Synopsis
Four years into our marriage, my husband’s mistress deliberately pushed me off the balcony.
I begged her to save my baby.
Instead, she buried her face in my husband’s chest, sobbing like a terrified victim.
And my husband held her, whispering gentle words of comfort.
Neither of them spared a glance for me, lying in a pool of my own blood on the cold ground, slipping in and out of consciousness.
That day, I lost my child. And I lost the man who, it turned out, had never loved me at all.
Years later, I held another man’s arm, smiling radiant as I announced my remarriage to the world.
My ex-husband stood in the shadows, tears streaming down his face:
"Elena... I hope you find happiness."
The sharp, sterile smell of hospital disinfectant stung my nostrils.
I instinctively reached down to touch my stomach. It was flat now, stripped of the gentle curve it once had.
Tears, hot and laced with bloodshot exhaustion, rolled down my cheeks. A bitter smile tugged at the corners of my mouth as despair suffocated every inch of the room.
Julian Vance walked in just as I was falling apart.
Whatever words of comfort he had prepared caught in his throat. In the end, all he could offer was a dry, hollow sentence:
"Take care of yourself. We can always have another baby."
I shut my eyes, refusing to look at him. I was terrified that if I did, I would lunge forward and tear him apart.
The air froze between us for an eternity before Julian spoke again, his voice low:
"Hailey went too far. I will speak to her."
See? He always knew how to twist the knife with the most casual words.
My best friend, Mia, had made a scene while I was unconscious. When she learned the baby couldn't be saved due to prolonged oxygen deprivation, she flew into a rage, clawed Hailey’s face, and swore to end her acting career.
Even under those circumstances, Julian had stepped in to shield Hailey with everything he had.
The memory snapped something inside me. Ignoring the throbbing agony in my abdomen, I threw off the blanket, lunged forward, and slapped him across the face.
"Get out! Get the hell out of here! I never want to see you again!"
"Julian, who the hell do you think you are? You cheated on me during my pregnancy, and I swallowed it. But Hailey—she knew I was almost due! She knew the balcony railing was right behind me! And she still pushed me!"
"When she threw herself into your arms crying for comfort, did you feel like a hero? Did you feel grand and noble, playing protector to such a delicate little thing?"
"I was covered in blood, bleeding out on the garden lawn, screaming for help! And I saw the two of you playing lovers clear as day!"
"That was your child, Julian! You killed our baby!"
"And I killed him too... for staying with you..."
My voice broke into violent, shuddering sobs. My hands flailed against him, striking his chest over and over—the only way I could bleed out the poison festering in my heart.
Julian didn't say a word. He stood there, silently taking every blow.
It was my mother-in-law, Eleanor, who rushed in with the doctors to hold me back.
Julian’s usual cold, immaculate composure was gone. His cheek was swollen red, marked with stinging scratches that oozed thin lines of blood.
Eleanor let out a shaky sigh. Her eyes were red, brimming with tears as she took my trembling hands.
"Elena, sweetheart, you can't put yourself through this right now. Please, calm down. We will make this right. I promise you."
I closed my eyes, turned away, and pulled the covers over my head. I couldn't bear to face reality. But the tears wouldn't stop soaking into the pillow.
I was so exhausted.
How did we become this, Julian?I was an orphan taken in by the Vance family when I was just a child. Bound by a long-standing family promise made decades ago, I eventually walked down the aisle with Julian.
I still remembered our wedding day. Mia had hugged me and teased:
"Ten years of chasing him, and you finally got your happily ever after."
Back then, I had beamed, utterly convinced:
"We will. Julian and I are going to be happy forever."
Julian was naturally reserved, and I was quiet and compliant. Together, we were like two locked boxes, rarely speaking words of passion or sweet romance.
Yet during our intimate moments, Julian would cradle my face in his hands, teasing me until I whispered that I loved him right against his ear.
For three years, while our marriage lacked fireworks, it was peaceful and respectful.
Then, in our fourth year, I became pregnant.
Every piece of the life I had dreamed of seemed to finally be falling into place.
On the night of our fourth anniversary, I carefully packaged the positive pregnancy test and the ultrasound scan into an elegant gift box.
I imagined how his quiet face would light up with shock and delight.
