Synopsis
Our mating ceremony was only three days away. Julian, my fiancé, set two headpieces on the table. Both came from the pack's master blacksmith.
One was a heavy moonstone crown, the ultimate mark of Alpha power.
The other was just a cheap gold-plated band, shaped like a simple ring of leaves.
He didn't say a word. He didn't have to. I already knew the moonstone went to my twin sister, Stella.
Still, my fingers moved first. I pressed my palm flat against the moonstone crown. "Julian, I'm your fated mate. Don't I even deserve a real crown for our ceremony?"
Julian frowned and slapped my hand away.
"Chloe, stop. Stella leads the peace talks tomorrow. She needs to look like a true leader for the other packs. Besides, you're wolfless. A heavy rock won't make anyone respect you."
I stared at him, cold dread pooling in my chest.
I should have known better.
In a pack built on raw power, Julian only ever cared about Stella.
After every hunt, Julian handed the best cut of meat to Stella first.
The dry, overcooked scraps went to me.
At every full moon ceremony, he made Stella stand high on the altar where the Luna belonged. He claimed she had the presence to command respect. Meanwhile, as the real Luna-to-be, I shrank at the very bottom of the steps like an invisible shadow.
The Moon Goddess snapped our mate bond into place, but Julian never smiled. His first reaction was pure shock, quickly followed by deep resentment.
I looked down at the dull gold band, pulled my hand back, and stepped away from the table.
"Keep it," I said quietly. "Give both to Stella. I don't want either."
Julian rolled his eyes. He thought this was just another tantrum. "Don't be dramatic. I'll get you a better one next time."
He picked up the moonstone crown and hurried next door to find Stella.
He had no idea this was the last time I would ever step aside for her.
I was done being anyone's second choice.

Chapter 1
Cheers came from the next room right away.
I heard Stella gasp through the wall. Julian spoke in low, tender murmurs. He crowned her with his own hands.
I stood alone in the empty bedroom. The cheap gold band sat on the table. A cold draft sliced right through my chest.
Footsteps stopped by the door.
Julian walked back in with a smile on his face. The smile vanished the second his eyes met mine.
"Still throwing a fit?" He tossed two car keys onto the coffee table.
One was a matte black key for a custom supercar. It had the gold crest of a pack elder. The other key belonged to a cheap SUV. It had no keychain at all.
Julian leaned on the table and tilted his chin. "The new cars arrived. The black one belongs to Stella. She leads cross-border patrols and needs the horsepower. The silver one is for you. It handles easy and keeps you safe."
Always the same. Stella took the best. I got the scraps.
I looked at the keys. My nails dug into my palms. For the first time in my life, I refused to bow. I reached out and snatched the supercar key.
"What if I want this one?" I looked up at him and held my ground. "Julian, I am your Luna-to-be. If I drive a beat-up family car, people will treat me like your maid."
Julian frowned. Then he sighed.
"Why do you turn everything into a fight, Chloe?" His voice sounded soft, but his Alpha aura pressed down on me like lead. "Be good. What fits you best is what matters."
He pried the supercar key from my fingers. He shoved the cold, plain key into my hand.
"After the mating ceremony, I will buy you whatever you want. Deal?"
The key bit into my skin. The ache in my chest cut far deeper.
I looked at him and laughed.
"Keep it," I said, every word cold and clear. "Not just the car or the crown. Cancel the ceremony in three days. I reject the mate bond."
Julian arched a brow. "Leaving me over this? Fine. I will make it up to you."
Half an hour later, he forced me into his car and drove to the most expensive jewelry salon in town.
Stella was already sitting on the VIP couch.
"Julian! You made it!" Stella rushed to him. She looked stunning and fierce. Her eyes held pure hunger, like she was his real mate.
Julian dropped my hand at once and walked toward her.
The shop manager brought out the prized piece with trembling hands. It was a necklace of top-tier moonstones and diamonds.
"Stella has the summit dinner tomorrow. This necklace belongs on her." Julian swiped his black card without asking the price.
He clasped the priceless necklace around Stella's throat. His gaze lingered on her collarbones.
