Synopsis

After five years of keeping the demon sealed away, I finally saw my sister again—inside a coffin, her body mangled beyond recognition.
The men carrying the coffin were whispering to each other.
"She died like this, and nobody even investigated? Isn't her brother-in-law some big shot?"
"Shh! She's only his sister-in-law. How could she matter more than his new lover? Mr. Smith even helped cover the whole thing up!"
"His ex-wife has been dead for five years. Ms. Sophia runs the house now!"
"They say the wedding is tomorrow, and it's going to be huge!"
For five years, I'd stayed in a graveyard, keeping a demon sealed away for my husband, Victor Smith. Meanwhile, he'd found another woman to replace me.
Worse, he'd stood by while she erased every trace of my existence and tortured my only sister for years.
When my sister finally tried to escape and come looking for me, Sophia ran her over and killed her.
I stroked what remained of my sister's face and smiled.
I'd given up everything to protect Victor. This was how he repaid me.
Fine. Then I'll stop protecting him. It's time to let the demon have him.

Chapter 1

After five years of keeping the demon sealed away, I finally saw my sister again—inside a coffin, her body mangled beyond recognition. The men carrying the coffin were whispering to each other. "She died like this, and nobody even investigated? Isn't her brother-in-law some big shot?" "Shh! She's only his sister-in-law. How could she matter more than his new lover? Mr. Smith even helped cover the whole thing up!" "His ex-wife has been dead for five years. Ms. Sophia runs the house now!" "They say the wedding is tomorrow, and it's going to be huge!" For five years, I'd stayed in a graveyard, keeping a demon sealed away for my husband, Victor Smith. Chapter 1 By the time the priest stumbled into the cellar, I was holding my sister Lily in my arms, softly singing to her. We were twins. Growing up, we'd never spent a day apart. But five years earlier, I'd chosen to stay behind and suppress the demon for Victor. As my car pulled away, Lily had chased after me in tears. "Don't go! Don't leave me alone! I'll never bug you to sing again! I'll sing for you instead! It's too lonely there! I don't want you to go!" Her sobs had nearly broken my heart. But I forced myself not to look back. Three cycles of 666 days. That was all it would take to seal the demon for good. A little over five years. Then I could go home to Lily. Instead, she was lying dead in my arms, her body crushed after being run over again and again. "What a joke. One of the last daughters of my witch bloodline didn't die of old age or while fighting a demon. She was run over by an ordinary person. Priest, I guarded this cursed ground for five years, yet I couldn't even protect my own sister. Tell me. Is that fair?" After Sophia arrived, Lily's life became a living hell. Back when I lived with the Smiths, Lily had been treated like a princess. The moment I left, they treated her worse than an animal. They kicked her, beat her, and used her as their punching bag. Five years of abuse had left her nothing but skin and bone. The only thing that kept her alive was the hope of seeing me one last time. Victor had seen it all. All he had to do was say one word, and Lily could have lived with dignity. Yet he refused because he didn't want to upset Sophia. The maid I'd left behind could only sneak into the kitchen at night, dig through the leftovers for scraps and pass them to Lily through the bars of the cage they kept her in. "They say Sophia still wasn't satisfied. She complained that Lily didn't scream loud enough when she beat her and didn't lick her shoes clean enough. Priest, you told me Lily was fine, didn't you?" Father Luca's legs gave out, and he dropped to his knees before me. He couldn't say a word in his own defense. Instead, he planted himself in the doorway, refusing to let me leave before the seal was complete. As the Great Witch of this generation, my soul could suppress the demon's curse. By doing that, the Smith family would remain rich, powerful, and untouchable for generations. Victor had only become the head of the Smith family because he'd married me. "Ma'am, you can't leave!" He spread his arms and blocked the doorway. "There's less than six months left! Then the demon will be sealed forever! When that happens, your husband and son will come to take you home. Your family can finally be together again! "If you leave now, everything you've sacrificed will be for nothing! The curse will return, the demon will break free, and your family will fall. Your husband and son will suffer too!" His whole body trembled as he desperately tried to talk me down. "What happened to Lily had to be an accident. Besides, she's already gone! But your husband and son are still alive! They're waiting for you at home! Just hold on for another six months. Once the seal is complete, you can get all the revenge you want!" How reasonable. It was the same argument he'd used to convince me five years ago. Seal the demon. Protect the family. Give your husband and son a lifetime of wealth and power. And what did I get in return? My sister's corpse. Screw being reasonable. I calmly pulled out my silver pistol and shoved the priest out of my way. "My sister's death will be paid for in blood. They are guilty. Why shouldn't I let the demon destroy them?" Chapter 2 I slammed my foot on the gas, and the car shot forward. Behind me, a flock of black crows burst from the frozen