Chapter 1

I grew up in the projects. Eighteen years of it. Then the Whitfields found me and told me I was their real daughter. Now I'm halfway through my welcome-home dinner, and Derek Whitfield suddenly stands up and points straight at me. "Nora, you're not my sister. You're nothing but a fraud." His voice leaves no room for doubt. "When the kidnapper took my baby sister eighteen years ago, I secretly switched her back before he noticed. So Mia is my real sister." Right on cue, Mia's eyes fill with tears. "Nora, I get that you want the Whitfield life. But you can't just pretend you're family." Every head in the hall turns toward me. I'm about to fire back. Then, suddenly, I hear my cat's voice inside my head. [Derek and Mia already paid off a witness. They've got fake evidence ready to drive you out of the Whitfield family.] [And here's the kicker. Derek isn't a Whitfield by blood either. The real Whitfield son is the older brother you grew up relying on in the projects.] I freeze. I see the suspicion in Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield's eyes. I keep my voice calm: "You're right. I'm not your biological sister." "My real brother is still back in the projects." …… The words are barely out of my mouth. Derek immediately raises his voice: "She admitted it herself!" "I told you all along, I switched Mia back that night. Mia's the real Whitfield daughter." "She spent eighteen years in the projects and wormed her way in here for the money!" Mia sighs helplessly: "I can understand you envying the Whitfield life. But you can't lie." The guests' whispers explode instantly. Mrs. Whitfield covers her mouth, looking at me in disbelief: "Did we really bring home the wrong girl after all?" Derek's lips curl into a faint smirk. "If you know you're a fake, do the smart thing and get out of this house." I clench my fists and lift my eyes to Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield: "I only said Derek isn't my biological brother." "I never said I wasn't the Whitfields' daughter." No one says a word. Every head snaps toward me. Mr. Whitfield frowns: "What are you saying?" Derek's tone carries a flustered panic: "What are you talking about?!" "I just told the truth about you being a fake." "How does that turn into you accusing me of not being a Whitfield?" Mia chimes in: "You can't just make things up about my brother because you're hurting." "He's given everything to this family for years." "How could he not be Mom and Dad's son?" Mrs. Whitfield's face darkens too: "Derek is the son I raised for over twenty years." "You can't just throw words like that around." Just then, the cat's voice comes back into my head: [The whole thing was planned by Mrs. Garrett, the family nanny.] [She had a son and a daughter of her own. She swapped Derek in for your real brother, then sent her daughter in to replace you. ] [Derek and Mia are both her flesh and blood!] Hearing this, a chill crawls up my back. I look Mrs. Whitfield straight in the eye: "Raising someone for twenty years doesn't make them your biological child." "Mom, did you really never notice anything off?" Derek's tone turns vicious: "Mom and Dad raised me for over twenty years. And now you're making up a whole story about where I came from? What the hell are you trying to pull?" I let out a cold laugh: "Mrs. Garrett swapped out both Whitfield children with her own hands and slipped her own son and daughter into this family." "You and Mia. Both of you are her biological children."

Chapter 2

The moment I say it, a collective gasp sweeps through the room. "The nanny's kids? That's horrible!" "No wonder those two always stick together. They're actual siblings!" "So the Whitfields raised someone else's kids for eighteen years?" Mrs. Whitfield sways, catching hold of the dining table beside her to stay upright: "Mrs. Garrett has always been such a decent, honest woman. How could she do something so evil?" Derek explodes in fury: "You'd make up a lie this vicious just to stay in this family?!" "Mom, Dad, don't believe her. She's jealous of me and Mia. She wants to tear the Whitfields apart!" Derek jabs a finger in my face, sneering loudly: "And do you have any proof for any of this?" Mia sighs: "Besides, you've been in the projects all these years. How would you even know about Mrs. Garrett?" "I bet you've been planning to smear us for a long time." The guests hesitate and murmur among themselves. "You can't just say things like that. Calling them the nanny's children with no proof is way out of line." "Maybe she really is jealous of the Whitfields and made up a story to get back at the two of them." Mrs. Whitfield's expression, already softened, hardens again: "You've got no evidence. Everything you said today is baseless slander." Seeing this, Derek grows even more smug: "Get on your knees right now and apologize to me and Mia." "Otherwise I'm calling the cops and reporting you for defamation!" My eyes lock sharply onto Derek: "If you think I'm defaming you." "Then let's do a DNA test." The words have barely left my mouth when the ballroom doors swing open from the outside. "DNA test. I've got it right here." Mrs. Garrett's voice carries clearly across the room. Derek sees who it is and raises his voice at once: "Mrs. Garrett, perfect timing!" "Tell my parents exactly what happened back then!" Mia wipes at her tears too, staring at Mrs. Garrett hopefully. Mrs. Whitfield stares blankly at the nanny who's been with the family for years, her voice trembling: "Mrs. Garrett, what's that in your hand?" Mrs. Garrett walks slowly to the center of the hall and lifts her eyes to look at me. Her voice is hesitant: "Ma'am, when you brought Nora home a few days ago, I felt something was off." "I secretly collected a few strands of her hair and had them tested." She holds the report out. "The report is clear. She's not your biological daughter." The guests start talking all at once. "A DNA test can't be faked, can it?" Derek whips his head around to me and laughs, arrogant: "You hear that! Even Mrs. Garrett has evidence!" "You're not a Whitfield daughter at all. Now you've given me proof. I'm calling the cops right now!" Mrs. Whitfield sways again: "The report is right in front of you. What else do you have to say?" Mr. Whitfield's face is stone-cold. His fists clench tight as he looks at me with disappointment: "You swore up and down you were the Whitfields' daughter. Are you still going to keep making excuses?" The cat's voice rings clearly in my head: [This report is forged. It doesn't even have a stamp.] I take in the scornful eyes around me. I raise my hand and point at the report in Mrs. Garrett's hand: "Look at it carefully. There's no official lab certification on this report." Everyone leans in to look. Guests nearby crane their necks to inspect it, and someone immediately mutters: "There really is no stamp..." "How can a real DNA report be missing an official seal? This is clearly not up to code." Mrs. Garrett's hand jerks back. She instinctively hides the report behind her. Derek's smile freezes on his face: "The numbers are right there in black and white. Quit nitpicking!" I laugh, dry and short: "Without proper lab certification, this report proves nothing." "There's a simple way to sort out real from fake. All of us go to a certified lab right now and get fresh blood drawn." I turn to look at Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield, keeping my voice steady: "I'm not afraid of the test. If you cooperate, we can get this done within half an hour." "Then we'll know the truth." Mr. Whitfield hesitates for a moment: "If Nora is willing, then let's redo the test." The moment he says it, Derek panics: "I'm not going! Why should we play along with her nonsense?" "Who knows if she's already paid off someone at the lab to frame us!" I step forward slowly: "You keep saying I'm defaming you." "Now the chance to clear your name is right in front of you, and you won't take it." "Or are you just scared?" Derek's face turns pale. He suddenly takes a step back. "I'm not going... I'm scared of needles." Mia's eyes fill with tears in an instant. She suddenly runs onto the balcony and climbs up on the railing: "None of you believe me or Derek. You're all forcing me to get tested. I might as well just jump!" Before the words are even out, she leans halfway over the railing. One hand is already gripping the outside of the railing, like she's about to let go. "Mia!" Mrs. Whitfield is scared out of her wits. Her face goes white as she rushes over and locks both arms around Mia's waist: "Don't do anything stupid! I believe you. I believe everything you're saying." "No more tests. No one's going to force you, okay?" Mrs. Whitfield turns her head back to me, her eyes full of blame: "Mia's fragile. You just wouldn't let it go." "What if something had happened to her? Could you live with that?"