Then he turned to me. He picked up a cheap crystal ring from a gift box on the counter. He shoved it into my hands.
"Here. Purple crystal, your favorite. Happy now?"
My stomach twisted with disgust. Next to Stella, I was just background noise.
"I told you, I do not want it."
I threw the ring back onto the counter and walked out the door.
...
That night, in the estate study.
I stepped inside, still wondering why Julian called for me. Then the door slammed open.
My mother's hand cracked across my face.
My cheek went numb. My ears rang. The taste of blood filled my mouth.
"Are you insane?!" My mother pointed a finger at my face, her voice high and sharp. "You are a wolfless defect! Becoming Luna is a miracle for trash like you! How dare you speak of rejecting the bond?"
My father stood beside her, his face dark. "Your sister risks her life for this pack every day. You show no gratitude, and you humiliate Julian in public?"
"Please, calm down." Julian stepped in like a kind, forgiving Alpha. He handed my mother a glass of water.
"Chloe feels nervous about the Luna ceremony. Just some wedding jitters. I will not hold it against her."
"See that? Look how generous Julian is!" My mother glared at me with pure hatred. "Listen to me, Chloe. Reject this bond, disgrace this family, and I will exile you from the pack. You can die alone in the woods!"
Exile. The harshest punishment in our world. For a wolfless girl, it meant a death sentence.
I lowered my eyes. I hid every drop of feeling inside me.
"I understand," I said softly. My own voice sounded like a stranger. "I will do what you say."
Julian smiled. "Much better."
Late that night, I went back to my cramped room.
Stella claimed it broke pack tradition to share the master suite before the ceremony. So, despite being the Alpha's bride, I got shoved into the drafty corner room.
I left the lights off. Pale moonlight spilled over the mess on the floor.
My face still throbbed, but I shed no tears. I pulled an old burner phone from the bottom of my drawer and dialed a number.
The line clicked after two rings. Maya's voice came through.
"Chloe? Did something happen?"
I held the phone tight, my voice dead calm.
"Maya, I am not going through with this wedding. Help me run away."
Chapter 2
The next morning, Julian acted like yesterday never happened. He took me to the council hall to go over the ceremony steps.
Two thrones made of black obsidian sat at the end of the hall. They represented the absolute rule of the Alpha and Luna.
I took a deep breath and walked toward the right throne, the Luna seat.
My fingers barely brushed the armrest. Julian grabbed my shoulder. His grip clamped down like iron.
"You sit over there," he said. He pointed down the steps to a plain wooden chair. That was the Beta seat.
I froze. Cold dread washed over me. "I am your future Luna. You want me off the throne and down by the stairs?"
Julian sighed and stood in front of me.
"Stop making a scene, Chloe. The Northern Pack sent emissaries, and they arrive tonight. Stella is our Lead Warrior. She sits beside me to show our strength." His voice softened, dripping with fake kindness. "You are wolfless. Sitting down there keeps you safe. I can watch over you."
"That is the Luna throne!"
"It is just a chair. It does not change the fact that you are my mate." He frowned, treating me like a spoiled child.
The double doors swung open.
Stella strutted in, wearing sharp black combat leathers. She walked straight to the black obsidian Luna throne and dropped into it.
She looked down at me with a smirk.
"Think of the pack, Chloe. Once you have the strength to protect our people, you can have your seat back."
Julian looked at her with pure pride and trust. He walked over and poured her a glass of water.
I stood below the steps, watching them side by side.
Stella's power was her golden ticket. Me, his fated mate, did not even rate a real chair.
I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat. I turned away, walked to the wooden chair, and sat down in silence.
"Good," Julian said, pleased. "Now, let us go get your ceremony blade."
Fire roared in the master blacksmith's forge.
The old smith stepped forward, holding a black velvet box with deep respect.
He opened the lid. A stunning bone dagger lay inside.
It was no ordinary blade. The smith spent three full months carving it from the fang Julian shed during his first shift. It was the mate blade.
During the ceremony, I was supposed to cut his palm with it to seal our souls together. It meant the Alpha surrendered his ultimate weakness to his Luna.
I reached out, my fingers trembling.
"Julian!"
Stella's voice cut through the air.
