Synopsis

I come home after six months away on Vescari family business and find another woman living with my fiancé.
Adrian claims she is only his trainee. He even “rents” my townhouse to her for fifty dollars a month.
Then I discover she has been sleeping in my home, giving away my private art collection, and treating my fiancé like her own.
The funniest part?
She thinks Adrian owns everything.
The house is mine. His position came through my family. Even the Mafia protection he wears so proudly exists because he is engaged to me.
So I end the engagement, take back the Vescari ring, and take back everything else with it.

Chapter 1

I had been away for six months handling business for the Vescari family, so my fiancé, Adrian, moved into our new home alone. Every month, he sent me fifty dollars and jokingly called it “rent for his future wife.” Then the dinner photos he posted online changed. One plate became two. A friend teased me. “Looks like someone’s already practicing married life. Better get home before another woman steals your place.” I laughed and caught the first flight back that night to surprise Adrian for his birthday. But when I reached the townhouse, the access code wouldn’t work. I tried again. Still wrong. Just as I was about to call Adrian, the door opened. A young woman stood there in an apron, holding a spatula. She looked me up and down, then smiled sweetly. “Sorry, you’ve got the wrong house. This is my home.” I froze. “What?” “No problem.” She smiled. “Just check more carefully next time.” She shut the door right in front of me. I looked up at the number beside it. 27. No mistake. This was the townhouse prepared for Adrian and me before our wedding. The renovation had been finished right before I left, and I had personally supervised most of it. There was no way I had come to the wrong place. I immediately called Adrian. “Did you change the access code?” I stared at the closed door. “And why is there a woman living inside?” His voice came through broken and unclear. Then the private garage gate opened. Adrian walked in carrying several grocery bags. “Serena, the signal’s bad. I’ll call you later.” He hung up. Then he looked up and saw me. We stared at each other. The door behind me opened again. The young woman immediately brightened. “Adrian! What took you so long?” She hurried over. “I heard your voice from inside and came right out to open the door for you. See how much I pay attention to you?” Her voice was soft and playful. I hadn’t eaten all day. I had rushed back just to surprise him. Now my stomach hurt from anger. I looked at Adrian and gave a cold laugh. “Adrian…” I deliberately dragged out his name the way she had. “You’d better give me a very good explanation.”

Chapter 2

“I’m sorry, Serena. I really didn’t recognize you.” The young woman clasped her hands together and smiled apologetically. Adrian carried the groceries into the kitchen. “Serena, I didn’t know you were coming back early. I forgot to tell you.” He glanced at her. “This is Lila Hart. She’s a trainee at one of the Vescari logistics companies.” He cleared his throat. “She moved here for work and couldn’t afford a decent place nearby. A few times, I found her sleeping at the office.” “I’m her supervisor, so I felt bad for her.” He paused. “I let her stay here temporarily.” Lila immediately nodded. “Adrian really saved me.” She started arranging dinner on the table. “If he hadn’t helped me, I probably would’ve ended up sleeping in my car.” Then she smiled at me. “So please don’t blame him.” She pointed toward the food. “I wanted to do something for his birthday.” She stuck out her tongue. “I’m terrible at cooking, though. Adrian usually does that.” My eyes moved to him. Lila kept smiling. “So I picked something simple tonight. Steak, salad, and wine.” She pulled out another chair. “And now that you’re back, we can celebrate together.” Lila had only graduated from college recently. She looked young, lively, and harmless. But I heard the message behind her words. She couldn’t cook. So Adrian had been cooking for her. She was celebrating his birthday in my home. Like she had already taken my place. Adrian and I met in college. He chased me for three years before I agreed to date him. After six years together, we got engaged and set the wedding date. For the Crowell family, our marriage would also make their alliance with the Vescari family official. Everything had already been arranged. And while I was gone for six months, Adrian had somehow moved another woman into the home meant for us. I looked at him coldly. What the hell had he been doing behind my back?

