Chapter 1

On the third day of our Labor Day RV trip, Dad got out to fill up on water, while Mom and I went to the market for groceries. In my past life, a burly man in a mask pried open the RV door and trapped my sleeping sister inside. Terrified, she video-called me, crying and begging me to save her. "Sis, help me! There's someone in the car!" I ran back like a madwoman, and I ran right into the man as he was climbing out of the car. Furious, I lunged at him and bit him, but he shoved me down the steep slope of the campground and broke my spine. He gave a taunting laugh and whistled at me. "Little girl, you want revenge? You really don't know your limits." "By the way, your sister smells really good..." The campground claimed there was no surveillance footage and the culprit couldn't be found, so they just paid fifty thousand in compensation and called it done. But after my sister went home, she lost her mind, and six months later she jumped from a high-rise. I ended up paralyzed in bed, spending the rest of my life full of regret, wondering why I couldn't have run just a little faster that day. When I opened my eyes again, Dad was holding the water bucket, smiling as he got ready to step out and fill it. "You two go get the groceries, I'll be right back." Every hair on my body stood on end. I snatched the car keys and locked the doors. "Nobody leaves! Dad, get the safety hammer from under the seat!" ... Dad's face changed in an instant. Without a moment's hesitation, he pulled the safety hammer out from under the seat. "What's happening?" Mom's heart leaped into her throat too. "What's wrong, Angelica? Is there someone dangerous?" I nodded hard. Scenes from my past life flashed before my eyes, and my throat tightened. "I—I just saw it by chance." "There was a man near our RV. He circled it several times, and he kept peering inside..." Dad's eyes narrowed, and he pressed me at once, his voice serious. "Did you get a clear look at him? What did he look like?" I dug my nails into my palms. A flicker of helplessness crossed my eyes. "He was wearing a baseball cap and a mask, so I couldn't see his face at all." "But he was very tall, his arms all muscle. He looked terrifying..." My voice trembled softly. Even having lived through it all once more. Even now, when I thought of that man, my whole body went cold. Mom looked out the window. It was Labor Day, and this RV campground was ridiculously lively. The RVs were lined up in neat rows. At a glance, there were at least fifty or sixty of them. Tourists were laughing and horsing around everywhere. It didn't look at all like a dangerous place where someone evil could be hiding. "That can't be, Angelica?" Mom frowned slightly. "It's broad daylight, and there are so many people in the campground." "Who would dare commit a crime so openly? It's not possible." Dad relaxed a little too. "Right, Angelica, maybe you saw wrong?" "Or maybe it was just a tourist passing by, curious and taking a look at the RV?" "Broad daylight, this many people around—no one would dare do anything." No one would dare. Yes, that's what everyone thought. But in my past life, it was in a campground exactly this noisy. Right under countless people's noses, that burly man pried open the door of our RV. The first thing he did was pull the blackout curtains shut. He trapped my sleeping sister inside the RV. People came and went outside the windows. Countless people saw our RV rocking. But not a single one of them thought twice. Instead, they watched for the fun of it, giggling and joking. They assumed it was a young couple hiding in the car, being intimate. A few passersby even filmed videos and posted them to the local camping group online. That video actually went a little viral at the time. Countless commenters piled on with jokes and jeers. But what they didn't know was— that inside, a human tragedy was playing out. I bit down hard on my lip, forcing back the red welling in my eyes. I didn't blame my parents for not believing me. If I were still my past self, I never would have believed it either. I didn't dare waste another second. I shook my sleeping sister awake. "Sis, wake up, stop sleeping!" My sister rubbed her bleary eyes. Her face was completely blank. "What's wrong? Are we leaving?" I nodded hard, my voice choking up. "Mom, Dad, let's hurry and go! Right now!" "We can't stay here. You have to believe me!" Dad's heart clenched, his voice full of concern. "Angelica, what on earth is wrong with you?" "What happened? Everything was fine, why do you suddenly want to leave?" The fear built up over two lifetimes broke like a dam in an instant. I couldn't hold it back any longer. I burst into tears. "Mom, Dad, I'm begging you, let's go right now!" "If we don't leave now, it'll be too late!"