Then my phone buzzed with an unknown message on SnapChat:
Is this Mrs. Vance? Mr. Vance injured his arm and is currently in the ER at St. Jude's Hospital. Please come immediately.
Panic seized me. I called a driver and rushed to St. Jude’s.
I ran down the corridor and reached the room, only to freeze at the doorway. My husband had his arm wrapped around a girl whose eyes were puffy from crying, softly reassuring her.
When Julian noticed me standing there, he gently pushed the girl away. His tone instantly turned sharp and impatient:
"What are you doing here?"
In that split second, the ground beneath my marriage cracked wide open.
The girl sniffled, her voice thick with exaggerated innocence:
"I’m the one who called Mrs. Vance. After all, you got hurt protecting me. I didn't want your wife to misunderstand."
My mouth parted, but no sound came out. I stood there, stiff and humiliated.
Seeing my silence, the girl stepped forward and grabbed my hand with practiced warmth.
"Hello, Mrs. Vance. I'm Hailey Bennett. An obsessed anti-fan stalked me tonight. If Mr. Vance hadn't stepped in, I don't know what would have happened."
She looked at me with stars in her eyes, gushing about how Julian had swooped in like a hero.
A woman’s intuition never lies: Hailey Bennett wanted my husband.
Dread pooled in my stomach. I pulled my hand back, ignoring her chatter, and walked up to Julian.
"Next time, don't be so reckless," I said quietly, trying to regain control. "She's a public figure. She has bodyguards for a reason."
Hailey’s face fell instantly, her voice dripping with pitiful guilt.
"I’m so sorry, Mrs. Vance. My security team had already clocked out for the night. It’s entirely my fault Julian got hurt..."
Julian was propped up on the bed, testing the mobility of his injured shoulder. Hearing the tension between us, he frowned slightly.
"Elena, I just happened to pass by and helped. There’s no need to be so hostile. Hailey is the new ambassador for our firm. It’s my responsibility to guarantee her safety."
I hadn't expected him to scold me. I hadn't realized that, in his eyes, I was just a petty, jealous woman.
A sharp, dull ache spread through my chest.
I swallowed the bitterness, telling myself to wait until we got home to talk this through.
But when I opened the rear door of the car outside, I froze.Hailey was already sitting right beside my husband, chatting animatedly. On the face of the man who rarely ever smiled, there was an unfamiliar softness.
When she saw me, Hailey didn't make the slightest move to budge.
"Mrs. Vance, Julian noticed how late it was and offered to give me a lift. You don't mind, do you?"
She smiled, flashing two delicate dimples.
It was an open provocation.
No matter how mild-tempered I was, I couldn't stomach this deliberate intrusion.
"Actually, I do," I said evenly. "Would you mind moving to the passenger seat, Miss Bennett? I'm pregnant. I’d prefer to sit in the back with the father of my child."
As I spoke, I looked directly at Julian, waiting for him to react—praying for some sign of warmth or surprise.
He didn't flinch. His expression remained a mask of ice.
My heart sank straight into an abyss.
"Hailey, take the front seat," Julian muttered after a few agonizing seconds of silence, his voice low and hoarse.
Knowing when to fold, Hailey slipped into the passenger seat without another word.
I closed my eyes, fighting back the wave of sorrow. The pure joy I had felt upon learning I was pregnant was completely gone, crushed beneath the weight of his indifference.
Julian didn't speak a single word to me during the entire drive home.
Once inside, he took off his jacket and went straight to the shower, just like any other day.
The sound of running water echoed from the bathroom.
In my fragile, early stage of pregnancy, every second felt like torture.
The water shut off. Julian emerged with a towel slung loosely around his waist. Seeing me sitting on the edge of the bed, he walked over and pulled me into his arms, his tone cautious and placating.
"I truly only stepped in tonight because I happened to be there. Hailey and I will be working together closely on business matters moving forward. Don't overthink this."
His hand gently settled over my stomach, which didn't show yet.
"This is the most precious gift I've ever received," he whispered. "How far along? Is our little one giving you a hard time?"
His sudden tenderness caught me off guard.
Seeing that he truly cared about the baby, I let my defenses crumble. I smiled faintly and placed my hand over his.
"Two months. A very good baby. No morning sickness at all."
