I wanted to hire a postpartum caregiver to help me recover after giving birth. However, my husband suggested having my mother-in-law come to take care of me. After she arrived, every meal she made was dry bread—for an entire week. I assumed she just couldn't cook, so I figured I'd wait a couple more days until I felt stronger and start cooking for myself. Then one morning, my husband called to say he'd be home for lunch, and his mother immediately went to the grocery store. The smell wafted from the kitchen, and by noon the table was loaded with food. The three of us ate lunch together, laughing and chatting like a perfectly happy family, and afterward my husband headed straight back to work. That evening, the only thing on the dinner table was a piece of dry bread. I throw the bread into the trash right in front of her and ordered takeout. She called her son. When he picked up, she didn't say a word. She just started crying. It took several minutes of Gordon asking what was wrong before she finally spoke. "I’m fine, really, I'm fine, it's got nothing to do with Eudora, she treats me well, I'm just... I'm just…" "Never mind… I'm really fine." The second she hung up, my phone rang. I answered and put it on speaker. My husband's furious voice blared from the speaker. "Eudora Fox! What did you do to my mother?!"

"Eudora Fox! What did you do to my mother?!"
……
I'd met plenty of women who knew exactly how to play the victim. But a mother-in-law who could play the victim this well? That was a first.
I didn’t bother answering. I just hung up.
This was something that needed to be settled face to face.
A little over three hours later, Gordon Hardy stormed through the door.
"Gordon, it really has nothing to do with Eudora." His mother hurried over to him. "It's just that I'm old, and there's a lot I can't handle anymore."
"Taking care of the baby and cooking on top of that really wears me out."
"That's the only reason Eudora ended up with bread tonight."
"It's my fault. She threw the bread away. That's fine. I just won't do it again."
"No matter how tired I am from now on, I'll take good care of Eudora and the baby. You go back to work. Don't worry about anything here."
"It's fine if I have to suffer a little. I can't let Eudora and the baby suffer because of me."
Gordon's face hardened.
"Eudora, my mother came here to take care of you through your recovery. Even if you don't appreciate everything she's doing, she's still here taking care of you. What kind of daughter-in-law acts like this?"
I looked at him. "You don't have to shout at me. Your phone's linked to the home security system. Go check the footage. You'll see exactly what happened."
His mother wiped away a tear and stared at Gordon.
"Never mind, I'm really fine. You should get back to work."
"Don't let me come between you two as a couple."
"I've had a hard life, I'm used to it. It's fine."
Gordon didn't so much as glance at the security footage. He just glared at me.
"Eudora, my mother grew up working the land. She's been a simple, hardworking woman her whole life."
"She worked herself to the bone raising me. I swore I'd never let her suffer again."
"No one gets to make her suffer."
"Now you apologize to her. Right now."
"Gordon, being a good son is admirable."
"But... blind obedience is not."
"If you'd just listen to me for once, you'd check the security footage. Then you'd see for yourself what happened in this house instead of standing here arguing with me without knowing the facts."
"And I never made your mother suffer. From the very start, all I wanted was to hire a postpartum caregiver."
Gordon kicked the coffee table. "Eudora, my mother came here out of the goodness of her heart to help us with the baby, and this is the attitude you give her?"
He glared at me. "She's crying her eyes out. Do you think she'd be this upset if you hadn't treated her so badly?"
"Now, you're going to apologize to her."
"Right this second."
"Whoever cries is automatically in the right?" My expression hardened.
"I told you, go check the security footage."
"Footage, footage!" Gordon roared, grabbing his glass of water and smashing it against the camera. "You think giving birth means you get special treatment?"
Chapter 2
"I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to my mother. Right now!"
"Gordon, let it go, really, let it go. Don't fight over me. It's no big deal if I have to suffer a little."
"Mom, stay out of it. I told you, no one gets to bully you. No one."
"Today, she is going to apologize to you."
"Gordon, what if I don't?"
I stared at him.
"Then we'll get a divorce. I'll have you out of this house tonight."
"Gordon, are you going to listen to me or not?" my mother-in-law,Kathleen, tugged at his arm. "Come outside with me first."
The two of them walked out, but a knot of anger remained lodged in my chest, refusing to go away.
I couldn't help thinking of the things Gordon had told me before I first met his mother.
His father had died young, and his mother had raised him alone. She'd had a hard life.
His greatest wish was to give his mother a good life, to make sure she never suffered again.
I was touched by how devoted he was to his mother, and I promised to take care of her with him.
I'd never lifted a finger for housework growing up, but before I first met his mother, I spent three months learning how to cook.
Every visit to her house, I was the one who handled the cooking.
I'd even suggested that Gordon hire someone to help take care of her.
Gordon said his mother would never agree to that, that she couldn't stand wasting money on unnecessary luxuries.
Just like this time, when I wanted to hire a postpartum caregiver, and he said the same thing.
And what came of it?
His mother did come.
But every little thing the baby needed still fell on me. The days were exhausting enough, and the nights left me utterly drained. I had to get up several times a night to feed the baby and change diapers.
By day I honestly had no energy to cook, and when the baby slept I only wanted to catch up on some sleep myself.
I said nothing about any of it. After all, I was the mother. Taking care of my own child was my responsibility.
I was trying to spare my mother-in-law's pride—and Gordon's too.
I swallowed it all and never told him, and I never brought up hiring a postpartum caregiver again.
But after a full week of nothing but dry bread, my body was starting to give out.
What I hadn't expected was that the moment his mother cried, Gordon wouldn't even bother finding out what had really happened.
There were security cameras in the house that he refused to check, and he used divorce to force an apology out of me.
Did he really think I'd just let him walk all over me?
