My Surgeon Wife Chose Her Ex Over My Dying Mother

Theater: NovelMaster  |  Language: English  |  NEW

Synopsis

My wife was the city's top orthopedic trauma surgeon.
When my mom was hit by a truck and shattered her leg, the emergency attending told me only Chief Surgeon Serena could save it.
Desperate, I dialed my wife's phone, but the man who answered was Sean—her childhood sweetheart, the one she never got over:
"Is this Serena's husband? She's busy. If you need something, just tell me."
I didn't have time to wonder why they were together or what they were doing. Panicked, I blurted:
"Tell her to get back to the hospital right now! My mom was hit by a car, her leg is mangled, and she needs Serena to operate!"
After a long silence, my wife's impatient voice finally came through the line:
"Brandon, Sean cut his hand. I just came over to bandage it up for him. Do you really have to sink so low as to use your own mother to lie to me?!"
With that, she slammed the phone down. When I called back, it went straight to voicemail.
That day, by some miracle, my mom kept her leg. But my heart died completely.
When the police called and I rushed to the scene, my mom was already lying in a pool of blood, her right leg twisted into an unnatural shape.
My eyes burned instantly.
My parents had divorced when I was young. Mom had worked day and night, juggling multiple jobs to raise me on her own. She had endured so much hardship for my sake.
Once I finally built a good life, I brought her to the city so she could relax and enjoy her golden years. Instead, she ended up taking care of both me and my wife.
If she hadn't ridden her e-bike all the way across town just to buy the fresh tiger prawns Serena loved, she never would have been hit.
A knife twisted in my gut. I wished with all my soul that I had been the one crushed on the asphalt.
At the hospital, the doctors shook their heads. The deformity was severe, the nerves and blood vessels mangled. They warned that amputation was likely.
It hit me like a thunderbolt. I couldn't accept this nightmare.
I dropped to my knees, begging the doctor through choked sobs, "Please, I'm begging you. Save my mom's leg. I’ll pay whatever it takes!"
The doctor quickly helped me up, hesitating before saying:
"If Dr. Serena Vance handles this reconstruction, there's a strong chance we can save the limb. But she's off duty today."
A spark of hope flared in my chest. "I’ll find her! She’s my wife!"
The doctor looked startled, then quickly urged me to bring her back as fast as possible before hurrying away.
With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone and dialed Serena.
She had mentioned going out to run errands earlier, but she should have been home by now.
The phone rang and rang, but no one picked up.
My heart leaped into my throat. Just as I was on the verge of losing my mind, the call finally connected.
Yet the voice on the other end didn't belong to my wife. It was Sean, her first love.
"Is this Serena's husband? She's busy right now. If you need something, just tell me."
My heart thudded violently, but I didn't have the luxury to wonder why they were together or what they were doing.
All I could say was a frantic plea: "Put her on the phone! My mom was hit by a car, and she needs Serena to operate right now!"
I thought Serena would agree immediately and race back.
Instead, after a cold pause, her annoyed voice came through:
"Brandon, Sean injured his hand. I only came over to bandage it up. Do you really have to sink so low as to use your mom to lie to me?!"
"No! I'm not—"
A chill seized my chest. Before I could explain, she slammed the phone down.
When I dialed again, it went straight to voicemail.
My eyes widened in disbelief, and my entire body shook as I collapsed onto the cold hospital floor.
Serena knew better than anyone how much my mother meant to me. How could she possibly think I’d curse my own mother to play some petty game?!
How could she just hang up on me? Did she really want my mom to lose her leg?
No. Absolutely not!
Right then, the attending doctor ran back over anxiously. "How did it go? Did you reach Chief Vance?"
Numbness washed over me. "No... I couldn't..."
The doctor frowned. "You're her husband. Go to her place and bring her here right now. We're running out of time."
"I’ll do my best to debride the external wounds first, but when it comes to reconstructing the nerves and vessels, Dr. Vance is the only expert. You must get her back here!"