castle. I heard the demon's gleeful laughter echo behind me. I never looked back. The estate was already decked out for the wedding. Red roses lined the road from the bottom of the hill all the way up to the manor. The whole place buzzed with excitement as everyone waited for the ceremony to begin. A bridesmaid strode up and gave me a hard shove. "What are you doing here? Who let you in?" She glared at me with open disgust. I blinked. Then it hit me. She thought I was Lily. Of course she did. We were twins. Lily had been tortured day and night. Five years of suppressing the demon had left me just as thin and worn as she was. I said nothing. Julie snatched a stun baton from the belt of the guard beside her. I let out a cold laugh. "You'd beat me in front of everyone? Aren't you afraid Victor will get angry?" Julie laughed so hard she nearly cried. "Your sister has been gone for five years. Do you still think you will receive the same treatment? You have nothing to do with this family now. If Mr. Smith gets angry, it'll be because you still haven't learned to behave!" A guest nearby joined in, grinning. "Exactly! I heard Ms. Sophia tried to throw her out, but she refused to go. She kept saying she had to wait for her sister to come back. "Maybe she's gotten used to living in a dog cage and eating scraps! "The Smiths' dogs are worth more than she is. She only gets whatever Ms. Sophia tosses under the table! "I came over for dinner last month and dropped a piece of cake. She dropped to the floor and licked it right up!" As they laughed, I slowly began to understand the hell Lily had lived through while I'd been away. Victor had brought Sophia into the estate less than six months after I'd left to suppress the demon. Sophia had moved straight into my bedroom. When Lily protested, Victor had snapped at her, "Sophia pulled me out of a fire. Forget one room. I'd give her the whole estate if she wanted it. What right do you have to complain?" But taking my husband wasn't enough for Sophia. She took Lily's room too and turned it into a room for her cats. Six months later, she put honey in Lily's milk before bed, knowing full well that Lily was allergic. Lily ended up unconscious in the ICU for three days. When she finally woke up, Victor and my son, Abel, showed her nothing but disgust. "You did that to yourself because you were jealous of Sophia. Someone as vicious as you doesn't deserve to live here." Another year passed, and even Lily's boyfriend, Andrew, fell for Sophia. He ripped his family's heirloom necklace off Lily's neck and gave it to Sophia instead. Julie swung the stun baton at my arm like she was beating a disobedient dog. "Just because we show you a little respect, you think this place belongs to you? Get this straight. There's only one lady in this house, and that's my cousin Sophia!" I raised my hand and fired. Bang! Julie's eyes went wide. Her mouth fell open, but no sound came out. Then she dropped dead. The guests around us screamed and scrambled away. "Oh my God! She killed her!" "Lily's gone crazy! She killed Julie!" I smiled faintly, crouched beside her, and used my potion-soaked dagger to cut out her heart. It was nothing but a foul-smelling lump of flesh. I began to wonder what Sophia's heart would smell like. With the fresh heart in my hand, I walked into the grand hall. The wedding march was already playing. Victor stood at the altar, watching his bride with a tender smile as Sophia walked toward him. "Come to me, my love." Beside him, Abel was dressed as a little ring bearer, his face glowing with excitement. "Mommy, you look so beautiful today." I tossed the bloody lump onto the stage. It hit the microphone with a thud. Screams erupted through the hall. Amid the chaos, I asked, "Who is your lover? Who is your mommy? Is that Sophia?" Chapter 3 "It's Lily! How did she get out of the dog cage?" "Well, she is the ex-Mrs. Smith's sister." "So what? Her sister's been dead for years. What makes her think she still belongs here?" More than a hundred guests looked at me with disgust, their faces full of mockery. Andrew rushed over from the corner, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "Lily, how dare you ruin the wedding and throw raw meat on the floor? That custom-made carpet costs a fortune! Get down there and lick it clean!" I recognized him. He was Lily's first boyfriend. Before I left, he'd already proposed to her, and she'd said yes. At first, I'd been against their relationship. Andrew had grown up with nothing. After his parents died, he couldn't afford to stay in school. He ended up begging on the streets until a gang kidnapped him to harvest his organs. Lily happened to see him being taken and called the police. Afterward, she begged me to pay for his education and help him find a decent job so he could build a life for himself. Back then, he had knelt before Lily with a diamond ring in his hand, his eyes full of love. "Lily, I swear I'll treat you well for the rest of my life. If I ever betray you, may I go straight to hell!" Lily had been moved to tears. Eventually, I gave them my blessing. I even invested another 24 million dollars in Andrew's startup. And now, this was how he spoke to her? He did not even recognize me as Wendy, the twin sister of the woman he'd once sworn to love forever. Sophia walked over, wearing a patient, understanding smile. "Lily, you and your sister were very close. I understand why seeing Victor marry me would be hard for you." Andrew immediately