threw the blanket aside and rolled around on the ground. After a brief struggle, the fire finally went out. But almost every part of me except my face was badly burned, and the burns stung intensely. That was when I realized the blanket had been soaked in alcohol. Mia's kindness was a facade. She didn't give me the blanket out of goodwill. She wanted to kill me. Suddenly, I heard a loud bang. A heavy object came crashing down from above, blocking the escape passage. I tried my hardest to push it away, but to no avail, as my last hope of escaping this place faded with it. With my hands trembling, I called for help. The dispatcher quickly picked up. After the dispatcher heard what was going on, she tried to calm me down. "Ms. Benson, don't panic. Find a place far away from the fire and stay there. Cover your nose and mouth, and crouch down low. The werewolves coming to rescue you are already on the way. Stay in contact with me until they get there, okay?" I quietly acknowledged her and followed her instructions, dragging my injured body upstairs toward the area where the fire was weaker. But the fire spread much faster than I expected. I started gasping for air, then asked anxiously, "It's getting more dangerous here. Can you hurry up?" She apologized and said patiently, "Try looking for another exit." This castle had been abandoned for nearly a century. The walls were old and badly damaged, and they could collapse at any moment. To keep outsiders from getting in, the doors and windows were boarded up. Other than the passage that had just been blocked, the only way out was through the roof. When she heard that there was a roof, she asked, "How far is the rooftop from the ground? Are there bushes or anything that could cushion the fall?" I stood at the edge and looked down. It was pitch-black, and the bottom was impossible to see. Jumping from this height would mean certain death. The dispatcher could tell from my silence and sighed deeply. "You said you went there with Felix, right? Then he must still be nearby. Why don't you call him and ask him to come back for you? That might be the fastest and most effective way." Even she knew this was the best way, but Felix hadn't even looked back or shown any concern for me after he left. He did say he would wait for me outside, though. Maybe he would return to save me. Holding on to that last bit of hope, I kept calling Felix. There was no answer, so I kept trying. On my eighth try, he finally picked up. "Felix, please save me. This place…" Chapter 2 Before I could tell him about the blocked passage, Felix cut me off, his voice impatient. "First, you pretended to be with pup. Now, you're acting all pitiful. Chloe, what the hell is wrong with you today? "Do you really need someone to accompany you just to crawl out of the passage? You're acting like some unweaned pup. Stop messing around. It's really dangerous there. Come out now!" Mia's sobbing voice came through the phone. "Felix, my body hurts. Did the fire burn me?" "Mia needs to get checked out. I'll be taking the car. Call for someone to come get you, okay?" With that, Felix hung up. Even now, he still thought I was joking with my life. I couldn't help but smile bitterly, finding the whole situation absurd. Our relationship had made it this far because I was the one who had painstakingly kept it together. I kept putting in the effort, trying to close the distance between us, but Felix shut himself away. He refused to come out, and he wouldn't let me in. I fell in love with Felix at first sight, and my dream was to marry him. A year ago, Felix was poisoned with Wolfsbane, so he could only lie weakly on the bed, unable to get up. Mia was filled with disdain when she saw him that way, so she fled to another territory that very night and threw herself into another Alpha's arms. Only I stayed by his side, caring for him day and night. I swallowed my pride and knelt before skilled healers from all over the territory, begging them to cure Felix. All my money and jewelry, even the house my parents left me, went toward paying for his treatment. I had always been the one who gave more in this relationship. Maybe my sincerity moved Felix. The first thing he did after he was able to stand again was propose to me. I was so overwhelmed that tears spilled down my face, and I couldn't even get the words out. I just kept nodding. Even though Felix was still distant, he was willing to stay by my side, and that was enough for me. About a month ago, Felix started coming home later and later. At first, I didn't think much of it. I simply assumed he was too busy. Then my birthday arrived. Before he left that day, I smoothed out the wrinkles on his collar. "Are you going to be home late again today?" Felix paused for a few seconds before realizing what day it was. He kissed my forehead. "No, I'll be home early to celebrate your birthday with you." His words had me in a good mood all day. I prepared a cake and a spread of his favorite food. But I waited all day and into the night, and he never came back. With half an hour left until my birthday was over, I couldn't stand it anymore, so I called him. Felix explained, "A werewolf got hurt, so I got to stay at the hospital to take care of her." Confused, I asked, "They have a healer to do that, right?" "It's fine that you don't care if someone gets hurt. But don't start making snide remarks." Even though I couldn't see Felix's face, I knew he was probably frowning right then. I didn't want to make him angry, so I softened my voice and asked cautiously, "Can you still make it back before midnight?" His answer was a half-hearted "I'll try." But Felix was still nowhere to be seen when the clock struck 12:00 am. My hopes were completely crushed, and I felt a painful ache in my chest. My phone buzzed, and I thought it was a message from him. But when I unlocked my phone, it was a photo from Mia. In it, a hand was holding an exquisite liquor flask engraved with her name. I didn't pay much attention to the gift. Instead, my eyes fell on the hand holding it. I