My three-month pregnant wife was rushed to the emergency room in the middle of the night by her male coworker.
Vigorous physical activity had caused a ruptured corpus luteum and massive internal bleeding!
In the end, the baby was gone, and my wife slipped into a coma.
I lost my mind, hunting down her coworker like a madman…
Ding!
The elevator doors slid open, and I bolted out into the hallway.
In front of the OR, a man was pacing back and forth like a nervous wreck.
Hearing my footsteps, he spun around to face me.
The moment his face came into view, my stomach dropped, and suspicion instantly flooded my mind.
I had met him a few times before. I recognized him immediately.
It was Mark, my wife's coworker.
What the hell was he doing here in the middle of the night?
I work night shifts at a suburban water monitoring station.
With flood season approaching, someone had to monitor the station overnight, and tonight was my turn.
Just twenty minutes ago, I had received an urgent call from the hospital.
They told me my wife had been brought in with severe hemorrhaging, was already unconscious, and had just been wheeled into the operating room.
The nurse had used my wife’s fingerprint to unlock her phone and called the contact saved as "Husband."
I nearly lost my mind from panic.
After blurting out a quick excuse to my coworker on shift, I sped all the way here.
Yet the last thing I expected was to see Mark standing outside the operating room at past eleven at night…
"Ethan, please, just let me explain—"
Mark seemed to notice the look on my face. He froze, stammering as he tried to speak.
"Why is she bleeding so heavily in the middle of the night?"
I cut him off furiously, stepping right into his space. "She’s pregnant! What did the doctor say?!"
"Uh, well… Ethan, please calm down."
Under my freezing, murderous glare, Mark visibly panicked.
He started stuttering, "Chloe should be fine… The doctor said it was… well, a ruptured corpus luteum!"
A ruptured corpus luteum?
A sharp breath caught in my throat. My eyes went wide, and my brain short-circuited.
I hadn't really known what a corpus luteum was before.
Until I came across a viral video on TikTok a while back. A married woman had snuck around with her side piece, and things got so rough and intense that her corpus luteum ruptured, landing her in the ER.
Ever since then, I knew what it was.
And I knew that it almost never ruptures on its own—not without intense external impact or aggressive physical activity.
In other words…
While I was stuck on the graveyard shift at the station, my wife, Chloe, was engaged in "intense physical activity" in the dead of night?
And standing right in front of me was her male coworker, Mark…
Did I really need to connect the dots any further?
"E-Ethan… please don't get the wrong idea!"
Mark had probably seen that same TikTok.
He clearly knew what a ruptured corpus luteum implied, and why it usually happened.
On top of that, my face was twisted with pure rage.
Anyone with eyes could read the murderous intent pouring off me.
Mark looked terrified now, desperately waving his hands. "It wasn't me! I swear, I have nothing to do with this—"
If it wasn't you, was it me?!
I was the idiot stuck working the night shift out in the suburbs!
"You motherfucker!"
His excuses only poured gasoline on my fury.
With a roar, I threw a punch straight at his jaw.
"Ow!"
Caught completely off guard, Mark took the hit right to the cheek, stumbling back several steps. "Ethan! A-Are you crazy?! Can't we talk like reasonable adults?!"
Reasonable adults?!
You sleep with my pregnant wife in the middle of the night until she bleeds out, and you want to talk like reasonable adults?!
I laughed out of sheer, venomous rage. I didn't waste another breath on him. Clenching my fists, I lunged forward again.
You dare touch my wife?
If I didn't beat the living daylights out of this scumbag tonight, my name wasn't Ethan Miller!I was completely out of control, lunging at him like an enraged beast.
Mark was terrified out of his mind.
He didn't even bother trying to explain anymore. Turning on his heel, he sprinted into the stairwell and bolted down the stairs.
"Run while you can, you coward!"
"You can run, but your office isn't going anywhere! I'm coming for you!"
I stopped at the entrance of the stairwell, panting with rage, and spat out the threats before storming back to the operating room doors.
The emergency surgery was still underway.
I chained through two cigarettes by the window before the pounding in my chest began to slow down.
Yet my gut only twisted further.
The thought of my sweet, gentle wife doing something so filthy behind my back made me violently sick to my stomach.
It felt like swallowing a mouthful of poison.
And yet, despite the disgust, a sickening wave of worry washed over me.
No matter how awful she was, she was still carrying my baby.
Wait—the baby!
The horrifying realization finally slammed into me.
Chloe was barely three months along.
With a ruptured cyst and massive blood loss, what happened to the pregnancy?
What if the baby didn't make it…
A cold chill ran down my spine, dropping me into absolute dread. My heart leaped into my throat.
For the next half hour, I couldn't sit still for a single second.
I paced the sterile corridor outside the OR like a caged animal.
The second the red surgical light flicked off, I practically launched myself at the doors.
A nurse pushed the double doors open and gently moved me aside.
Right behind her, a gurney was wheeled out. Chloe lay on it, her face as pale as a sheet, eyes shut, completely unconscious.
"Doctor! How is my wife?"
The lead surgeon was an experienced woman in her fifties.