Those words snapped me out of my daze. I thanked her repeatedly, begged her to stabilize my mom, and stumbled out into the street.
In that moment, only one thought possessed my mind: no matter how low I had to beg, I had to bring Serena back.
As long as it saved my mom's leg, I'd do anything. It wasn't until I started the car that I realized I had no idea where Sean lived.
I had to call through a list of Serena’s old college classmates before I finally tracked down his address.
Her friends asked what was going on, but I was too humiliated to explain. What was I supposed to say? That I was hunting down my wife at another man’s apartment?
I could only force an awkward laugh and mutter an excuse.
I kept redialing Serena’s number the entire drive over, speeding toward Sean's place.
The calls kept going straight to voicemail. The moment I arrived, I sprinted upstairs and pounded frantically on his door.
Sean opened it. He was wearing nothing but boxers, scowling irritably:
"Who the hell is it?! Buzz off, you're ruining my mood!"
When he saw it was me, his expression shifted, turning shifty. "What are you doing here?"
I didn't have time to argue with him. All I cared about was getting Serena to save my mother.
"Where is Serena?!" I gasped. "It’s an emergency!"
Instead of letting me in, Sean’s immediate instinct was to slam the door shut.
Panic surged through me. I shoved him aside and barged in, only to be greeted by a scene that nearly made my eyes bleed.
My wife was sitting on Sean's bed, her clothes disheveled, a fresh, vivid hickey clearly visible on her neck.
Seeing me, she immediately went on the offensive: "Brandon! Did you track me?!"
At that point, no matter how panicked I was, it was glaringly obvious what they had been doing.
My vision flashed crimson as I glared at her. "You said his hand was hurt? You said you were bandaging him up?"
"Do you bandage someone up in his bed?! Do you have any idea how desperately I was looking for you?! My mom is—"
Before I could finish, her hand cracked across my cheek.
"Brandon! Watch your filthy mouth!" she hissed, furious. "Look at him—Sean really is hurt."
"How can you be so callous? Inventing a lie about your own mother just because you're throwing a pathetic, jealous tantrum like a petty little boy!"
At the mention of my mother, the image of Mom lying in that pool of blood flashed before my eyes, tearing my heart to pieces.
The pain jolted me back to reality. No matter how furious I was, I couldn't afford to push Serena away. My mom was still waiting on that operating table.
Swallowing the searing humiliation, I begged softly:
"Serena! Mom was in a terrible crash. The doctors said only you can save her leg. Please, come to the hospital with me right now."
Serena hesitated for a second, glancing at me. But Sean stepped forward, his voice dripping with venomous sarcasm:
"It's all my fault. I shouldn't have been so clumsy and hurt my arm, making Serena come all this way."
"Brandon, if you want her to go home with you, just say so. There's no need to put a curse on your own mother. We're both men here—I get it, you're insecure."
As he spoke, he made a show of raising his slightly scraped forearm.
I snapped, shouting at him, "Shut the hell up! I'm talking to my wife! This is none of your damn business!"
Serena's brow furrowed in fury. "Brandon! Don't you dare talk to Sean like that! He's the one trying to help you and telling me to go home!"
"Why do you always have to cause a scene?! Clinging to me 24/7 like a needy child, and now resorting to such sick lies? You're disgusting!"
Knowing my mom was waiting, tears stung my eyes. I had no choice but to swallow my pride and plead again:
"Serena, I swear to God I'm not lying! Just come to the hospital with me and see for yourself! Or call the hospital yourself to verify!"
Her expression softened slightly, and she parted her lips to speak.
Right then, Sean let out a theatrical wince. "Ouch... damn, why does it hurt again?"
Serena immediately turned her back on me, rushing to Sean's side. She took his hand, whispering softly, checking on him as if I didn't even exist.
Fury exploded in my chest. I charged forward, grabbed Sean by his collar, and smashed my fist into his face.
