Chapter 1
The night breeze was extremely chilly on the windy mountain road.
Standing right in front of me was the head of the Scott family, Camden Scott. He was famous for being vicious and cruel. He leaned against a black Maybach, and the cigarette in his hand briefly glowed.
Luke Johnson and my parents had abandoned me at this very spot just a few minutes ago. They had simply shoved me in front of Camden before turning around and leaving without sparing me a single glance.
As they passed through the dim car lights, Nessa Reid poked her head out from Luke's embrace with an eerie yet smug smile.
I felt as though I was falling into an abyss. The blood in my veins froze.
She had done it all on purpose.
I stared intently as they left before Camden's cold voice startled me.
"Well? Do you already miss them?"
I turned around abruptly as Camden walked over to me and grabbed my chin fiercely with his gloved fingers. He forced me to look up at him.
"You're Violet, right? I heard you like to drive fast?" Camden's eyes were vicious. "My younger brother was only 19 years old. His life hadn't even started, yet you ran over him and reduced him to a mangled mess."
I clenched my teeth and used my only functioning right eye to look at him. My voice was trembling as I said, "It wasn't me… I didn't run over anyone! I was forced to be here to be their scapegoat!"
Camden sneered, as though he had heard a huge joke. "A scapegoat? Your parents and boyfriend of seven years would do that to you? Violet, if you want to lie, come up with something I can believe.
"Since you like cars so much, I should let you experience how it feels to get run over by one.
"According to the Scott family's rules, you have to pay a life with a life. You better pray you're strong enough to survive this ‘accident'."
I had thought that I would end up in prison again. I had not expected that Camden was not going to abide by the law.
A bunch of strong bodyguards forced me into a crappy car. They buckled the seatbelt tightly against my body.
Camden retreated to a safe distance before coldly waving at his subordinates.
From afar, a dump truck turned on its headlights. Then, I heard a loud roar of the engine before it sped directly towards the car I was in.
The loud bang pierced through the silent night.
The front of the car had completely caved in. The heavy engine was pressing against my legs.
I screamed in pain. I could clearly hear both of my legs breaking.
The huge airbag popped out and broke a few of my ribs. The broken bones pierced through my organs, and I could immediately feel blood bubbling up my throat.
My entire body was seizing in pain as I threw up mouthfuls of blood. Cold sweat covered my entire body.
Just as I was about to lose consciousness, I heard Camden's cold voice say, "Take her out of the car and toss her on the street outside of the Johnson family mansion.
"Let her succumb like a stray dog."
Chapter 2
I could feel the cold rain prickling against my skin like needles.
I was kicked out of the car by the Scott family as if I were a bag of trash. I rolled down the street and landed before the mansion of the Johnson family.
Rain mixed with my blood and tainted the road beneath me a bright red.
My legs were bent at an odd angle, and I could not move at all.
Every time I breathed, I felt my broken ribs grazing my injured organs. I was in excruciating pain.
I saw bright lights through the rain before the sound of a familiar car engine reached my ears. It pulled over right next to me.
"Ah, Luke, what's that? It's so scary!" I heard Nessa's saccharine voice through the car window. She was pretending to be scared.
The car door was opened, and I heard the sound of leather shoes stepping in the puddles.
"Mr. Johnson, I think it's… Ms. Violet." The bodyguard sounded a little hesitant.
All of them were silent for a while.
Immediately after, I heard my parents coming out of the car.
With all my strength, I pressed my bloodied and muddied hands against the ground as I painfully looked up.
"Save… save me…" My voice was very barely audible.
"Violet? Why is she here?" My father, Ronald Reid, sounded disgusted. "Didn't the Scott family take her away? Why was she dumped here on the street like a beggar?"
"How embarrassing! She's basically a jinx!" My mother, Jessica Reid, was not even willing to spare her umbrella to shield me from the rain. She was too afraid of dirtying her designer coat.
Nessa looked at me and asked timidly, "Shouldn't Violet be in prison? It's the Scott family, after all. Did Violet sleep with him and only got a beating out of it?"
