Synopsis

When Jamie, my childhood best friend, shoved a plastic container of durian into the ultra-low-temperature lab refrigerator, I didn't reach out to grab his arm. I didn't snatch the pungent, spiky fruit from the shelf, either.

Dr. Crawford’s grief-stricken wife and grown sons cornered me in the hospital corridor, screaming that I had murdered their father, demanding an eye for an eye.
I didn't learn the truth until after the humiliation drove me into an early grave.

Jamie had smiled to my face, but underneath, his pride had
