Synopsis
"Seven years. Homemade soup at 2 a.m. Six months sleeping on a hospital floor for his mother. All so my fiancé Shane could feel like a man — while I hid the fact that I'm the Sharp Industries heiress.
Then his ""childhood sweetheart"" comes back. Ten minutes before our engagement, she waves the cancellation text in my face. Sixty tables of his relatives clap.
So I walk next door — and accept the alliance offer from Damien Cross, the most feared Don on the East Coast.
One week later, I'm engaged to a mafia king. And Shane? Shane's about to learn what happens when you cross the Cross Family."

Chapter 1
Ten minutes before my engagement party, my fiancé's ex walks in waving a text on her phone — the venue's cancellation confirmation — while sixty tables of his relatives clap like it's Shark Tank.
The head table sits empty. The hotel manager, sweating through his suit, quietly wheels the food back into the kitchen.
Shane's groomsmen are doubled over laughing. One of them jabs a finger in my face.
"Ivy Sharp, you really thought throwing this circus would lock Shane down?"
"Everybody knows Shane's got commitment issues, and you're the one shoving 'engagement' down his throat every single day!"
"This whole cancellation? It's Shane's little wake-up call for you, sweetheart!"
Shane leans against the doorframe, smirking like he owns the room.
"I told you I've got marriage trauma, and you still book sixty tables to strong-arm me? If I don't cure you now, you'll be holding a wedding gun to my head forever."
The manager slides up while the whole room laughs at me.
"Ma'am, it's a holiday weekend. Every private room is booked. If you cancel, your guests will have to share tables in the main hall."
Shane's little sister Sienna is laughing so hard she's holding the wall.
"Look, guys! The gold-digger's face is turning green! Come on, cry a little! Beg my brother to marry you!"
I shove Shane's hand off my shoulder. And in front of sixty tables of his relatives, I walk straight next door to the private room across the hall.
I knock once.
"Mr. Cross. That marriage alliance you offered me last week—is it still on the table?"
Not a second of hesitation.
"It's on the table."
"One week from tonight. The Cross Family will be ready for the wedding."
---
I smile. I turn around and walk right back into the disaster.
Shane is still slouched against the doorframe. Pete lets out an obnoxious whistle.
"Wow, Ivy, if you're gonna fake-cheat to make Shane jealous, at least pick a better script!"
"He cancels one party and you're already grabbing some random guy off the street?"
Sienna is laugh-crying into the wall.
"An alliance? Yeah, right! You've been chasing my brother like a lost puppy since freshman year!"
"If you left him alone for one day, I'd light a candle at church, I swear to God!"
I close my eyes. Three years ago flashes back — the day Shane introduced me to his family.
He had a stomach bug. I drove to his place every night for a week with homemade chicken soup.
He held me tight and swore he'd never let me down.
Now all that love is just me "throwing myself at him."
I ignore the insults, grab my purse, and turn to leave.
That's when Shane finally decides to move toward me.
Classic Shane. Let everyone tear me apart, then swoop in as the good guy.
"Everybody chill out."
"Ivy, look — I should've told you about the cancellation, but I did it to snap you out of it."
"You've been talking wedding, wedding, wedding for months. I can't sleep."
"I told you I've got issues, and you still throw this massive circus? What is this if not emotional blackmail?"
I stare at him. My chest tightens.
"Shane, you picked the date. You mailed the invitations."
"Every single one of those sixty-six tables? Your aunts, your uncles, your cousins."
"If you were so scared of marriage, why didn't you say something months ago?"
"Or is it just that Sloane came back to town, and suddenly the word 'wedding' gives you a panic attack?"
Shane freezes for a second.
"Ivy, don't twist my words."
"I said I have trauma. Sloane was kind enough to help me cancel, and instead of thanking her, you're throwing dirt on her name?"
I stare at him. Then I laugh — short, bitter.
"Fine."
"If you don't want to get engaged, give me back the ring."
"I've got someone else I want to give it to."