She stormed into the forge, her face tight. "The Northerners refuse to camp outside our borders. I have to face them tonight."
Julian turned on his heel. "Is it dangerous?"
"They brought berserkers." Stella stared hungrily at the bone dagger. "I need your authority to hold the line. Lend me the fang blade."
My breath hitched.
"No!" the old smith gasped. "Alpha, this is the sacred Luna blade! If another wolf touches it, the ceremony will reject it!"
"Rules change with the times," Julian said, his eyes cold. He grabbed the bone dagger without hesitation.
He turned to hand it to Stella.
I locked my fingers around his wrist. "Julian, this is our mate token. You swore you carved this for your Luna!"
Julian looked at me. Guilt flickered in his eyes, but he only sounded annoyed.
"Chloe, Stella is putting her life on the line! She is defending your home! Are you really throwing a fit over a piece of bone right now?"
He shook me off and turned to Stella. He handed her the blade.
"Stay safe. If talks turn bad, draw blood. I have your back." His voice dropped into a low, gentle whisper, filled with pure devotion.
I stared as he smoothed Stella's hair behind her ear.
Once, I asked him to zip up my dress, and he snapped at me for being needy.
He knew how to be gentle. He just saved all of it for the great Lead Warrior.
Stella flashed me a mocking smile and walked away.
Silence swallowed the forge.
Julian turned back to me. He finally noticed my pale face.
He frowned, reached up to the tool rack, and grabbed a plain steel dagger. He shoved it into my hands.
"Use this for tonight," he said, as if it meant nothing. "Steel is sharp. It hurts less when you cut your palm."
I held the cheap, generic blade. I did not cry. I did not scream.
I just stared at him like he was a total stranger.
"Okay," I whispered.
Julian blinked, surprised by how easily I gave in. Relief spread across his face. "Good girl. I have to check the perimeter. Head back to the estate."
He walked out without looking back.
I stood there until his footsteps faded away.
I pulled out my cracked burner phone. A text from Maya popped up on the screen.
[The getaway car is at the north border. Wait for the blood oath tonight. When everyone bows, run for the tree line.]
I stared at the screen, my thumbs flying over the keys.
[I am not waiting for the blood oath.]
Maya texted back instantly. [What do you mean? Chloe, do not do anything crazy!]
I tightened my grip on the cheap steel dagger. The cold metal bit into my palm and cleared my head.
[It means I am cutting this mate bond in front of the whole pack tonight.]
I took out the SIM card, snapped it in half, and tossed both pieces into the roaring forge.
Flames devoured the plastic, along with every last trace of my love for Julian.
Chapter 3
"Stella, this is the biggest buck of the hunt. Eat. Keep your strength up."
At the banquet table on the lawn, Julian carved the thickest, bloodiest cut of rare venison. He dropped it right onto Stella's plate.
Tonight was my mating ceremony.
Yet the entire square cheered only for Stella. Just minutes ago, she walked back into the pack lands with a signed peace treaty, ending decades of war with the Northern Pack.
Julian turned to me. He hacked off a chewy, gristly scrap with raw veins and shoved the plate my way.
"Chloe, eat something."
The thick stench of raw blood hit my nose. I looked at the red puddle on the plate, my stomach twisting with nausea.
"Julian, I cannot eat raw meat," I said, keeping my voice flat. "I am wolfless. Raw meat makes me sick. It tears my stomach up. Why did the kitchen not make a single cooked meal?"
Julian's hand froze in midair.
Every bit of softness left his face. His brows snapped together in irritation.
"Chloe, do you have to throw a tantrum now?" he hissed, his Alpha tone bleeding through. "Everyone worked themselves to the bone setting up this ceremony. Who has time to start an extra fire just to cook your food?"
"Exactly!" My mother sneered from the side, looking at me like I was dirty street trash. "You do not even have wolf instincts, yet you whine about a little blood! Your sister just saved this pack at the negotiation table. Must the whole family cater to a defect?"
My father frowned, his lip curling in disgust. "Don't eat, then. Starve. Do not ruin tonight for this family."
I looked at them.
These people shared my blood. In their eyes, my weakness was just drama, and my very breath was a mistake.
