Synopsis

At the one-month baby celebration, my daughter-in-law held out the precious grandson she'd conceived only after six rounds of IVF and asked me to name him. Instead, I pulled out a bottle of weed-killer poison and a length of rope, and told her to pick one. She was horrified. "Mom, today is Bobby's one-month celebration. Choosing something like this is bad luck." The online comments were tearing me apart too. Your son has a low sperm count. You have no idea how much your daughter-in-law suffered to finally have this baby, and now you actually want to kill him?

Chapter 1

At the one-month baby celebration, my daughter-in-law held the precious grandson she'd conceived after six rounds of IVF and asked me to name him. Instead, I pulled out a bottle of weed-killer poison and a rope, and told her to pick one. My daughter-in-law was shocked. "Mom, today is Bobby's one-month celebration. Picking something like this is bad luck." The online comments were cursing me as brain-dead too. Your son has a low sperm count, and your daughter-in-law went through who knows how much suffering to have this child, and now you want to kill him? Your family has been the only son for three generations. If you really kill this child, you'll wipe out the entire family line! Stop making a scene and hurry up and bring out the solid-gold baby bracelet you prepared for your grandson. Maybe if your daughter-in-law is happy enough, she'll do IVF again and give you a granddaughter, so you'll have one of each! I just gave a cold laugh. "Last night an ancestor visited me in a dream, saying an outside bloodline had gotten in, and this child is absolutely not of our family's blood!" "How dare she pass off a bastard as my grandson. He deserves to die!" With that, I snatched up the weed-killer poison from the table and shoved it toward the child's mouth! ... "Mom! Have you lost your mind! This is your own grandson!" My daughter-in-law, Brooklyn, screamed in fright and threw herself over the child to shield him. I only held up the bottle of weed-killer poison, my face blank. "I'm not crazy. An outside bloodline got in. He's not my grandson, he's a bastard!" "A bastard deserves to die!" Clutching the last of the poison, I reached out to grab the child. But Brooklyn shielded him and backed away several steps, tears pouring down her face as she cried out to me. "Mom! I know you don't like me! You think I'm too skinny, no good for bearing children." "But your son is the one with the low sperm count!" "On top of that, I went through six rounds of IVF before I finally gave birth to Bobby." "If you want to touch him, you'll have to step over my dead body first!" Tears hung at the corners of Brooklyn's eyes. But I thought she made a very good point. After all, what kind of decent woman would use a bastard to muddy the Whitney family bloodline? I nodded in agreement. "Fine!" "Then I'll send you down to hell first, and after that I'll send this bastard down to keep you company!" I grabbed the weed-killer poison and shoved it toward Brooklyn's mouth. The relatives nearby, terrified by how deranged I looked, immediately jumped up to stop me. "Wanda, calm down!" "How much did Brooklyn suffer to give birth to this child? How could he not be your own grandson?" "We all know you don't like Brooklyn, but she's been with your son for so long, and now she's even had his child." "For the child's sake, stop making a scene!" Even the online comments were telling me to stop losing it. Brooklyn loves your son so much, how could this child not be your family's blood? Do you know how much suffering IVF is? She gritted her teeth and did it six times, all to carry on your family line! Please, stop making a scene. If you keep this up, you'll destroy a perfectly good family! Only I knew the truth in my heart. I wasn't destroying this family, I was saving it! Brooklyn had suffered a lot to give birth. And I was very grateful she'd been willing to do IVF for my son with his low sperm count. But the ancestor would never lie to me! He told me in my dream last night that an outside bloodline had gotten in, and this child could never be of the Whitney family's blood. The bastard impersonating my grandson deserved to die!

