Synopsis
The guy I had a secret crush on for three years became a global pop sensation after I died.
And me? I was labeled the internet’s most pathetic clout-chaser, cyberbullied into severe depression until a car struck me down in the street.
The driver was my former best friend.
Sitting behind the wheel, she looked down at me bleeding on the asphalt, laughing hysterically.
"Nora, you really are clueless, aren't you?
Back in college, I swapped that confession letter you wrote to Chase. I painted myself as the innocent victim you bullied.
Why else do you think he hired me as his personal assistant?"
As my consciousness slipped away, the dashboard screen was playing the music video for Chase’s record-breaking single.
He stood at the top of the world, dazzling under the spotlights.
While I lay there like roadkill in a gutter.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back in our junior-year dorm room.
My roommate, Vanessa, was leaning over me with a can of Coke, smiling with fake concern.
"Nora, have you figured out how you're going to confess to your crush yet?"
The suffocating ache in my chest and the phantom agony of bones crushed beneath car tires still lingered.
I snapped back to reality, realizing I was sitting at my desk in the dorm.
I held a pen in my hand. On the stationery in front of me was an unfinished sentence:
"Chase, I’ve had my eye on you for a long time..."
Vanessa’s face was practically glued to mine. She blinked her innocent-looking doe eyes, her voice dripping with coaxing sweetness.
"Letters are so outdated! Nobody does that anymore.
Listen to me. Post it on the Campus Confession Wall! It’s trendy and romantic. I’ll even take a picture of you, make you look like an absolute angel!"
I lowered my gaze to hide the surge of hatred burning inside me. I crumpled the paper into a tight ball and tossed it into the trash.
In my past life, I had fallen for her lies.
Chase worked as an assistant at our campus library. Quiet and gorgeous, he always wore a simple, faded white shirt, carrying an aloof grace that felt as pure and cold as winter snow.
I had crushed on him for three years, only ever daring to watch him from afar.
It was Vanessa who kept whispering in my ear, telling me a girl needed to be bold, saying that if I didn't make a move on a guy like Chase, someone else would snatch him away.
She wore me down. Gathering every ounce of courage I had, I wrote a heartfelt confession letter, paired it with what I thought was my best casual photo, and trusted Vanessa to submit it anonymously to the campus forum.
The next morning, I became the laughingstock of the entire university.
What went up on the confession page wasn't my nice picture, but a hideous candid snapshot taken during Freshman Orientation Week. It was snapped at an awful angle—my face greasy, expression contorted. Worse still was the trashy, shameless caption attached to it:
[Chase from Computer Science, I’ve wanted you for a long time. I heard your family runs a massive company and you're loaded. I’m tired of working hard. I’d rather cry in the front seat of your BMW. Give a girl a chance?]
That hideous photo was taken by Vanessa behind my back.
Those vulgar words were drafted maliciously by Vanessa.
The moment the post went live, it blew up the campus network.
I instantly became the campus poster child for vanity, gold-digging, and shameless delusion.
[WTF, who is this chick? Looking like that and daring to hit on Chase?]
[Cry in a BMW? She doesn't even deserve a ride on a rusty tractor.]
[Chase, run! Touch this girl and you’ll catch a virus!]
Everywhere I went, people pointed and whispered behind my back.
My social media accounts were doxed. My SnapChat and Instagram DMs overflowed with vile slurs and death threats.
And Chase? He never reached out to me. The way he looked at me shifted from indifferent stranger to icy disgust.
I shattered completely, spiraling into clinical depression.
And what was Vanessa doing during all that?
She sighed in front of me every day, feigning sympathy, insisting someone else was maliciously setting me up, even pretending to curse out the trolls on my behalf.
Behind my back, she took my original, heartfelt letter and handed it directly to Chase.
She told Chase she was the one who wrote it, that she had loved him in silence for years.
She even claimed that the repulsive post on the confession page was made by me to sabotage her, out of jealousy that she liked him too.
She painted herself as the innocent, fragile victim of my bullying.
How ridiculous.
It took dying once for me to see through her masterfully crafted web of lies.My heart felt as if an invisible hand were crushing it, squeezing the air from my lungs.
I took a slow, deep breath and forced a faint, fragile smile at Vanessa.
"Vanessa, you're right. Letters are pretty old-fashioned. Your idea is way better. Let's do the Confession Wall!"
Her eyes lit up instantly.
"Of course! Leave everything to me!"
I dipped my head shyly, lowering my voice to a whisper. "The thing is... I'm not really good at writing that kind of stuff, and none of my photos look that great."
"Oh, that's easy!" Vanessa patted her chest proudly. "I'll edit the text for you! And I'll take the photos! I promise you, once Chase sees it, he'll be head over heels!"
"Really? Vanessa, you’re the best friend in the world!"
I looked up, staring at her with wide, grateful eyes, letting just the right amount of tears well up.
Vanessa's ego puffed up like a balloon. She raised her chin smugly.