I did not argue. I quietly pushed the plate away.
The ache in my chest was gone. Only numb, empty silence remained.
My mother turned to Julian. Her sneer instantly morphed into an eager, fawning grin.
"Julian, every Alpha from the nearby packs is here tonight. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance!"
Julian wiped the grease and blood from his hands. "Go on."
"Stella pulled off a miracle. We need to announce the treaty right at the ceremony! Let the other packs see our strength, and let everyone honor Stella!"
I snapped my head up, staring at them in disbelief.
A mating ceremony was sacred. My own mother wanted to turn it into Stella's victory party.
Julian glanced at me, torn for a split second. "Wait..."
He knew how long I waited for this night.
Then he caught the sparkle in Stella's eyes. He sighed, reaching out to wrap his fingers around my hand.
"This is huge for our pack. What if we push the ceremony back a little?" He looked into my eyes, talking himself into it. "Everyone knows you are my Luna anyway. You don't mind, right?"
He did not wait for my answer. He signaled his butler.
"Cancel the vow reading beneath the Sacred Moon Tree," Julian ordered. His voice rang loud and clear against the night air. "Clear that slot. Stella speaks then."
The butler froze, his eyes darting to me. "Alpha... the vows seal the bond before the Moon Goddess. Without them, the Luna has no real authority..."
"I said cancel it!" Julian barked, slamming his Alpha aura down like a hammer. "Since when do I repeat myself?"
The butler bowed his head instantly. "Yes, Alpha."
The three of them huddled together, laughing and talking about stage lights, seating charts, and the guest list.
Julian even reached out to adjust the diamond pin on Stella's dress himself.
Not one of them looked my way.
I was his bride-to-be. My vows were gone. I sat there like a ghost.
I stood up and walked away from the crowd.
The bonfire roared. The drums beat on. Nobody noticed me leave.
Back in my tiny guest room, I pulled my travel bag from beneath the bed.
It was light. I had almost nothing to pack.
The fancy dresses that never fit right, the cheap trinkets Julian tossed my way, I left them all behind. None of that belonged to me.
I pulled open the bottom drawer. Inside lay my worn, dog-eared notebook.
It held all the soothing herbal recipes I gathered over the years to manage my weak human body. It was the only thing in this whole estate that was truly mine.
I slid the notebook into the bag and pulled the zipper shut.
Clean and done.
A thunderous howl suddenly ripped through the night sky outside my window.
The pack was hailing Stella, their hero.
I tossed the strap over my shoulder. I walked to the window and looked down.
Stella stood right at the center of the lawn, bathed in firelight. She leaned against Julian, but her pretty eyes held an ugly flash of greed.
She tugged at Julian's sleeve. Her voice carried right up to my window, sweet and manipulative.
"Julian, it's such a shame," Stella pouted. "I risked my life for this treaty. But tonight is your mating ceremony. Everyone will forget my speech the second your ceremony starts."
The lawn went dead silent around them.
I stared at Julian's back.
He looked down at Stella with pure, sickening adoration.
I prayed for twenty years for him to look at me like that. Just once.
Then, Julian gave the order that broke everything.
It severed the very last shred of hope clinging to my soul.
"Then the ceremony waits for you," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute power.
He grabbed Stella's hand and raised it high for the pack to see.
"Butler, listen up! The mating ceremony moves to midnight! Tonight, prime time belongs to Stella!"
Chapter 4
The door slammed open.
Julian barged in, his eyes darting across the room. "Why hide in here? Good timing. Tell the Elder this was your call."
Elder Thomas followed right behind him, his face red with fury.
"Alpha, you cannot push the mating ceremony to midnight!" The old wolf's voice shook with harsh warning. "Midnight belongs to the shadows. It is an insult to your mate! The Moon Goddess will curse this union!"
Julian stopped beside my bed. His jaw clenched in frustration. Then he looked at me, forcing a soft, apologetic smile.
"Times change, Elder Thomas. We don't live in the dark ages anymore," Julian said, turning his back on the old man. "Stella's treaty secures our future. She earned this spotlight."
"What about your Luna..."
"Chloe understands," Julian cut him off.