Chapter 2

My parents had never seen me break down like this. They exchanged a glance. And though they were full of questions, they didn't press me any further. "Okay, we'll go right now." Dad didn't dare waste a second. He quickly shifted into gear, ready to pull out. Seeing me cry so hard, my sister immediately wrapped me in a gentle hug. Her voice was impossibly soft. "Angelica, what on earth happened?" "Don't be scared. Tell me." For as long as I could remember, no matter what upset me, Agatha was always the first to comfort me. I buried my face in her arms, wiping my tears only to have them keep coming. "Agatha, I had a nightmare. I dreamed that someone wanted to hurt you." "I ran back to save you with everything I had, but a thug broke my spine, and I could never stand again for the rest of my life." "Mom and Dad nearly went mad too. We were clearly the victims, but there was nowhere for us to turn for help…" I choked up and couldn't go on. I didn't dare repeat how it ended for Agatha. She stroked the top of my head and soothed me softly. "Silly Angelica, it's only a dream." "Dreams mean the opposite of what happens, so don't be afraid." Hearing this, Mom frowned in displeasure. "What kind of nonsense are you spouting, young lady?" "We finally got our whole family out on a trip, the weather's so nice, the scenery's so beautiful." "And you just say you want to quit? What a shame…" "This isn't a dream!" I jerked my head up and grabbed her arm desperately. "It's real! It's really going to happen!" "Mom, will you please believe me? I'm begging you, believe me just this once!" My terror was far too real. It didn't feel anything like a simple dream. Without the slightest hesitation, Agatha spoke, her tone firm. "I believe Angelica." "If she doesn't want to keep going, then we won't. Safety comes first." Dad, still driving, was silent for a few seconds, then gave in and nodded too. "Since Angelica doesn't want to keep going, then we won't." My taut nerves finally began to ease. As long as we could get out of here, as long as I could protect Agatha, there was still time. But the moment we reached the campground gate, two staff members stepped up and stopped us. "Sir, I'm terribly sorry." "There's been a landslide on the mountain road nearby, and all the mountain roads are closed now." I panicked at once and leaned out to press them. "A landslide on the mountain road?" "Every road is blocked? Not a single one open?" The staffer explained patiently. "That's right, they're all completely sealed off." "But the authorities have already started emergency repairs." "We got a notice from up top—to prevent a second landslide, no one is allowed to leave." A chill wrapped around me in an instant. There was no escape. We really couldn't get away. Mom let out a long sigh of relief and couldn't help teasing me with a laugh. "See, young lady? You worked yourself up for nothing." "Since even heaven doesn't want us to leave, let's stay and enjoy a couple more days." Dad frowned, his eyes full of resignation. "Nothing we can do—the road's blocked, we can't get through." "We'll just have to head back and wait." The car turned around right there. And drove back into the campground. I clutched the hem of my shirt and immediately told Dad what to do. "Dad, don't park where we were before." "Move somewhere else—park on the open lot where there are the most people, the busiest spot!" Though puzzled, Dad still did as I asked. He parked the RV in the most crowded area. Tents stood clustered all around, and tourists streamed by without end. I gripped the safety hammer in my hand. My eyes swept warily over every figure outside the window. Seeing me on edge as if bracing for battle, Mom reached over and patted my shoulder. "Angelica, relax. Let's go take a look around the market." "Matthew, you go fetch some water." "People don't know about the road closure yet. Once word gets out, they're bound to fight over supplies." Dad nodded, thoroughly convinced. "You've got a point. Supplies are scarce in the mountains, and the worst thing when roads are blocked is running out of food." "Then let's split up—quick there and quick back." I lunged forward and blocked their way. "No! You can't go out there!" "No one gets off this RV!" Mom frowned instantly, an edge of impatience in her voice. "Angelica! Enough of this!" "Even if you're not hungry, the rest of us still have to eat. We can't just keep starving." Agatha gently pulled me close and comforted me softly. "Angelica, don't be afraid." "We'll all go together. With this many people around, it'll be fine." I looked out the window at the crowd. And could only bite my lip and nod. With everyone packed together like this, in broad daylight, nothing would happen for now.