Chapter 2

I wrenched myself free of my relatives' hold. I grabbed the rope beside me, ready to rush over and strangle the child in Brooklyn's arms. When they saw I meant it, my relatives went pale with fright. They held me back, swearing up and down. "Wanda, Brooklyn is an honest woman. She'd never cheat on your son!" "Calm down! Today is your grandson's one-month celebration. Do you really want to destroy this family?" Then they hurried to call my son, telling him to come back. "Justin, where are you? Get to the hotel right now!" "Your mother has lost her mind. She insists the child Brooklyn risked her life to give birth to isn't her grandson, and she wants to kill him!" Unfortunately, before she could finish, I was already standing in front of her with the hemp rope in my hand. She stared at the hemp rope in my grip, thick as a baby's arm, less than half a meter from her. At any second I could lunge and strangle her with it. The relative who'd tipped off my son was so scared she started stammering. "Wanda, look, I'm not saying the child Brooklyn had isn't your son's." "And even if it isn't, that's got nothing to do with me!" "It's not like I put her up to cheating on your son..." But I went around her and headed straight for the kitchen. Weed-killer poison could spill, and a rope still had to be pulled tight. A cleaver was easier. I grabbed a bone-cleaving blade from the kitchen and went back to the banquet hall. I moved to strike at Brooklyn and the child as the relatives huddled around comforting them. But a pair of large hands clamped down hard on my wrist before I could. "Mom! Haven't you made enough of a scene?" "I know you've never liked Brooklyn, but that doesn't give you the right to slander her by saying her child isn't mine!" "You're spreading these lies in front of all these relatives. How is my child supposed to face the world when he grows up?" But I stood my ground, righteous as ever. "Bah! A bastard pretending to be my grandson, and he thinks he gets to live like a person?" "I'll send him to hell right now!" "Maybe the King of Hell will be kind and let this bastard reincarnate a little sooner!" I raised the bone-cleaving blade and swung it again at the child in Brooklyn's arms. But my son threw himself in front of Brooklyn and the child. I pulled the blow back as fast as I could, but the blade still caught my son's shoulder. Blood soaked through his coat, and I was horrified. I grabbed his hand at once, wanting to get him to the hospital. But my son threw my hand off. Clutching his wounded shoulder, he looked at me as if I were a stranger. "Mom, I used to think you just didn't like Brooklyn, and that you couldn't bring yourself to love her child either." "That's why you made up that lie about an ancestor visiting you in a dream, to humiliate her." "But I never imagined you could be this vicious, that you'd actually try to kill mine and Brooklyn's child!" "I don't need your fake concern taking me to the hospital. Get out of my child's one-month celebration now! I don't have a mother like you, and my child doesn't have a grandmother as vicious as you!" I couldn't believe it. He was actually driving me out for the sake of this bastard! The online comments gloated right along. Serves you right for going crazy and slandering people! Happy now? Your own son won't claim you anymore. Just apologize to your son and his wife! They're not really blaming you, they just can't stand you causing a scene at the baby's one-month celebration. As long as you're sincere and bring out that big gold bracelet again, you can still be one happy family! But I clenched my fists. My husband died young, and I raised my son alone, being both father and mother to him. Only I know how much I suffered. You could say my son is my whole life! Him disowning me is no different from killing me. But to make me accept this bastard as my grandson... I couldn't accept it! I wiped away my tears and told my son. "I'll go." "But this bastard has to die today!" The moment I said it, I seized the chance while Brooklyn wasn't looking and snatched the child from her arms. Then I ran for the hotel doors like a madwoman.