I didn't know what the two of them were discussing out there, or what they intended to do next.
But I knew what I needed to do next.
I made a phone call. "Mr. Finch, arrange for someone to take over the projects Gordon's been running. Immediately."
"Now send legal and finance over here."
"And bring Mr. Jayden too. I'm hungry, I want some of his cooking for dinner tonight."
"Arrange three postpartum caregivers to work in shifts around the clock. They will only be responsible for the baby."
I'd barely hung up when Kathleen came in.
Her tears were gone. She held her chin high and looked at me defiantly.
"If I hadn't talked Gordon into going back to work today, you'd be out on the street this minute, with that baby in your arms."
"You married into a wealthy family. You'd best know your place."
"Don't start thinking you're some pampered heiress just because you married into this family."
"Give me a break."
She kicked at the trash can. "Now fish that piece of bread out of there and eat them."
"Otherwise, I'll call Gordon right now."
"And once he's back, the only thing left for you will be getting kicked out of this house."
The truth was, I really was a spoiled heiress, born with a silver spoon in my mouth.
It wasn't until my parents died when I was twenty that my life changed.
At twenty, I took over the family conglomerate, and by the time I graduated from college, I'd already built a business empire of my own.
At twenty-five, I met Gordon.
Chapter 3
He treated me well, and he was capable too, so I gradually gave him more authority and let him take on more of the family business.
To protect his pride, I never once revealed my true identity to any of his relatives or friends.
In front of his family and friends, he was the self-made success story who had supposedly built everything from the ground up.
And I was the lucky woman who had married into a wealthy family.
I looked at my mother-in-law. "Gordon said you were a reasonable woman who always knew how to put the bigger picture first."
"I never expected it would be like this. If you really don't want to take care of me, you can hire a postpartum caregiver."
"Hire a caregiver? Look at you. You really think you can afford to hire someone?"
"Do you think it's easy for my son to earn money?"
She glared at me. "Do you have any idea how hard Gordon works for every cent?"
"I've scrimped and saved for that boy at every turn, not so you could squander what he works so hard to earn."
I could hardly believe how shameless she was. "What did you said?"
"You've got two good arms and two good legs, and the second you married my son, you thought you'd get to live like some pampered rich wife?"
"Let me tell you, if you want to be a pampered wife, you'll have to get past me first."
"If you want to live comfortably in this house, you'd better keep me happy."
"Now be a good girl and eat every bite of that bread out of the trash."
I looked at her calmly. "Go ahead and call Gordon. There's no way I'm eating that."
"You brought this on yourself. We'll see how Gordon deals with you when he gets home."
The moment those icy words left her mouth, she put on an entirely different expression. She quickly slipped back into her tearful act and dialed Gordon.
Just like before, she cried for a few minutes before she said a word.
"Gordon, find Eudora a postpartum caregiver. I'm getting on in years, and I just can't take good care of her and the baby anymore."
"Don't blame Eudora. It's just that your mother is old and not much use anymore."
"I'll pack my things and go right now. I won't be a burden to you two."
"No, don't come here. Eudora's a good girl. It's just that I'm no longer capable enough to take care of her."
"I'm just a farmer. This is the life I'm used to. Let me go now, I've got to pack. I won't be an eyesore around here anymore."
This time Gordon didn't call me. A short while later, the lock turned, and Gordon stormed into the room.
I said nothing. I'd already connected my phone to the TV.
I tapped the video to play.
The footage showed everything my mother-in-law had done after Gordon left.
He refused to look at the security footage, so I played it for him myself.
I watched him. I wanted to see what choice he'd make when the truth was right there in front of him, impossible to deny.
"I was wrong. I'm sorry."
"I will kneel and beg for your forgiveness."
My mother-in-law suddenly dropped to her knees, her forehead hitting the floor with a hard thud.
I was stunned.
"Are you satisfied now?"
Gordon stared at me, his voice thick with barely contained fury.
"You used your precious 'truth' to drive my mother to her knees. Are you satisfied?"
His voice rose to a roar.
"Gordon, what do you mean, am I satisfied?"
"Is this my fault?"
"My mother is already on her knees, and you're still trying to make this my fault?"
"Gordon, don't hit Eudora. It's my fault, it's all my fault."
I saw Gordon's eyes go red, his fists clenching at his sides.
"Whatever you do, don't hit Eudora. She's your wife, the one who'll spend the rest of your life with you."
"I’m old, I'm just dead weight. I'll go now, I'll never trouble you two again."
Gordon lost it. He lunged at me.
I sensed the danger and had barely started to rise when his foot slammed into me.
The kick sent me crashing into the sofa, and he was on me before I could react.
One hand clamped around my throat while the other struck my face again and again.
His gaze was so cold and unfamiliar that I barely recognized the man in front of me.
I fought with everything I had, grabbing whatever I could get my hands on and throwing it at him.
But he was far stronger than I was. I couldn't break free no matter how hard I fought.
I could barely breathe. My vision was going red.
"Stop! stop!"
"It's my fault. Gordon, stop hitting her."
"Gordon, you're going to strangle her! Let go!"
"It's okay if I have to suffer a little. Let her go. She's really about to die."
"You want me to lie to the police for you? You want me to tell them she fell down the stairs and died?"
The moment she'd dropped to her knees earlier, I'd known exactly what kind of person she was. And the instant those words left her mouth, I felt Gordon's grip tighten around my neck.
Both his hands were clamped around my throat, as if he meant to kill me.
My parents were dead. My baby wasn't even a month old.
If I died, Gordon could make up whatever story he wanted.
And then the conglomerate would all be his.
Panic tore through me, but there was nothing I could do. I knew this was the end.