Shane's face locks up.
Sienna jumps in first.
"Yeah, about that ring — you're not getting it back!"
"My brother thought the design was cute, so he let Sloane try it on a few days ago."
"Pretty things always go to Sloane first. You know how it is."
Sloane, sitting in her chair, cutely covers her mouth.
"Oh, Sienna, stop it, you're embarrassing me!"
Then she lifts the chain around her neck — and dangling from it is my engagement ring.
I laugh once. Cold. I reach out, grab the ring, and rip the chain straight off her neck.
Sloane screams.
I don't care. I flip the ring over and look inside the band.
Where my initials and Shane's should be engraved? It now says "SW."
Sloane. Whitfield.
I hold the ring up so Shane can see it.
"This is your marriage trauma?"
For the first time all night, Shane looks uncomfortable.
I laugh once more — and whip the ring straight at his chest.
"For seven years — when your mother was in the hospital, I slept in that recliner for six months."
"When your sister got arrested for a DUI, I was the one at the precinct at 3 a.m. bailing her out."
"Now your ex is back. Fine. I know when I'm not wanted."

Chapter 2
I stand up to leave. Shane grabs my wrist.
"You're really throwing a tantrum over something this small?"
"Look, I promise — once I work through this, I'll throw you a whole new engagement party. Deal?"
He pulls a stapled document out of his bag. A prenup.
"Read it. If you sign, we can be engaged by next week."
I flip through it. My eyes narrow.
Post-engagement: no marriage license may be requested for five years.
If the bride initiates the marriage license process, she forfeits her trust fund payout and any claim to Vaughn family assets.
I almost laugh out loud.
The Vaughn family's whole net worth isn't even a fifth of what my family has for pocket change.
Pete slams the table, cackling.
"Damn, Shane, this is genius."
"Ivy, you've been screaming 'wedding, wedding' for months. Everybody knows you're just after the Vaughn family control."
"So sign it. Prove you're not in it for the money."
I look at him. Cold.
"Me? After the money? Let me clear something up for you."
"This engagement party — the seven-figure catering bill? I paid for every penny."
"You Vaughns are so rich? Great. Tell me — what did you actually put on the table tonight? Zero?"
Sienna rolls her eyes.
"Doesn't matter how loaded your family is. Nobody wants you anyway."
"My brother has childhood trauma. Marriage terrifies him."
"You've been holding weddings over his head like a gun to his head. You're trying to break him!"
I close my eyes. I hear my father's voice.
He always said Shane was flighty. Unreliable.
He said the day I got married for real, he'd sign Sharp Industries over to me.
So I went all in. I busted my ass to prove Shane was worth betting on.
Turns out — I lost.
I laugh bitterly. Right then, Sloane's phone buzzes.
She looks at the screen — and collapses straight into Shane's arms.
"Shane, it's my ex. He's stalking me again."
"We broke up months ago and he won't stop... Shane, I'm scared."
She clutches her chest, gasping like she's dying.
Shane — the same Shane who was just crying "marriage trauma" thirty seconds ago — snaps into action.
He drops everyone. He crouches in front of Sloane, cradling her face.
"Baby, don't be scared. I'm here."
"If he touches you one more time, I'll take you down to City Hall myself tomorrow morning."
"You want a home? I'll give you a home. Right now."
The whole room goes dead silent.
Sixty-six tables of relatives just watched that. Nobody says a word for me.
They just sit there, chewing popcorn on the inside.
I grab the pitcher of ice water off the table. And I dump it straight over Shane's head.
"Shane. Thought you had 'marriage trauma'? Guess it's selective, huh?"
I nod.
"Great."
"If you can hand her a ring on the spot, then this engagement is officially dead."
I get home. My mom rushes to the door, worried sick.
"Ivy, honey, Shane just called me. He said you two had a little argument at the hotel."
"What on earth happened? He cancelled the whole engagement?"
Shane has the nerve to fish for info through my mother.
