Synopsis

For ten years, I built my husband Grant's empire, only to catch him with my best friend on my birthday. He chose her and her pregnancy, even desecrated my mother's grave to appease her. When he cast me out, I lost everything—including our unborn child. So I faked my death and vanished. Six months later, I'm a powerful founder in Paris. Grant tracked me down with explosives strapped to his chest, begging for another chance. I told him to die. He did. My name is Claire Shaw. I don't look back.

Chapter 1

For ten years, I stood beside Grant Hale while he built an empire from nothing. He had never once stayed out all night. Then, on my birthday, he called me with guilt thick in his voice. "Claire, there is an emergency at the Paris office. I have to handle it myself. I should have planned better, but I don't think I can make it home for your birthday this year. I'm sorry." The moment we hung up, I booked the next flight to Paris. I thought I would surprise my husband. Instead, I walked in on something I would remember for the rest of my life. Grant had a woman pinned beneath him. Desire darkened his eyes, and his voice came out low and rough. "Vanessa, what will it take for you to keep this baby?" "We can't do this, Grant. It isn't fair to Claire..." My heart stopped. The woman in his bed was Vanessa Reed, my best friend. The woman I had loved like a sister. My hands went numb. Every drop of blood in my body seemed to turn to ice. I dug my nails into my palms until the pain pulled me back from the edge. My husband and my best friend had certainly gone to a lot of trouble for my birthday present. They had betrayed me behind my back for long enough to make a child together. Ten years of marriage. Fifteen years of friendship. Somehow, I had become the third wheel. Fine. I would remove myself. I kicked the bedroom door open. The crash made them both jerk upright. Clothes and sheets lay tangled across the room. I stared at their half-naked bodies without screaming, cursing, or asking why. "So this is the emergency?" I asked. "Getting my best friend pregnant does sound urgent." Vanessa did not even finish dressing before she stumbled toward me. She dropped to her knees at my feet, sobbing. "Claire, please let me explain. This is all a misunderstanding. We drank too much after a client dinner, and then..." She choked on her words. "It was my fault. If this hurts you, I'll terminate the pregnancy. I'll make the appointment today." What was I supposed to say to that? My best friend was carrying my husband's baby. The two people closest to me had betrayed me together. Was I supposed to thank them for feeling bad about it? After Vanessa's divorce, I had worried about her. I was the one who found her a position at Hale Holdings. At the time, she had linked her arm through mine and laughed. "Don't worry, Claire. I'll keep an eye on Grant for you. No woman is getting near him on my watch." Now she was the woman who had come between us. It was the middle of summer, but I had never felt so cold. I raised my hand and slapped her with every ounce of strength I had. The crack rang through the room, and a red mark bloomed across her perfect cheek. Vanessa stared at me, stunned, as if she could not believe I had actually hit her. I fought to keep my voice steady. "Your clothes didn't fall off by themselves." Grant rushed forward and put himself between us. Concern flashed in his eyes when he looked at Vanessa. Then he turned to me, took my hand, and spoke with the same tenderness he had used for years. "Did that hurt your hand? You know it kills me to see you upset. These hands are too delicate to hit anyone." I looked at the man who had slept beside me for a decade and did not recognize him. He lifted my hand as though nothing had happened, as though he were still the husband who treasured me above everything else. His warm breath brushed my stinging palm. Nausea rose in my throat. I yanked my hand away. "I want a divorce, Grant." He froze, then recovered almost immediately. His tone turned indulgent, like he was calming a child in the middle of a tantrum. "Don't say things you don't mean. You are my wife, Claire. That won't change because of Vanessa." He glanced meaningfully at my stomach. "But an empire this size needs an heir." My whole body began to shake. "You know why I can't have children." During the ugliest year of Grant's fight for control of the company, a former partner facing federal fraud charges had hired men to abduct me for leverage. They locked me in a tank of freezing water for an entire day and night. I survived with severe claustrophobia and internal injuries that doctors said would probably leave me infertile. Silence swallowed the room. Guilt flickered over Grant's face. I turned to Vanessa, whose eyes were swollen from crying. "Have you forgotten who helped you get away from the man who controlled your money and bruised your arms? Who paid your tuition and gave you a place to live when you had nowhere else to go?" "Please, Claire, stop." Vanessa cut me off with another sob. "It was all my fault. I betrayed you. I don't deserve to live." She suddenly lunged toward the balcony. "If this is the only way you'll forgive me, then I'll do it." Grant panicked. He grabbed her and pulled her back, then rounded on me, fury burning in his eyes. "Enough, Claire. Are you really going to drive a pregnant woman to her death?" His voice rose. "You can't give me a child. Does that mean I have to die without ever having one of my own?"