Chapter 3

"Mom! You've lost your mind!" "Give the baby back!" My son chased after me. Brooklyn had burst into panicked tears too. She called the hotel front desk, sobbing to them. "My mother-in-law has gone insane and snatched my child! She's trying to kill him!" "Please! Please don't let her leave with the baby!" The hotel reacted like it was facing a crisis, immediately locking the front doors to keep me from getting away. They called in the security guards to surround and cut me off. Seeing my son about to catch up with me, I had no choice but to duck into the elevator and press the button for the top floor. Soon the elevator stopped at the stairwell on the top floor. Still clutching the baby, I stumbled and shoved open the door to the rooftop. I turned and locked it, sealing the pursuers out completely, and only then did I have a moment to catch my breath while holding the child. Three minutes later, my son and Brooklyn caught up. They grabbed at the door and found it wouldn't open, and, afraid I would harm the child, they pounded on it frantically and shouted from the other side. "Mom! Calm down, calm down!" "I've been by Brooklyn's side the whole time, from her pregnancy through every prenatal checkup. She has absolutely never done anything to wrong me!" "Condemning her and the baby over one absurd dream just doesn't hold up!" Brooklyn cried and begged me too. "Mom! The baby really is Justin's! If you don't believe it, take him for a paternity test!" "I know you don't like me. I can divorce Justin! I only beg you to spare the baby!" But I only repeated the same thing to them. "An ancestor's dream in a dream is never wrong. An outside bloodline has entered the family. The child cannot be of the Whitney line!" "Son, don't take it so hard. Once I've dealt with this bastard, it will all be over!" Holding the sleeping infant in my arms, I moved step by step toward the edge of the rooftop. The wind whistled past my ears. The online comments blew up. What is this old woman trying to do? She isn't actually planning to kill the baby, is she? Don't! We can testify, the baby really is your son's! If you don't believe it, go pull the hospital records, or just get a paternity test done! Can't the people above see it yet? This isn't her suspecting her daughter-in-law of cheating. She clearly resents that the grandson's birth stole away the attention she had at home. Even with a paternity test, she'd kill him anyway! I stared coldly at the comments in front of me. They don't know a damn thing! The Whitney family had one son for three generations running. To hold a grandson as soon as possible, I burned incense and prayed to the Buddha every single day. After Brooklyn got pregnant, I cooked her something different and delicious every day, terrified my precious grandson would go hungry. Before the child was even born, the gifts I'd prepared for him filled the entire nursery. I looked forward to this child's arrival more than anyone. That is exactly why I cannot accept that someone swapped a bastard for my grandson! He deserves to die!

Chapter 4

I lifted the baby high above my head, ready to let go. The next second, the rooftop door was kicked open from the outside! Right after that, a group of police officers swarmed in and pinned me to the ground. The baby was handed back to Brooklyn by the police. Holding the child she had lost and gotten back again, she burst into tears on the spot. But I cursed at the officer holding me down. "Are you people insane?! I haven't committed any crime, so why are you arresting me?" The officers were angrier than I was. "Killing someone in broad daylight, and your own grandson at that, and you still say you're innocent?" "If we hadn't gotten here in time, you'd have thrown this baby off the roof!" But I still stuck out my neck stubbornly. "He's not my grandson! He's a bastard!" "Instead of looking for my grandson, the one who got switched, you're helping the villains who swapped him bully a poor old woman." "Do you people have any conscience at all?" My shouting was giving the officers a splitting headache. My son stepped forward too and threw the rush-ordered paternity test in my face. Pointing at the big words on it, "99.999% genetic similarity, parent-child relationship confirmed," he stressed to me. "Mom, look carefully. I paid to have the paternity test rushed, and this baby is mine!" "You wronged Brooklyn and nearly killed your own grandson! I'm sending you to jail!" But Brooklyn took his hand and said with a gentle, considerate look. "Let it go, honey. Mom didn't mean to. She just doesn't like me." "Besides, nothing happened to the baby. As long as she promises never to hurt him again, that's enough." Even the relatives kept praising me for being lucky enough to find such a wonderful daughter-in-law. "Wanda, just listen to Brooklyn. Apologize to her sincerely and write out a promise, and from now on you're all still one family." "Exactly! Where would you ever find a daughter-in-law this good? You nearly killed her baby, and she's still going out of her way to speak up for you." "Don't throw kindness back in people's faces, or I swear I'll have you put away! Make you spend the rest of your life behind bars!" "Fantasizing that her own daughter-in-law cheated. I think after all those years as a widow, she's the one who couldn't stand being lonely." "That's why she measures everyone by herself and figures Brooklyn is the same kind of woman!" They cursed me until I was in the dirt, and the online comments were telling me to admit fault and apologize too. Enough already. First time I've ever seen someone in a jealous catfight with her own daughter-in-law. It's not just the daughter-in-law. She wouldn't even spare her own newborn grandson. Hurry up and apologize, and give your grandson all the gifts and the RV and everything you prepared, or this family really is going to fall apart! Her daughter-in-law even spoke up for her. I'm crying. Where would you ever find a daughter-in-law this good? Only I kept my eyes locked hard on Brooklyn in front of me and said, word by word. "You can fool everyone else, but you can't fool me!" "There's no way this child could be my grandson!" As I spoke, ignoring Brooklyn's attempts to stop me, in front of everyone I suddenly threw back the swaddling cloth covering the baby's face. The next second, everyone there covered their mouths in shock!