Chapter 3

Dad picked up the water bucket and reminded us to be careful. Then he turned and headed for the water station. The three of us walked side by side, moving quickly toward the campground market. The whole time, I was on edge. My eyes kept scanning our surroundings, and I had no heart to pick out food. Mom and my sister could see how anxious I was, and they didn't dare drag their feet. We paid quickly and got ready to head back to the RV. But we'd only taken two steps when my gaze froze, and every hair on my body stood on end. A strange man was lingering around our RV. He stood by the car window, head slightly bowed. He kept peering into the car. My mind went hot, and every ounce of reason left me. I dropped my shopping bags and rushed over. "Who are you?" "What are you doing next to our car?!" The man turned around, a faint smile on his face. "Hi there, little girl..." The shadow of my past life swept over me in an instant. My eyes went bloodshot. I didn't even take the time to figure it out. I slammed a fist into him, hard! "Angelica!" Mom and my sister went pale with fright. They rushed up at once and put themselves in front of me. "Who are you? What are you planning to do next to our car?" Dad, who had just finished getting water, walked right into the scene. He dropped the bucket in his hand and rushed over with big strides. "What do you think you're doing? Picking on my daughter?" The standoff was instant. "Don't hit me! Don't hit me!" The man covered his face and hurriedly backed away. "I just came to borrow a pair of pliers! Nothing more!" Dad stopped short, eyeing him warily. "Pliers? What do you need pliers for?" The man was sweating all over with anxiety. "My daughter was fooling around and got her hand stuck in a railing, and she can't get it out!" "I saw you had an RV, so I figured you might keep some repair tools on hand, and I thought I'd come and ask!" "Who knew your daughter would just walk up and punch me..." Dad was half-convinced. He looked in the direction the man was pointing. Sure enough, a crowd was gathered around a railing not far off. And every so often, the heart-wrenching sobs of a little girl carried over. The tense atmosphere dissolved almost all at once. Dad looked apologetic and quickly spoke up. "Sorry about that, buddy, we misunderstood you." "I've got pliers—I'll grab them for you right now." I stared blankly at the man in front of me. My heart was pounding without stop. He really was short. And a little chubby, too. Completely different from that burly attacker—like two different people. Guilt welled up in me all at once. My ears turned red, and I apologized quietly. "I'm sorry, sir, I was just too nervous." "I shouldn't have hit you." The man waved a hand and gave a helpless, bitter smile. "It's fine, it's fine. It's a good thing for a young lady to be on guard." "Just don't be so impulsive next time." Dad dug out a pair of pliers. He hurried out of the RV and put them in the man's hand. Not far off, the little girl's crying went on. It set your nerves on edge to hear it. Dad looked pained, and he offered on his own. "I'm a retired firefighter, so I've got a bit more experience." "Why don't I come along and take a look with you?" The man's eyes lit up, and he thanked him at once. "That would be great!" "Sorry to trouble you, and thank you so much!" Alarm bells were blaring in my head. My instinct was to stop them. But before I could get a word out, Mom shot me a fierce look. She lowered her voice, her tone full of anger. "Angelica Summers, what on earth are you trying to do today?" "You just walked up and hurt the man without stopping to ask a single question." "He's being gracious about it and not holding it against you. Your dad is making up for your mistake!" My eyes went red with frustration. "But..." "No buts!" Mom cut me off sharply. "With this many people around, what could possibly happen?" "Stop stirring up trouble over nothing!" My sister gently pulled me back too, whispering to soothe me. "Angelica, be good, don't be nervous." "Dad's right nearby, just a few steps away." My palms were slick with cold sweat, and my nails were nearly digging into my flesh. I knew Mom didn't understand. Nobody understood. They lived in the safety of the present and couldn't see the tragedy I'd been through. They thought crowds meant safety. That daylight meant no evil. But in my past life, the demon had used exactly that kind of bustle as cover. I didn't dare let myself get distracted again. I kept my eyes locked on the figures moving all around. Just then, Dad's voice came from a distance. "Honey, bring me a wrench..." "This spot isn't lining up right..."