After Nessa said that, everyone's expression changed.
I looked at them. My remaining right eye was bloodshot.
I extended my trembling hand and tried to grab my mother's pants. "Mom… it hurts… My legs are broken, please send me to the hospital…"
"Don't touch me!" Jessica took a step back and looked disgusted. "You're covered in mud, how dirty!"
My hand froze mid-air. The last bit of hope in my heart was extinguished by this cold winter rain.
"Enough." Luke walked toward me holding a black umbrella. He looked down at me aloofly. His voice, too, was filled with disgust. "Violet, I'm really disappointed in you."
My heart throbbed in pain.
Luke looked at me as I struggled to breathe in the muddy water. His voice sounded even colder than the winter rain.
"Since the Scott family already taught you a lesson, you should know your place. Aren't you embarrassed of yourself? Why do you have to lie here in the street for everyone to see?"
Nessa stood below Luke's umbrella and pretended to sob. "Luke, I feel so bad for Violet. Should we get her an ambulance?"
"Nessa, you're too kind," Luke sighed. His voice was filled with sympathy toward her. "Since the Scott family spared her life, she won't die. She's an ungrateful woman. She doesn't deserve to go to the hospital."
He turned to his bodyguard and instructed coldly, "Put her in the trunk of my car and bring her to the basement of the mansion. No one can get her a doctor without my permission."
I was dragged into the trunk of Luke's car and then locked up in the basement. They left me there to die.
That was the decision the man that I had loved for seven years made for me.
I no longer asked for help. I let the bodyguards drag me around like a dead dog. They grabbed my arms and dragged me along the rough road.
My broken legs were rubbing against the road. I groaned in pain before completely passing out.
Chapter 3
The heavy metal door of the basement was opened with a loud creaking sound.
I was thrown into the dark and humid corner by the bodyguards.
There were no windows there, and the air smelled like moldy cardboard boxes and dust.
The cold winter, my injuries, and exposure to the rain sent me into a high fever.
My wounds were seriously infected because of the muddy water and dust.
After a long while, I heard some scattered footsteps.
"Ms. Violet, is that you?"
An old, trembling voice said.
It was the helper at the mansion, Helen Dunne.
Back when my grandmother and I were brought back from the countryside, we often offered to help her.
She was also the only person who would treat me with respect after my grandmother passed.
With the dim light from her phone, she saw my blood-covered face as well as the empty eye socket from my prison years.
"Oh, my God! Ms. Violet, you're burning up!" Helen immediately bent down and pressed her hand against my forehead. She exclaimed in shock.
Her hands were trembling as she tried to help me up from the cold floor.
"Ms. Violet, let me help you up. The floor is too cold…"
Her hands had just touched my legs when I immediately shrieked in pain. "Don't touch them! Helen, don't touch them… My legs are broken."
Helen collapsed onto the floor in fear. In the dim light, she finally saw that my legs were limp against the floor. The blood oozing out of my pants darkened and smelled horrible.
"My legs are broken, and I was bleeding internally…" I panted. Every time I breathed, I could smell blood. "Helen, I only have a few days left."
"No! Ms. Violet, please don't say that! I'll go and beg Mr. Johnson. Even if I have to sacrifice my life, I will get you an ambulance!" Helen sobbed as she started to turn around.
"Don't go!" I screamed at her with all my strength, which caused me to start coughing violently. I coughed up a large clot of blood.
I leaned against the wall weakly and looked at her with my only eye. I smiled in defeat. "It's useless, Helen. They're the ones who threw me in here. They want me dead."
With my trembling hand, I reached up to my collar.
There was a platinum necklace around my neck with a diamond pendant.
Luke had bought it for me when he got his first profit from his start-up seven years ago.
When I was being humiliated and tortured in prison, no matter how bad the attacks were, I would always keep the necklace in my mouth to protect it, so no one would take it away.