Chapter 3

Mrs. Whitfield holds the sobbing Mia: "What are the odds of two siblings being switched at the same time?" "We specifically chose one of the best private maternity hospitals in the city." "How could outsiders just walk in and swap two newborns whenever they felt like it?" Mr. Whitfield nods, his face grim: "That's right. The babies were under constant supervision." "How could Mrs. Garrett swap two babies right under everyone's noses? You're pushing this lie way too far." The guests chime in one after another. "That's right. Hospital security is that tight. How could two babies be swapped so easily?" "Swapping one is already hard enough. A whole pair? It doesn't add up." Seeing everyone taking his side, Derek's panic vanishes: "You're just jealous of me and Mia being in the Whitfield family. You'll do anything to blow it all up." Mrs. Garrett steps forward too, sighing like she's the victim: "I'm just a nanny. How could I possibly switch two newborn babies?" I stand quietly in place. The cat's voice comes back in my head: [Back then Mrs. Garrett paid off an orderly on shift that night, and swapped the babies during a scheduled blackout in the middle of the night.] [The doctor who delivered Mrs. Whitfield's baby knew the whole time. Get the doctor here, and you can expose them on the spot.] I lift my eyes and look at them coldly: "On your own, no. But you bribed an orderly in the maternity ward to help you from the inside." "The doctor from back then witnessed the whole thing." "If you don't believe me, bring her here right now. We'll settle it face to face." Derek's pupils shrink. Then he sneers dismissively: "Still running your mouth." "After all these years, where are you going to find the doctor?" Mr. Whitfield turns to the butler at his side and orders in a low voice: "Dr. Warren was in charge of the delivery at that private hospital back then. Send someone to bring her here." The butler answers and hurries out. The ballroom goes dead silent. Derek's fingers unconsciously grip the hem of his suit. He forces himself to stay calm and murmurs to Mia: "Don't be scared. She's just pulling some random doctor into this to sound convincing. There's no real evidence." Mia buries her head, tears falling nonstop. Mrs. Garrett stands off to the side, head down, shoulders slightly tense. In just twenty minutes. The butler leads a middle-aged woman into the hall. It's Dr. Warren. Mrs. Whitfield immediately stands and greets her politely: "Dr. Warren, thank you for coming on such short notice. There's an old matter we'd like to ask you about." The cat's urgent voice slams into my head: [Bad news! Mrs. Garrett already got to the doctor early and paid her off with a huge sum of money.] [She's also using her grandson's school placement as leverage. She won't tell the truth today!] My heart sinks. Dr. Warren draws in a deep breath and turns to Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield. "Sir, ma'am, I was the doctor who handled Mrs. Whitfield's delivery. I was there from start to finish." "The delivery room was under extremely tight security. There was no way for outsiders to swap the babies." Derek immediately jumps on it and asks loudly: "Dr. Warren, so what Nora said about the nanny swapping the babies, it's all a lie, right?" Dr. Warren nods hard: "I put the ID bracelets on the babies with my own hands. No one could have taken a baby out at any point." "Nora cannot be the Whitfields' biological daughter."