Chapter 4

Mom answered right away, digging a wrench out of the toolbox. She turned to hurry over toward Dad. My eyes instantly welled up, and I clutched at the hem of her clothes. "Mom, I'm begging you, don't go! Don't leave here!" With me holding on so tightly, her face went red with anger. "Angelica! Have you lost your mind?" "There's a child trapped over there, it's a matter of life and death. How dare you stop me?" I was so frantic my voice went hoarse, and the tears wouldn't stop. "Mom, it's a matter of life and death here too!" She just took it for nonsense, frowning as she snapped at me: "What are you rambling about?" "Our family's perfectly fine, what could possibly happen to us?" In the distance, Dad's urging voice came again. "Hurry up, honey! The kid's crying so hard he's about to pass out!" Mom didn't hesitate anymore. She threw off my hand. "Angelica, listen to me and stop making trouble!" The moment she said it, she grabbed the wrench and squeezed quickly into the crowd. But I didn't dare relax for even a second, and immediately took my sister's hand. Every nerve in my body was strung tight. Agatha noticed my panic and gently soothed me. "Don't be scared. As soon as the road's fixed, we'll head straight home." My teeth were chattering as I told her over and over. "Sis, don't leave my side even half a step, do you hear me?" Agatha smiled helplessly. "Okay, I'll do whatever you say." All around us was laughter and sunshine. Just then, a low male voice cut in out of nowhere. "Hey, little girl, do you have anything to eat?" The instant I heard that voice, a cold sweat broke out across my back. The blood in my body seemed to freeze. It was that voice! I'd heard it thousands of times in my dreams. There was no way I could be wrong. Stiffly, I turned around. Before me stood a tall, hulking man. He wore a black mask, and the brim of his cap was pulled down low. Only a pair of sinister eyes showed. It was him! The monster who destroyed our whole family in my past life! He lowered his eyes slightly and spoke, faking weakness. "I think my blood sugar's crashing. I'm really dizzy." "Could you give me a little something to eat?" Agatha was soft-hearted, without the slightest guard. "Yes, yes, hold on a second, I'll get you something..." The next second, I didn't hesitate for another instant. I yanked my sister hard and shoved her up into the car with everything I had. Fast as a thunderclap. I locked the front and rear doors from the inside. The whole sequence flowed in one motion. My sister stared at me, completely lost. "Angelica, what's wrong with you?" My teeth were chattering, and tears smeared across my whole face. "Sis, it's him!" "He's the bad guy who's going to hurt you!" I didn't dare stop. I fumbled my phone out in a panic. Dialing Mom's number again and again like crazy. "Pick up, Mom, pick up the phone!" We couldn't stay here. Not for one second! But all that came from the receiver was that beeping tone. Over and over. No one picked up. I looked up in despair, my eyes hitting the car window. The man's sinister eyes were locked on us. Like a beast fixed on its prey. The next second, he rushed to the front of the car. He pulled a key from his pocket and gave the lock a light twist. Click. The door opened. He quickly locked the doors and pulled down the sunshade. The light was instantly shut out. I gripped the safety hammer in my hand and forced myself to speak. "You—you stay back! Come any closer and I'll smash you!" The man let out a scornful laugh, his tone full of impatience. "Meddling little brat, you've wasted so much of my time." Then he closed in on us, step by step. The pressure of it made it hard to breathe. I clenched my teeth, raised the safety hammer, and swung it hard at his head! But an adult's reflexes were nothing a teenage girl like me could match. His eyes went contemptuous, and he twisted aside in a flash. The safety hammer struck nothing but air. Before I could pull my hand back, a slap landed hard across my face. I was knocked straight to the ground. My cheek burned. But he had no intention of stopping. Several more slaps followed. Each one heavier than the last. I was hit until I saw stars. Blood filled my mouth. I lay limp on the ground, without even the strength to lift a hand. "Angelica!" Agatha's eyes went red with panic in an instant. She threw herself toward me recklessly, screaming: "Let go of my sister! Don't hit her!" But against the hulking attacker, she was no match at all. The man reached out and clamped her tight. He leaned close to her neck and greedily breathed in. "You smell so good... All that time following you was worth it." Then the man roughly tore at her clothes. "No! Let me go! Help!" Agatha struggled desperately. Tears soaked her whole face. My ears were ringing. I watched helplessly as the nightmare played out all over again. Even coming back for a second chance, was I still going to fail?
