Synopsis
We were out at sea on a chartered boat. My wife insisted on diving in a dangerous reef area.
I begged her not to, warning her that these waters were infested with lethal sea snakes.
Her childhood best friend, standing beside her, sneered with dripping sarcasm:
"If you really loved her, Ian, you’d risk your life for her!"
Before diving in, my wife posted a cozy photo of the two of them on her Ins story with the caption:
[Nothing hits harder than a childhood best friend who’ll follow you to the ends of the earth.]
Shortly after, she surfaced, frantically dragging her bitten best friend back onto the deck. She lowered her head, desperate to suck the venom out of his wound, but I stopped her immediately.
Despite the emergency CPR and first-aid measures I applied, the poison killed him.
Seven days later, my wife drugged my drink and threw me alive into a snake-infested reef. Her eyes burned with pure malice:
"It's your fault! If you hadn’t stopped me from sucking out the poison, he wouldn't have died!
Did you know I was pregnant with his baby? You killed my child, and you killed his father!"
When I opened my eyes again, the phantom agony of sea snake venom still tore through my body. The memory of my wife's twisted, demonic expression before I drowned felt straight out of a horror film.
I had no idea I had been cheated on all along. They had been sleeping together behind my back for who knows how long—she was even carrying his child.
"Are you coming with me or not?" Julia’s impatient voice rang in my ears.
She stood there with her hands on her hips, looking as arrogant as ever. At this moment, she had no clue she was pregnant yet, which was why she was screaming to go diving.
In my past life, after her best friend Lucas died, she vanished for a whole day. Looking back, she must have slipped away to have an abortion.
Seeing that throwing a tantrum didn't work, Julia softened her tone and grabbed my arm, pouting cutely.
"Baby, please, just dive with me this once! The ocean out here is just too gorgeous."
"No. Highly venomous sea snakes frequent this area." I pulled my arm away, completely sickened by her touch.
Still, to avoid blowing my cover, I kept my voice steady and gave her the exact same warning I did in my past life.
My friend Mark chimed in from behind: "Ian's right, Julia. It's way too risky. There's no antivenom on this boat. If you get bitten, you're dead."
"Don't be so dramatic! What are the odds? Besides, real ocean exploring takes a little risk!" Julia scoffed, insisting she loved the sea and that snakes rarely attacked unprovoked.
Her tone turned sour, whining about how rare it was to go on vacation and how I always managed to be a buzzkill.
Right on cue, Lucas walked in and cooed at her, "What's wrong? Who upset my gorgeous Julia?"
Julia pouted in silence. Lucas let out a soft chuckle. "I thought it was something serious. Come on, I'll go with you."
He affectionately pinched her nose, and Julia threw herself into his arms without a second thought.
In my past life, I always felt they were uncomfortably close. We had fought over Lucas dozens of times.
Every single time, she flipped the script on me.
"We grew up together! He’s practically family to me, Ian! If there was anything going on between us, would I have ever ended up with you?"
"Dirty minds see dirt in everything. You're so pathetic!"
Julia was stunning, and her line of suitors stretched around the block. I simped after her for an entire year before she finally agreed to be with me, and we got married right after college.
Yet, Lucas was always there. He even crashed our honeymoon, booking our hotels himself. Looking back, they were probably already sleeping together back then.
"Words are cheap. What's the point of saying you love her if you won't even risk your neck for her?"
Lucas tossed the insult at me with a smirk. I said nothing. Before heading into the water, they posed for a set of intimate selfies, their faces inches apart.
Julia uploaded it with the caption:
[Nothing hits harder than a childhood best friend who’ll follow you to the ends of the earth.]
My hands shook as I gripped my phone. I never realized that the woman sleeping beside me was deadlier than any viper. The phantom burns of thousands of fangs tearing into my flesh hadn't faded.
Mark noticed my pale face. "Hey man, you okay? You look terrible."
"Just feel a bit feverish."
I used the sickness as an excuse to lie down in the cabin. In this life, I wouldn't lift a single finger to stop Julia from sucking that venom.
Let them both drop dead together.I scrolled through every single post on Julia's social media. She posted Lucas far more often than she ever posted her own husband.
In the past, I forced myself to look the other way. But now, all I could think about was the night Lucas died. Julia had stood over my bed, dressed in black, staring down at me in the dark all night long.
She had asked, "Ian, are you asleep?"
Exhausted, I had mumbled back half-asleep, "It's late, babe. Go to bed."
I hadn't seen the murderous glint in her eyes back then.
Until she tossed me into the snake-infested pit of water, coldly hissing at me: How could I sleep so peacefully when Lucas was dead? Didn't I feel a shred of guilt?
The morning after his death, she vanished for a day and a night, scaring me so badly I almost called the police.
She had gone to the clinic for an abortion. And at Lucas's funeral, she had walked right at the front, holding his portrait—a role reserved strictly for a wife or child.
I had tolerated her out of trust, never realizing she was burying him as his widow.
Seven days after his death, she told me she wanted to go back to the beach to say her final goodbyes to Lucas.
Afraid she’d break down, and knowing a storm was coming, I tried to keep her home.
Instead, she drugged my drink, hired two thugs to tie me up, and dragged me out to the coast.
Every scene from my past life flashed before my eyes: their shameless flirtations, Lucas questioning my love for Julia, and the feral hatred in Julia's eyes before she killed me.
