Synopsis
Emily Carter, an art history scholar, clears her late family's mansion and uncovers her slave-owning ancestors' secret: her great-great-great aunt Claire was sold to New Orleans slave markets, while her sister Elizabeth replaced her in a revered family portrait to hide the crime. Emily tracks Claire's descendants, befriends elder Martha, and gathers century-old letters, auction logs, and Elizabeth's guilt-ridden diary. She donates the deceptive portrait to a Black history museum, renames herself Emily Freeman to atone, and builds the Claire Freeman Museum plus a scholarship for Black history students. Her advocacy inspires many to confront their families' buried racist pasts. Long after her passing, generations still visit the portrait, learning truth and reconciliation over inherited shame.