Back then, I was naive enough to believe he still loved me. Looking back now, that sudden show of affection was nothing more than guilt clawing at his conscience.Over the weeks that followed, Julian’s schedule was indeed packed with business events alongside Hailey. Yet neither of them made any overtly improper public moves.
Still, a quiet unease lingered in my gut.
I tried to convince myself that since Julian had been honest with me, I owed him my trust as his wife.
One afternoon, I sat in the living room with Eleanor, watching television. The channel happened to cut to a live celebrity talk show featuring Hailey.
On screen, she was radiant, bubbly, and charismatic—undeniably captivating.
"Now, Hailey," the host teased, "we hear you’ve brought a very special guest with you today. Care to drop a few hints for the audience?"
"Haha, you'll never guess! It's tricky," Hailey replied, winking playfully at the camera before tilting her head in faux contemplation. "He’s exactly my type. A brilliant rising star in the corporate world... and, well, technically my boss."
Her bold flirtation drew gasps and cheers from the studio audience.
Seeing the hype hit its peak, the host announced with a flourish:
"Please give a warm welcome to Hailey’s special guest!"
Julian walked onto the stage in a tailored charcoal suit. Cold, aloof, and impossibly handsome, he carried an air of untouchable elegance.
Hailey immediately bounded over, wrapping her arm around his bicep as she interacted with the crowd.
The camera zoomed in on Julian. On screen, his lips curved into a helpless, fond smile, his eyes filled with an indulgent warmth as he looked down at her.
Crash—
That was the man who had told me he was out of town on a business trip.
That was a Julian I had never seen before. A man who had never looked at me like that in four years of marriage.
The porcelain bowl slipped from my fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor. Hot chicken soup splattered everywhere.
Yet no matter how hot the broth was, it couldn't thaw the bone-deep chill spreading through my veins.
Eleanor jumped up, carefully pulling me away from the broken shards.
"Elena, stay right here! I'm calling that foolish boy right now! That woman is venom. When he gets back, his father and I will tear him apart!"
I forced a smile, though my face felt entirely frozen.
"It's fine, Mom. He’s busy. Let’s not disturb him."
Eleanor refused to let it drop. She called Julian directly, demanding he leave the live broadcast and come home immediately.
An hour later, Julian walked into the living room. Seeing the three of us seated like an interrogation tribunal, he tossed his coat onto the sofa, looking exhausted.
"It was just PR. Can you all stop making a scene?"
His words were meant for his parents, but his eyes were fixed entirely on me.
I had been holding out hope for an explanation. Instead, he called my pain 'a scene.'
An invisible hand squeezed my lungs shut. I couldn't breathe. Tears spilled silently down my cheeks.
I had given him all the trust a wife could give. And he had forged that trust into a blade, driving it straight into my heart. From that day on, Julian seemed to stop caring altogether. He no longer hid his closeness with Hailey.
Scandalous rumors spread across the tabloids, but he never bothered to explain a single thing to me.
Our already sparse conversations dwindled into a cold, suffocating silence.
His repeated betrayals eroded the last shreds of hope I had for this marriage. The love I had carried for over a decade withered away with every boundary he crossed.
One morning, while scrolling through parenting forums on my phone, a breaking news alert popped up.
I tapped it.
There were photos of Julian and Hailey, captured at a high-profile gala, passionately embracing and kissing beneath the flashing cameras.
A public declaration of love.
Even though I thought my heart had gone completely numb, a vicious, stabbing pain tore through my chest.
I thought he would at least have the decency to hide it a little longer.
At least until our child was born.
When he stopped by the house to pick up some legal files later that afternoon, I couldn't stop myself. I blocked his path.
"Why go public now? Couldn't you have waited... just until..."
His eyes swept over my swollen, pregnant belly with an indifferent chill.
"There's no particular reason," he cut in flatly. "She wanted to go public, so I indulged her."
The words caught in my throat. I stood frozen, watching him turn and walk away without a backward glance.
Tears slipped down my face.
"Did you ever care about how I felt? Even for a second?"
A sudden kick inside my stomach jolted me back from the brink of despair.
I gently placed a trembling hand over my belly.
"It's okay, little one. It's just you and me now."
Yet even that final, fragile dream was ripped away from me.