knew it was Felix's. "Felix made this reunion gift just for me, spending a whole month working on it himself. After all these years, he still remembered that I like drinking." I didn't reply to her provocative message. Instead, I just sat there, staring at the screen blankly as my eyes slowly turned red. At 3:00 am, Felix finally returned home, his clothes reeking of alcohol. When he saw me sitting at the dining table, he asked, "Why are you still up at this hour?" Instead of answering his question, I said, "Why are you back so late?" "The werewolf invited me to dinner to thank me. I couldn't reject her." So, this was why he could reject me without a second thought? I couldn't hold it in anymore. I choked out. "Do you remember that today, no, yesterday was my birthday?" Felix looked upset by my sudden outburst, his voice turning frosty. "It's just a birthday. If you really care about it so much, I'll make it up to you another day." He had prepared a gift for Mia's return, yet he couldn't even wish me a happy birthday. It wasn't fair. I held back my tears. "Mia is back, isn't she?" The question clearly hit a nerve with Felix. His gaze was like a dagger, fixed on me, his patience with me completely gone. "Chloe, I've been by your side every single day. What more could you possibly want?" Yeah, what more could I want? Was it because I never got the same love in return? Chapter 3 Our argument ended in silence. Unwilling to fight me further, Felix turned and went back to his room, leaving me to clean up the mess on the dining table. Yet, tears blurred my eyes, and I couldn't see anything clearly. Barely half an hour passed before Felix changed into a fresh set of clothes and hurried out of the house. Mia had called him crying, saying she was drunk and couldn't find her way home. I suddenly remembered what happened when I first moved in with Felix. One night, I went out for a walk, but the place was so big that I got lost. I cried as I called Felix for help, hoping he would come pick me up. But even over the phone, I could hear how annoyed he was. "Are your eyes just for show? Why are you asking me? I'm not a map." I wandered around outside alone for five hours. The scar on my leg came from that night when I fell and slammed my knee against a rock so hard that it felt like the bone had shattered. By the time I got home, Felix was fast asleep. He never once asked if I was okay. Back then, I blamed myself for everything, thinking that it was my fault for being careless. But later, I realized that if a person truly loved you, they would never ignore you. The strange feeling in my body brought me back to reality. My strength was suddenly gone. My whole body went limp, and I couldn't stop myself from collapsing to the ground. I remembered the bottle of water Mia had handed me before we came in. At the same time, the flames had already reached the roof. Panic spread as I struggled to pull out my phone and dial Felix's number again and again. "Felix, the water…" "Just find some water yourself. Do you have to trouble me with everything?" "No, I…" "Enough, Chloe. You can't ask me to do everything for you. I'm busy too. Just try to be independent, okay?" Felix hung up once again. He had never had the patience to listen to me finish my words. If he could, he probably never wanted to talk to me at all. Mia sent me another photo. My fiance was down on one knee, carefully holding her foot as if it were a precious treasure while he examined her injury. I laughed bitterly. So, this was what he was willing to go out of his way for. There was no time for me to wallow in self-pity. The flames were creeping in fast, nearly engulfing my body. I had to make a choice between jumping from the rooftop or staying where I was. I placed my hand over my belly and gently caressed my unborn pup. "I'm so sorry for being unable to protect you." In the end, I decided to jump from the roof. The pain would only last for a moment compared to staying here and being swallowed by the flames. Before I did, I sent Felix one last message. "Felix, I hope my leaving brings you the happiness you truly deserve. Goodbye." When I opened my eyes again, I was right beside Felix. There was feigned concern on Mia's face. "Chloe kept calling you. Could something have happened to her?" Felix patted her shoulder. "Nothing will happen to her. She even dared to go out for a walk alone in the middle of the night. Crawling through a passage is nothing compared to that, especially since the fire wasn't even that bad back then. "Chloe must've gotten out. She was just arguing with me because she wanted some water." Mia's eyes flickered. "Water?" Felix nodded. Even though Mia knew Felix wouldn't leave her, she still pretended to be disappointed, lowering her head. "Are you going to go back for her?" "Nope. She's fine. You're the one who was hurt. You need my help, so I'll stay with you." Even though I was already dead, his words still hurt me. If I really were fine, why would I have begged him for help again and again? If we were comparing who needed him more, I needed him more, both because of my injuries and because of who I was to him. Was my life really that insignificant to him? When he was poisoned, I gave up everything for him. Now all I got in return was his cruelty. Felix couldn't turn down a talk with Arthur Hoffman, his Alpha brother. So, even though he had just promised Mia not to leave her side, he had to step away for a while. "Felix, how could you take people to that abandoned castle without permission? You started a fire too. It was so dangerous. What if someone had died?" Felix looked completely unconcerned, not taking Arthur's words seriously. "Don't worry, everyone got out safely. So what if it burned down? At least it won't be dangerous anymore." Arthur fell silent for a moment. He stared into Felix's eyes and asked, "Everyone? Does that include Chloe? She called for help, but the werewolves who went there to save her still can't find her." The smile instantly vanished from Felix's face as he stared at Arthur in disbelief.