I laugh, dry. I'm about to tell her everything when my phone explodes with notifications.
Sienna dumped my entire text history with Shane into the family group chat.
Both sides of the family are reading every desperate message I ever sent.
"Shane, what color plates for the head table?"
"Send me the guest list, I'll book cars for pickup."
"Can you swing by the jeweler after work about the engraving?"
Every single text — hours of me trying to get things right. Hours of me trying to make him proud.
Sienna posts a voice message in the group. Laughing.
"Look at this. Who plans an engagement like she's running a hostage negotiation?"
"Checking in twenty times a day about napkin colors? I'd lose my mind."
The group chat erupts. Every Vaughn relative piling on.
"For real. Some girls have zero self-respect."
"Throwing yourself at a man like that — nothing good ever comes of it."
And Shane himself? He reposts one of the screenshots.
His caption: "I literally can't breathe. Let me exhale."
I stare at the screen. My hands are shaking.
Seven years. Seven years I gave that man. And to him, all of it was just one long clingy joke.
I take a deep breath.
It's fine. I still have Damien Cross.

Chapter 3
My mom's still watching me, worried. I force a smile and wave her off.
The second I close my bedroom door, my father calls.
"Ivy. Made any decisions about settling down yet?"
"You know the deal. You get married first, then the board hands you Sharp Industries. No arguments."
I hold the phone. My eyes are clear for the first time in months.
"Dad. Don't worry. I've got it handled. Give me one week — I'll have an answer you'll like."
I hang up. Sink into the couch. And it hits me — how insane the last three years have been.
Shane's whole song and dance. On loop.
"My family messed me up. I'm broken inside. Marriage terrifies me."
"Just don't push for a ring, and I'll love you more than any husband ever could."
Turns out it was never trauma. It was a get-out-of-jail-free card so he never had to commit.
My phone screen lights up. Sloane just posted an Instagram carousel.
Wedding photos.
There's Shane. In a matching tux. On one knee.
Carefully — tenderly — arranging the train of Sloane's white gown.
Looking at her the way he never — not once — looked at me.
Sienna commented under the post. Zero subtlety.
"Some girls beg for seven years and get nothing. Others just crook a finger and get the whole galaxy."
They must've forgotten they didn't block me.
Because at almost the exact same moment, Shane texts me.
"Ivy, my stomach is acting up again. Need a few days to rest."
"Don't bother me this week. I need space."
I laugh, short. Then I hit FaceTime.
It rings forever before he finally picks up, fumbling.
I lift the corner of my mouth. The camera is shaking violently. The background is all white silk and champagne.
The audio bleeds through.
"Congratulations to the beautiful bride and groom!"
"Mr. Vaughn, your fiancée looks like this dress was made for her!"
Shane's eyes dart everywhere. His hand shoots up to muffle the mic.
Caught red-handed. His face flips through five different colors.
Then, in the span of about four seconds, he flips it around. Gets defensive.
"Ivy, don't get the wrong idea."
"Sloane's last relationship gave her PTSD around wedding dresses. I'm helping her work through it."
"And, hey — helps me get over my marriage fear too. It's a win-win, right?"
I look at his self-righteous face. And the last flicker of anything I felt for him just... dies.
I don't ask him to come home. I don't tell Sloane to delete the post.
I just laugh, once. And hang up on him.
Then I screenshot everything. Every text. Every photo. Every second of that video call.
Ammo. For when I need to prove I was never the crazy one.
The week flies by.
Tonight — my engagement party with the Cross Family.
That morning, I dial Shane one last time.
Consider it a farewell gift to my own seven wasted years.
He picks up. Still cocky.
"Ivy Sharp. I knew you couldn't live without me."
I don't correct him. My voice stays flat.
"Noon. Our coffee shop."
"One last meeting. If you show up on time, I'll give you one last chance to explain yourself."
Shane laughs on the other end.
He thinks he's got me right where he wants me.
"Told you. You couldn't last three days."
"I'll be there. On the dot."