It made me want to vomit.
"Quick! Come out here! Ian, something happened to your wife!"
Mark screamed from the deck. I forced myself to run outside, making sure my reaction looked natural.
Out on the deck, Julia was cradling Lucas, whose skin had already turned an ashen blue. The venom had spread fast.
"Don't put your mouth on it! If you have any cuts in your mouth, sea snake venom will—" I stepped forward, shouting the required warning.
In my past life, I tackled Julia, pinning her down so she couldn't touch him. When she fought like a rabid animal, I had to knock her out.
We performed emergency CPR, but it was useless. Lucas died right there on the deck.
I still remembered the venomous glare she shot me as she held his corpse inside the cabin all night.
"Yeah, Julia, Ian's right! Just do CPR!" Mark urged.
Julia’s mind was made up. She looked at me, tears streaming down her face. "Ian, Lucas is my best friend. I can't just let him die!"
With that, she planted her lips directly against the bite, sucking aggressively.
Willing to die for her true love.
Julia, Lucas—if you loved each other this much, why didn’t you just get married? Did betraying me make it more exciting?
I kept shouting warnings at her, sounding frantic and distressed. Mark shook his head, sighing and patting my shoulder in sympathy.
Within seconds, Julia collapsed right beside Lucas. Before passing out, she locked her fingers tightly with his. A picture-perfect tragic romance.
I dropped to my knees, clutching my shirt, and put on the performance of a lifetime. "Babe! Wake up, please don't scare me! I know he's your friend, but how could you throw away your life for him?!"
The boat sped back to shore, docking around the exact same time as in my previous life.
I loathed both of them with every fiber of my being. How I wished they had both dropped dead on the spot. If she loved him so much, she should have joined him in the grave.
When we were escorted off the boat, the Coast Guard arrived, questioning why we were diving in such a hazardous zone.
I broke down in tears, looking completely shattered.
An officer frowned at me. "She’s your wife. Why didn't you stop her? Sea snake bites are fatal out here."
My friends stepped forward to vouch for me, explaining that we had a huge argument trying to talk her out of it. After filing the report, they rushed us to the hospital.
To my surprise, Julia was stubbornly resilient. Lucas was pronounced dead on arrival, but Julia survived.
Although she suffered multiple organ strain, her venom intake had been minimal. She regained consciousness that very night.I sat by her bedside. Julia was on the brink of hysteria, grabbing my hands with desperate force.
"Ian... Lucas... how is he?"
I lowered my head and shook it. "He didn't make it."
"No—NO! How could this happen?!" Julia shrieked, breaking into hysterical sobs. I gently patted her back, playing the devoted husband.
She wept until she could barely breathe. Then, I leaned in and whispered softly:
"You... were pregnant. But because of the venom, the baby didn't survive."
I watched the emotions on her face shift into something utterly twisted and complex.
Before stepping into the room, I had already sent the fetal tissue sample for a paternity test alongside my DNA. Since God refused to take Julia’s life, fine. She could live—and suffer every second of it!
I would gather all the evidence I needed. I would grant her and Lucas their happily-ever-after in hell, and make sure the rest of her life was pure misery.
"I'm sorry..."
Julia clutched her head, wailing in agony. But I knew that "I'm sorry" wasn't meant for me. It was for Lucas.
Sorry for failing to protect his only child, his flesh and blood.
Sorry for dragging him into the water.
"It's all my fault... I shouldn't have been so reckless..."
Julia only ever showed remorse when it involved Lucas. If it were me, she would never admit a single mistake; she would just take her rage out on me twice as hard.
I tended to her with relentless devotion, leaving zero room for suspicion.
At Lucas’s memorial service, I even acted magnanimous, letting Julia lead the procession holding his framed portrait, walking ahead of everyone like his grieving widow.
Julia glanced back at me, looking slightly guilty. "Ian, please don't get the wrong idea. I'm... practically his family."
"I understand. It's the right thing to do," I said calmly. Julia was taken aback, clearly having prepared an entire speech to convince me.
That night, she wrapped her arms around me and whispered, "Ian, you've become so patient and kind...
"Why weren't you like this before? Ian, let's stop fighting, okay? Let's just live a good life together."
I pretended to be asleep, ignoring her words completely.
Did she think she was rewarding me? Now that Lucas was dead, she wanted me as her backup plan?
Pathetic.
...
A week after Lucas’s death, on the day of his one-week memorial, I waited at home with the paternity test results and the signed divorce papers. But she didn't come back.
I called her phone repeatedly. No answer.
Then, I accidentally opened TikTok, only to find Julia live streaming directly from that exact stretch of the coastline.
My gut told me something was terribly wrong. On the screen, Julia glared straight into the lens, looking eerie and cold.
"Guys, I found something terrifying today. My husband has a stack of life insurance policies on me in his drawer. And every single one names him as the sole beneficiary."
"Just a few days ago, we were attacked by sea snakes in these exact waters. Sea snakes don't attack people unprovoked."
Julia claimed that if Lucas hadn't fought off the snake for her, she would already be dead.
Her voice cracked with faux tears as she expertly steered the narrative.
The live chat exploded instantly.
[Wait, is this a real-life murder-for-insurance scheme?! That is sick!]
My chest tightened. How did she find out about the policies?