snapped, "Understand? Wendy's been dead for years! Is Mr. Smith supposed to mourn her forever and let Abel grow up without a mother? Besides, Sophia pulled Mr. Smith out of a fire. She saved his life and, in a way, Abel's too. Sophia breathed in toxic smoke while saving him, and her immune system will never fully recover! Even if Wendy were still alive, she should be grateful enough to step aside for Sophia! You're just her sister. What right do you have to come here and cause trouble? How many beatings will it take before you finally learn your lesson?" Learn my lesson? For years, Sophia had ruled the household and treated Lily however she pleased. Whenever Lily said she missed me, Sophia destroyed things that had belonged to me and burned my photos right in front of her. Whenever Lily tried to stop her, Sophia accused her of trying to kill her and used it as an excuse to punish her even more. Sophia treated Lily like a dog, beating her three times every single day. With every beating, she forced Lily to scream in pain and lick her shoes. The Smiths had actual dogs, yet Lily was treated worse than any of them. She wasn't even allowed to eat their dog food. She had to survive on scraps she dug out of the trash. Eventually, Andrew came looking for Lily after he hadn't heard from her for a while. By then, the abuse had nearly broken Lily. Seeing Andrew must have felt like her last chance to escape. But Andrew looked at Lily locked inside a dog cage, then at Sophia, the new lady of the house. It took him only two seconds to choose. He ripped his family's heirloom ruby necklace from Lily's neck and handed it to Sophia right in front of her. I couldn't imagine what Lily must have felt in that moment. In front of me, Andrew became more worked up with every word. "Ms. Sophia told you to act like a dog. Who gave you permission to stand? Get down on all fours and crawl back into your cage! For old times' sake, maybe I'll put in a good word for you. I might even toss you a few pieces of cake later." He smirked at me. "Remember, if you die, you'll never get to see your sister again." A thought suddenly crossed my mind. How many times had he used that threat on Lily? I raised the pistol and told him softly, "Lily has already seen me. Now she wants to meet every last one of you." Chapter 4 I aimed the pistol at Andrew's head. The bodyguards rushed at me. One of them knocked my arm aside, sending the shot wide. I tried to fire again, but someone grabbed my arms from behind while another guard kicked my legs out from under me, forcing me to my knees. The pistol hit the floor with a clatter. Victor stormed toward me, his eyes burning with rage. "Lily! Just because you're my sister-in-law, do you really think you're important?" Abel's small face went pale. He inched closer to Victor and tugged on his hand. "Dad, that piece of meat looks like a heart! Is that Julie? She's crazy! Get her out of here!" He looked at me with pure hatred and disgust. So this is the wonderful son I gave birth to. I burst out laughing. Victor slapped me hard across the face. I spat out a mouthful of blood and looked up at him. "Victor, you stood by while Sophia tortured me for years. Did you ever stop to think about what you'd say to Wendy when she came back?" Victor scoffed, "Sophia saved my life, so she's Wendy's savior too. If your sister were here, she'd be grateful to Sophia." Grateful? Abel curled his lip. "Why did you bring up that woman again? Mommy got sick saving Daddy, and you upset her every day! Now you've killed Julie too. Why don't you just die?" Sophia choked back a sob. "Lily, I know you hate me, but what did Julie ever do to deserve this? Whatever problem you have with me, take it out on me. Why did you have to kill her?" She leaned closer. The grief instantly disappeared from her voice. "You're harder to kill than I thought. I tried to run you over again and again, and you still didn't die? Now that you've murdered someone in front of all these witnesses, there's no way you'll escape the death penalty! "Since you're going to die anyway, I might as well tell you the truth. I'm perfectly healthy. There was never anything wrong with my immune system." I trembled with rage. My blood churned inside me, and I suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood. Sophia jumped back, but a few drops still splashed onto the hem of her wedding dress. She glared at me. "How dare you get blood on my wedding dress! Fine, I've changed my mind. Forget prison. I'll sell you to some underground freak show and make you perform like an animal! "As for that sister of yours, I'll make you eat her ashes. You really don't know, do you? Your sister's been dead for years! I'm the one running this household now! That bitch can only envy me from the grave!" Envy? I looked at her and laughed, even as blood ran down my chin. "I do envy you, Sophia." Before Sophia could understand what I meant, I tore free of the guards and lunged at her heart with my dagger. "Stop her!" Victor threw out a hand to shield Sophia's heart. I changed course. One hand closed around Sophia's throat while I pressed the dagger against her face with the other. Black markings began spreading across my skin. Victor watched the black lines race over my skin and suddenly froze. His voice faltered. "Are you Lily or Wendy?" As Sophia screamed, I dragged the dagger across her face, cutting deep into her skin. Then I smiled. "Honey, it's only been five years. Have you already forgotten what your wife looks like?"