However, time had changed. I was presently utterly disgusted by the necklace, so I tore it off. Because of the force, it left a cut on my neck.
I also passed my blood-stained ring to Helen.
"Helen, please do me a favor," I said weakly. "Return this to Luke. Tell him that I've repaid everything I owed you for our seven years together with my life. From today onward, I don't owe him anything anymore."
Helen met my surprisingly calm stare before taking the ring and nodding through tears.
I shut my eyes and sensed my soul slowly leaving my broken, feverish body.
Chapter 4
Meanwhile, the living room located on the lower floor of the mansion was brightly lit.
Luke held Nessa's hand as he comforted her after her earlier shock.
"Mr. Johnson, Helen is here. She said… she said that she has something from Ms. Violet to return to you." The butler cautiously spoke from outside the door.
Luke was peeling an apple, and that made him pause.
Nessa bit her lower lip and her eyes instantly turned red. "Violet must still be blaming me. Luke, I should move out to make Violet happy. After all, it's all my fault…"
"Don't say that!" Luke put down the knife sharply, and his eyes were filled with rage. "She's the one who offended the Scott family. Now that she's locked up in the basement, she has the audacity to feel jealous.
"How dare she try to put on this little act of returning my ring to me?"
He strode out and snatched the ring from Helen's hand.
When he opened his palm, he revealed the blood-stained diamond ring, and he felt a sudden hurt.
Luke was stunned, and his heart skipped a beat for no reason.
Helen begged him and sobbed, "Mr. Johnson, Ms. Violet said that she would use her life to repay your seven-year relationship. Please, go and have a look at Ms. Violet!
"She's having a high fever, and her legs are broken. If she doesn't receive treatment, she will really die!"
"Shut up!" Luke closed his fist around the diamond ring. The sharp edges of the diamond cut his palm, but he did not feel it.
He felt a strange anger in him as he spoke through gritted teeth. "Ha, what a show! Violet, did you think that pretending to be crippled and dying would make me give in?"
However, in the end, he still showed up.
Luke kicked the metal door of the basement open fiercely at midnight.
He was raging as he strode into the silent storage room.
"Violet, how long do you want to keep this act up?"
Luke stopped a few steps away from me. He covered his nose with his handkerchief in disgust. He sounded aloof and impatient.
"You asked Helen to bring me this ring just to force me to see you. You're pretending to be injured and sick. I bet you've learned how to play the victim after being locked up in prison for five years."
Hearing his words, I leaned against the corner and grimaced. Then, I let out a very weak sneer.
When Luke noticed that I was not speaking, he got even more angry. He took another step forward and scolded me.
"Do you know that because you've returned the ring, Nessa thought that you're still mad at her? She didn't even eat dinner because of the guilt! She's always in poor health, and she can't be frightened.
"Why can't you be understanding for once? We're only asking you to take the blame to buy some time! You just need to end up in prison one more time to protect Nessa's dancing career.
"I told you that I'll spend money to free you from prison. Why are you acting like this and putting your parents and me in a difficult spot?"
He strode forward and grabbed my arm without any mercy. Then, he pulled me up.
"Violet, stand up and apologize to Nessa!"
However, what he had imagined did not come true.
My legs could not bear the weight of my body. With his tugging, I was lifted mid-air like a puppet. My legs were bent at a scary angle as they dragged against the floor.
His fierce tug caused my broken ribs to finally pierce through my lungs.
I opened my mouth and uncontrollably threw up a huge gulp of blood mixed with pieces of my organs. The smelly blood splattered against Luke's clean tux.
Luke froze.
He was still holding my arm when he looked at the dark blood in a daze. Then, his gaze slowly shifted downward.
The dim light in the basement was shining against my body.
He finally saw that not only were my legs broken, but there were bones poking through my pants.
He finally felt the high fever coming from my body, as well as the decaying smell coming from a dying person.
I was thrown back onto the floor like a broken doll. My right bloodshot eye was staring at him without any emotion.
He finally looked a little frantic as his voice started to tremble.
"Violet…?"