I grabbed her arm in desperation, asking frantically, "What about the baby? Is our baby okay?"
"What were you expecting? Do you have any idea how dangerous a ruptured corpus luteum with massive internal bleeding is? We barely saved her life."
The doctor looked at me, her gaze softening slightly as she took in my shattered expression.
She pulled her arm free and let out a heavy sigh:
"Don't beat yourself up too much. You two can still have children in the future. Be thankful she survived."
"It's fortunate she was brought in so quickly. She's stabilized now."
"However, she lost a tremendous amount of blood and her body is extremely weak. I gave her a mild sedative so she can rest."
"Listen to me: when she wakes up, do not agitate her. Be supportive, speak gently, and keep her calm."
With that, the doctor shook her head and walked off down the hall.
The nurse wheeled the gurney away toward the recovery room.
I stood frozen on the cold hospital tiles, my face drained of all color, ears ringing in deafening silence.
Gone?
My baby was gone?
That child had only been growing inside her for three months.
We didn't even know if it was a boy or a girl yet. And now, they would never get the chance to see this world.
The blow struck me with devastating weight.
And when I remembered that this tragedy happened simply because my wife wanted a cheap thrill in the middle of the night, a volcanic wave of fury erupted in my chest.
That shameless, deceitful woman had murdered our child with her own hands. I would never forgive her.
And that bastard Mark.
He knew she was pregnant, yet he couldn't keep his hands to himself? He sneaked into my home for a midnight thrill?
He had been so rough that he literally killed my child.
This was unforgivable.
I swore to God, I wasn't going to let him get away with this…I smoked nearly two whole packs of cigarettes that night.
Even though there was an extra bed in her hospital room, I couldn't bear to lie down. I spent the entire night sitting on the cold steps of the stairwell, smoking one cigarette after another.
As soon as dawn broke, I called my mom.
I asked her to take the morning bus from her town to help look after Chloe.
By eight in the morning, my mom rushed into the hospital, her eyes red and puffy from crying on the way over.
My Aunt Clara had come along with her.
Chloe was still asleep.
I couldn't hide the truth about the baby, so I broke the news to my mom right there in the hallway.
"What?! My grandbaby is gone?!"
The moment she heard the news, my mom went completely pale. She swayed on her feet, nearly collapsing before Aunt Clara caught her by the arms.
"Oh God…"
"My poor grandbaby! What did our family do to deserve this curse?!"
Collapsing onto a waiting bench in the hallway, my mom broke down in gut-wrenching sobs.
Other patients poked their heads out of nearby rooms, whispering and watching the spectacle.
A nurse walked over from the station, sternly reminding us to keep our voices down so we wouldn't disturb the patients.
My head was pounding. All I could think about was that scumbag Mark.
It was almost eight-thirty. After telling Aunt Clara to keep an eye on things, I stormed out of the hospital and drove straight to Chloe's office.
Chloe and I had been married for three years. I had visited her workplace plenty of times.
Most of the people in her department knew who I was.
Today, though, the fury written across my face was terrifying.
The coworkers I bumped into in the hallway froze in shock, too intimidated to ask what was wrong.
"Where is that bastard Mark?!"
I searched the whole floor and couldn't find him.
Losing my patience, I grabbed a random guy by the collar, gritting my teeth. "Where are you hiding him?!"
"E-Ethan?! Are you looking for Mark? What happened?!"
The guy jumped out of his skin.
He stammered, pointing down the corridor, "Right when you walked in, I saw Mark darting toward the emergency exit!"
Guilty conscience!
Why else would he run the second he saw me?
"Fuck!"
"You think you can hide from me?!"
I shoved the guy aside and bolted toward the stairwell.
Unfortunately, fast as I was, I was still one step behind.
By the time I burst into the parking lot below, Mark had already peeled out in his sedan and vanished down the street.
From the looks of it, he wouldn't dare show his face at work for days. He’d probably take time off to lay low.
"Let's see how long you can hide, you coward!"
"You think you can just abandon your entire career?!"
Boiling with rage, I cursed under my breath, climbed back into my car, and drove back to the hospital.
The moment the elevator opened on Chloe's floor, my mom's screeching voice echoed down the hall. My stomach clenched, and I broke into a run toward the room.
A crowd of patients and nurses had already gathered outside Chloe's door.
My mom's shrill screams blasted through the open door, punctuated by Aunt Clara’s desperate attempts to quiet her down.
I pushed my way through the onlookers.
As soon as I reached the doorway, I saw my mom standing over Chloe’s hospital bed, one hand on her hip, the other pointing straight at Chloe, who had already woken up.
My mom was spewing venom:
"You shameless, filthy tramp! You were already carrying a child, and you still couldn't keep your legs shut?! Sneaking another man into the house the second my son went on night shift?!"
"Having your dirty fun until you bleed out like a pig—do you have no shame at all?!"
"My poor grandbaby! You butchered my grandchild for a cheap thrill!"
"Oh, God…"
"Now that my grandchild is gone, my life is ruined! I'll tear you apart myself!"
Overcome with hysterical grief, my mom shook off Aunt Clara's grip and lunged at Chloe with her nails bared…