He sat on the mattress and took my icy fingers into his warm, broad hands. His thumb grazed my skin. His eyes begged for understanding.
"Right, Chloe?" His voice dropped into a gentle purr. "Just a few more hours. After tonight, I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you. You will be the most honored Luna on the West Coast."
I looked into his dark eyes.
They held exhaustion, guilt, and a twisted kind of affection. But they held zero loyalty to me.
I pulled my hand from his grip.
"I understand," I heard myself whisper, my voice completely dead. "Do what you want."
Julian blinked, stunned by my total surrender. Unease flashed across his face, quickly replaced by pure relief.
"Good girl." He kissed my forehead and let out a long breath. "Wait for me."
Elder Thomas sighed and left. Julian rushed back to the feast.
The noise outside did not die down until nearly midnight.
The door swung open again. A thick stench of bourbon and wild Alpha pheromones filled the air.
Julian was wasted.
He stumbled across the floor, grabbed me, and crushed me against his chest. He buried his face in my neck, inhaling my scent like a starving man.
"Chloe..." His voice broke, thick with booze. "Don't hate me. I had no choice."
I stayed stiff in his arms. I did not fight him.
"You have no idea how hard this is for me," he muttered, his grip tightening like a vise. His warm lips brushed my ear. Every drunken word cut like a scalpel.
"I tried to love you... I really did. The mate bond makes sure of that."
He groaned, his thumb trailing over my cheek. "But my heart picked someone else long before the Goddess spoke. You look so much like Stella. You have her exact eyes. If you stay by my side as my Luna, Stella will never leave this pack."
My breath stopped cold.
"Stella is too proud. She only stays if she is the hero," Julian mumbled, fading fast. "This is the perfect plan, Chloe. I mark you. I keep her. Both of you stay with me forever..."
His head slumped. He fell dead asleep across my bed.
I stared at the black sky outside my window. The very last spark in my chest turned to ash.
...
11:58 PM.
Outside, fairy lights glittered across the lawn. People were cleaning up the mess from Stella's party.
Nobody cared where the bride-to-be went.
I walked alone into the dense forest behind the estate.
The clearing beneath the Sacred Moon Tree was dead silent.
I stood under the massive branches. My eyes burned, but I refused to cry.
I closed my eyes and searched for that glowing gold thread inside my soul. Julian's leash on my life.
"I, Chloe," I whispered into the cold night air, speaking the ancient words. "Formally reject you, Julian, as my fated mate."
The words left my lips.
A blinding wave of agony ripped through my soul.
My knees hit the dirt. I bit down on my lip until warm blood filled my mouth. Cold sweat soaked my clothes. An invisible claw tore through my ribs, crushing my organs.
The brutal price of breaking a sacred bond.
My whole body shook with pain, but I clamped my teeth shut and took every second of it.
Minutes passed. The golden thread snapped into pieces.
I wiped the blood from my chin and stood up. I walked out of the woods without looking back, straight to the waiting cab, headed for the airport.
Back in the bedroom, Julian woke with a violent gasp.
A white-hot blade pierced straight through his heart. He rolled off the mattress and slammed into the hardwood floor.
He coughed, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the rug.
"Chloe?" he choked out, panic seizing his chest.
The bed was cold and empty.
The other half of his soul turned to ash, vanishing from his mind completely. The rebound agony locked his muscles in a spasm. His Alpha aura completely lost control, blowing out every window in the room.
He looked up at the wall clock.
12:05 AM.
He missed midnight.
"No... no!"
Julian crawled to his feet, blood dripping down his chin, and bolted out the door.
"Chloe! Where are you?!"
He screamed into the mind-link, but the connection was gone. Dead static answered him.
He dragged himself through the woods and dropped beneath the Sacred Moon Tree. Only pale moonlight and a splash of fresh blood waited on the grass.
She was gone.
His fated mate ripped her own soul apart just to get away from him.
Julian fell to his knees, clutching his chest like a broken beast.
Fast footsteps pounded the dirt behind him.
The butler crashed through the trees. He hit his knees, his voice trembling with terror.
"Alpha... we searched the entire territory! Chloe is gone!"