"Sean, you piece of garbage! Why do you keep sabotaging my mom's chance to live?! Do you know she's waiting for surgery right now?!"
I hated him with every fiber of my being. My mom’s life was on the line, and this scumbag was deliberately playing games.
If looks could kill, I would have shredded him to pieces right there!
Sean tumbled dramatically to the floor, and Serena rushed over, horrified and full of pity, to help him up.Serena lunged to slap me again, but Sean caught her wrist.
He let out a heavy sigh. "Serena, don't. He's your husband. Whatever he does, he just wants your attention."
"It's my fault for keeping you here. I thought because we grew up together as sweethearts, he'd understand our bond. I never imagined he'd misunderstand like this."
"You... you should go back with him. I'll be fine on my own."
Serena looked at him with profound affection. "Sean, you're always thinking of me. Unlike someone who only knows how to throw tantrums and curse his own mother to death!"
She turned her eyes on me, ice-cold and haughty. "If you want me to leave with you, fine. But you will apologize to Sean right now, and you will mean it!"
My face went pale with rage. But the thought of my mother on that hospital bed forced my head down.
I looked at Sean and forced out three bitter words: "I am sorry."
A mocking smirk tugged at the corner of Sean's lips. "You punch me in the face and think a casual 'sorry' cuts it?"
I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms, grinding out, "What do you want?!"
Sean looked at me with cold amusement. "That depends on how sincere you actually are."
I turned my bloodshot eyes toward Serena, but she only sneered, "Don't look at me. You hit him first. You owe him a real apology!"
The last ember in my heart went cold.
Once upon a time, Serena and I had been the couple everyone envied.
We built our home together, and she was always respectful to my mom. We were a happy family.
But the moment her childhood sweetheart Sean returned to town, everything shattered.
Her heart wasn't in our home anymore. It was here, with Sean!
I let out a hollow, tragic laugh. For my mother, I had to throw away every shred of my pride.
My knees buckled, and I dropped straight to the floor in front of Sean.
"I'm sorry!" I choked out, humiliated to the core. "Are you happy now?!"
Sean smiled smugly. "Hey, come on now. I never asked you to get on your knees. What are you doing? Get up."
Serena frowned with deep distaste. "Get up right now! Sean never asked you to kneel. Who are you trying to embarrass?!"
I pushed off the floor and slowly stood, my voice dead. "Can we go save my mom now?"
Serena’s face was dark. She grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the front door.
A flicker of wild relief washed over me. I thought she had finally come to her senses and agreed to go to the hospital.
Yet the second we reached the doorway, before I could even breathe a sigh of relief, she shoved me violently backward. I slammed hard onto the hallway floor.
She looked down at me in disgust. "You're still trying to keep up the charade?! I never realized what a manipulative actor you were! I really underestimated you!"
By the time I scrambled to my feet, the door had already slammed shut in my face.
I threw myself against the door, pounding with all my strength. "Serena! How could you lie to me?! You swore that if I apologized, you'd come with me!"
Serena's muffled voice drifted through the wood: "You lied to me first, so I'm paying you back! That’s what you get for telling such sick lies! Now get the hell away from here!"
Tears burst from my eyes, and a desperate scream tore from my throat: "No! Please! I swear to God I'm not lying!"
I collapsed against the door, hammering it with my raw fists, weeping hysterically.
"Come out! Serena! I'm begging you, please save my mom..."
Inside, music started playing, loud and muffled, drowning out every plea I had left.
At that moment, the pain in my chest went entirely numb. Whatever love I had ever harbored for Serena died on that doorstep, replaced by a dark, suffocating hatred!
Just then, my phone rang. It was the hospital.
"Mr. Miller, whether you found Chief Vance or not, you need to come back immediately. We cannot delay the patient's surgery any longer. You must sign the consent forms!"
I wiped away the tears, my gaze fixing on that closed door with venomous intensity.
If anything happened to my mother, I would never let them off the hook!
I would never, ever forgive Serena for the rest of my life!