Chapter 2

The words tore through my chest. Years ago, Grant had knelt beside my hospital bed and held my hand while he made the same promise again and again. "I don't need children. I only need you. If I lose you, I might as well die." Now he was demanding to know why my damaged body should cost him the child he deserved. The bedroom had dissolved into chaos. Household staff crowded around Vanessa, speaking softly as they tried to calm her. A sharp ache spread through my lower abdomen, and cold sweat soaked the back of my dress. Before leaving New York, I had learned I was pregnant. I had come to Paris planning to tell Grant in person. I had imagined the look on his face when I gave him the miracle neither of us had dared hope for. Now there was no reason for him to know. He already believed we would never have a child. I would let him keep believing it. Grant held Vanessa as she cried against his chest. Relief filled his face, as if he had nearly lost the most precious thing in his world and had just gotten it back. I turned and left without another word, forcing myself to walk through the pain. Behind me, Vanessa cried out, "Grant, don't worry about me. Go after Claire. Apologize to her. I'm not worth this." "Don't say that," he murmured. "You are worth it, Vanessa." What a tragic pair of star-crossed lovers. I took a cab to Charles de Gaulle Airport and called the best divorce attorney in Manhattan on the way. After the kidnapping, Grant had created an irrevocable separation trust for my protection. If I ever chose to leave him, the trustee would transfer seventy percent of his personal shares and liquid assets to me. He had also signed a binding marital settlement waiving his right to challenge the transfer. At the time, he said it was for my protection. Hale Holdings was growing fast, and so was the list of people who hated him. He wanted me financially secure if his enemies ever came after us again. It turned out he had given me a way out after all. By the end of the eight-hour flight home, my shattered heart had gone numb. I went straight from the airport to my doctor. "Are you certain?" she asked, unable to hide her shock. "Pregnancy was already close to impossible for you. If you end this one, you may never have another chance to carry a child." I hesitated only a moment before nodding. With the appointment papers in my hand, I wandered into the hospital corridor. My phone rang. It was our house manager, and she sounded terrified. "Mrs. Hale, you need to get to your mother's cemetery. Mr. Hale arrived with a construction crew and paperwork claiming you approved an exhumation. They're digging up the grave." My mind went blank. I ran into the pouring rain and raced to the cemetery. When I arrived, Grant stood beneath a black umbrella, coldly directing the workers. "Stop!" I stumbled through the mud and threw myself in front of my mother's headstone. Grant gave a slight nod to the men beside him. Two massive security guards seized my arms and held me back. "Grant, this is my mother!" I fought until my shoulders burned. Rain struck my face like blades. "Vanessa has been having panic attacks because of you," he said. "She found some psychic online who told her the baby wouldn't be safe while your mother's grave faced east. Now she is obsessed with it, and stress is bad for the pregnancy. I won't take chances with my child." His expression did not change. "This is a burial plot, Claire. I am not risking a living child over it. Cooperate, and I'll have your mother reinterred somewhere beautiful." Grant did not believe in psychics. He was destroying my mother's grave simply because indulging Vanessa was easier than telling her no. Before I could answer, he turned away. "Keep going," he told the workers. "Make her watch. Maybe she'll finally learn that I have indulged her for too long." The guards forced me to my knees in front of the grave. I begged until my voice broke. I screamed until the sound disappeared into the rain. No one stopped. Eventually, I sagged between the guards like a puppet with its strings cut. I bit my lip until I tasted blood. Pain was the only thing that kept me conscious. When it was over, I struggled toward the nearest car. A guard blocked my path. "Mr. Hale said you have to walk home." My answer was barely a whisper. "Fine."

Chapter 3

I did not know how long it took me to reach the house we had once called home. Soaked through and shaking, I pushed open the front door. My belongings were scattered across the foyer. Worse, the house itself had changed. Because of my claustrophobia, Grant had once remodeled the house around me. The main floor became open plan. The bedroom and bathroom doors were replaced with frosted-glass panels, quick-release locks, and lights I could control from anywhere. In those early years, he would walk away from deals worth millions if I had a panic attack and needed him nearby. He always said the same thing. "Don't be afraid. I'm here." Now solid doors and heavy locks had replaced every accommodation he had made. "I didn't want Vanessa living alone," Grant said behind me, "so I brought her here. You studied medicine in college. From now on, you can take care of her. Consider it your apology." The sealed living room seemed to shrink around me. Fear rose like floodwater, tightening my lungs until every breath became a fight. I stared at him. "Aren't you afraid I'll hurt her or the baby?" He smiled, but there was no warmth in his eyes. "After Vanessa gives birth, she will sign away her rights. We can adopt the baby and raise him as ours. Since you can't have children, this may be your only chance to be a mother. I know you won't hurt him." He paused. "As for Vanessa, I'll send her abroad after the delivery." A bitter laugh escaped me. "So the two of you can keep playing house overseas?" A vase shattered across the room. Vanessa stood beside the broken porcelain, horror and guilt written across her face. "I'm sorry, Claire. This is all my fault. I betrayed you. I'm disgusting." She began hitting her stomach with both fists, then slapped herself again and again. Red fingerprints spread across her pale face. Grant rushed to restrain her. He pulled her into his arms, then looked at me with such hatred that it felt like a knife twisting through my ribs. "You need to stop, Claire. My patience is not unlimited. Vanessa is pregnant, and you have frightened her into a physical breakdown. What more do you want from her?" But real trauma did not look like Vanessa's performance. I would know. Acid surged into my throat. I forced it down. I no longer wanted to argue with them, and I could not survive another minute in that suffocating room. I had not eaten or drunk anything for hours. My body was already weak from shock, but I forced myself upstairs to pack. There was no room in a marriage for three people. I gathered the evidence I would need and one simple change of clothes. That was all. My attorney texted as I closed the suitcase. *The trust transfer has cleared. I have prepared the divorce petition and emergency protection filings for your signature.* I turned off my phone and looked around the house one last time. Every corner held a memory I had once believed was beautiful. I was carrying my suitcase to the door when Grant's voice stopped me. "Where do you think you're going?" He stood in the living room, his face hard and his eyes furious. "I told you. I'm leaving you." For one brief second, shock crossed his face. He had never imagined I would truly go through with it. Then he laughed. "Fine. If you want a divorce, leave behind everything I ever gave you."