Chapter 3

“Serena, I hope you don’t mind using the guest set.” Lila smiled as she placed matching plates and wine glasses in front of herself and Adrian. Then she went back into the kitchen to help him. The two of them talked and laughed like a couple. Meanwhile, I sat in my own home feeling like the guest. My stomach turned. I looked at the untouched food. “Adrian.” My voice cut through their laughter. “You said you rented the place to her. Where’s the lease?” Adrian frowned. “Serena, it was just a formality. I didn’t think we needed paperwork.” I gave a cold laugh. “Fine. Then how much is the rent?” “Lila pays me.” He leaned against the counter. “If you want it, I can transfer it to you. But honestly, she’s been keeping the place clean while you were away.” He glanced at her. “If anything, we should probably be paying her for taking care of it.” I almost laughed in his face. Lila twisted her fingers together. “So should I send the rent to you from now on?” She smiled shyly. “Adrian knows I don’t make much, so he only charges me fifty dollars a month.” She pulled out her phone. “I haven’t paid this month yet. I can send it to you now.” Then she looked straight at me. The smile was still there. So was the challenge. “Fifty?” I stood up. Adrian’s expression shifted. “This townhouse is in one of the most expensive districts in the city.” I pointed toward the windows. “It’s minutes from the Vescari logistics headquarters. A place like this rents for at least twenty thousand a month.” I stared at him. “And you gave it to her for fifty dollars?” Adrian said nothing. I laughed coldly. “Adrian, are you renting her the house…” I looked at Lila. “…or are you renting her yourself?” His face darkened immediately. “Serena, enough.” He slammed his hand against the counter. “It’s my birthday. You came back early to surprise me, not start a fight.” “A fight?” “Lila is my subordinate. I was helping her.” His voice grew sharper. “There is nothing going on between us.” Then he looked at me with open irritation. “You’re seriously jealous because I helped someone who needed it?” He gave a bitter laugh. “If your mind is dirty, everything looks dirty.”

Chapter 4

I let out a cold laugh. “Adrian, this isn’t some random property you can rent out whenever you feel like it.” I looked around the townhouse. “This is supposed to be our home after the wedding.” “We’re not even married yet, and you already moved another woman in.” I stared at him. “Do you even still want to get married?” Adrian’s face changed. His voice softened immediately. “Of course I do.” “Serena, you’re making this bigger than it is.” “When we get married, Lila can move out.” Meow. I looked down. A tabby cat rubbed against Lila’s leg. She immediately picked it up. “Come here, baby.” Then her eyes turned red as she looked at Adrian. “Adrian, we found him together when he was still a stray.” She hugged the cat closer. “He finally has a home now.” Her voice trembled. “If I have to leave when you get married…” She lowered her eyes. “I guess neither of us will have anywhere to go.” One woman. One cat. Both looking like they were about to be thrown onto the street. Adrian’s jaw tightened. He looked at them for a moment, then turned to me. “Serena…” “Would it really be right to throw them out like this?” I stared at him. He hesitated, then said, “What if we postpone the wedding for a little while?” My expression froze. “Just until Lila finishes the trainee program and saves enough money to rent somewhere nearby.” “Then we can get married.” For a second, I thought I had heard him wrong. He had already rented our future home to another woman for fifty dollars a month. Now he wanted to postpone our wedding so she and her stray cat could keep living here. Then I remembered something. Three months ago, I had called Adrian late at night after finishing work. I heard running water in the background. He told me he was taking a shower. Then I heard a cat meow. I asked him when he got a cat. Before we got engaged, I once wanted a dog. Adrian told me he was allergic to pet hair, so I gave up the idea. That night, he told me I must have imagined the sound and quickly ended the call. Now the cat was standing right in front of me. Which meant it had already been here three months ago. And so had Lila. So Adrian wasn’t allergic to pets. He was only allergic when the pet belonged to me. My stomach turned. Looking at him suddenly made me sick.