"We're besties! Your business is my business!"
I nodded, laughing coldly on the inside.
Yeah, besties.
If I don't drag you down into hell this time, I wouldn't be doing justice to the nightmare you gifted me in my last life.
I pulled over our shared dorm laptop and opened a blank document.
"Vanessa, could you look at this? Does this sound okay?"
I intentionally typed out clumsy, awkward sentences, perfectly acting the part of an insecure girl terrified of confessing to her crush.
Vanessa watched the screen and snorted with laughter.
"Oh, Nora, this is way too... blunt. There’s zero charm to it. Here, move, let me show you how it’s done."
She eagerly grabbed the keyboard and began hacking away at the text.
I stood behind her, watching every single letter she hammered out. The frost in my eyes deepened.
She erased all my genuine compliments, swapping them for tacky, superficial lines designed to highlight Chase's supposed wealth.
Perfect. Exactly like last time.
Once she finished her "polishing," I saved the file with effusive thanks, then made an excuse to take a shower, leaving the laptop in her hands.
What she didn't notice was my phone, propped up at a hidden angle, silently recording the entire screen.
Keep acting, Vanessa.
I’m going to make sure your performance gets the grand stage it deserves. The next morning, I deliberately slept in.
By the time I finished getting ready, Vanessa was already sitting at her desk in full glam, waiting for me.
The second she saw me, she leaped up with dramatic excitement.
"Nora! What took you so long? I already submitted the post to the Confession Wall! Go check it out right now!"
Underneath her excited tone lay barely concealed malice and glee.
Pretending to be clueless, I nervously opened my phone and tapped into the campus forum.
Pinned right at the top in bold red letters was the headline:
[Delusional CS Girl Thinks She Can Bag a Millionaire: Public Callout to Chase!]
I clicked on it. The main image was that god-awful snapshot from Freshman Orientation Week.
Under the scorching sun, my face was shiny with sweat, teeth bared, expression looking like an abstract Picasso disaster.
Below the photo was the vulgar, gold-digging caption Vanessa had concocted.
The comment section was already in flames, racking up over a thousand replies in just one hour.
[Jesus Christ! My eyes! Somebody bleach my eyes!]
[That greasy face, that cursed grin... Which major let this monster loose?]
[Wants to cry in a BMW? Chase’s tires are cleaner than her face.]
[Saved the photo. Next time someone pisses me off, this is getting sent to their inbox.]
Mocking memes made from my photo flooded the thread. The entire forum had turned into a cruel circus, and I was the freak tied to the stake for everyone’s amusement.
Our other two roommates saw the post too. When they looked at me, their eyes were filled with pity mixed with thinly veiled disgust.
"Nora... what is this? Did someone prank you?"
Vanessa instantly launched into her routine. She wrapped her arms around me, trembling with indignation.
"This is sick! How could people say such awful things about our Nora? That photo was definitely edited! And the text is complete slander! Don't be scared, Nora, I’ll help you talk to the forum admin!"
As she spoke, she snuck a glance at my face, her eyes glimmering with triumphant malice, as if saying: "See? That’s what happens when you try to touch the guy I want."
I trembled from head to toe, my face pale as paper, looking completely shattered. I could barely stay on my feet.
"Vanessa... what do I do...?"
"Don't worry, you have me!" Vanessa rubbed my back, sounding righteous. "We’re going to find the admin right now! We'll make him delete the post, find out who did this, and force them to apologize to you!"
I leaned into her shoulder, my voice choked with tears. "But... we don't even know who runs the page..."
"I do!" Vanessa blurted out. "I looked into it. Word is, the admin is one of the library assistants! Let's go find Chase, he definitely knows who it is!"
Here it was.
Finally.
This was her true objective all along.
All she wanted was an excuse to walk up to Chase looking like the loyal, protective best friend standing up for justice.
I clenched my nails into my palms, using the sharp physical pain to suppress the overwhelming urge to kill her.
"Okay... let's go find him."When Vanessa and I arrived at the library, it was during peak study hours.
The moment we stepped through the doors, the ambient noise died down. Countless eyes snapped toward me, sharp as poisoned needles.
"Look, it’s the BMW girl!"
"Man, she looks even worse in person."
"What's she doing here? Looking for Chase to cash in on that sports car?"
Hushed whispers and blatant snickers washed over me like a tide.
I kept my head down, shaking like a leaf in the wind.
Vanessa, however, walked like a queen, chin held high as if impervious to the hostility. She dragged me straight toward the front desk.
Chase was sitting behind the counter, organizing books.
Sunlight streamed through the window, haloing him in a soft golden glow. His profile was striking, sharp, and breathtakingly aloof.
Hearing the commotion, he looked up.
When his gaze landed on me, the calm in his eyes instantly froze into solid ice.
In my last life, that very look had destroyed me.
Back then, I had lunged forward like a madwoman, babbling incoherent explanations that I didn't write it, that the photo was fake, that it was all a misunderstanding.
My frantic hysterics had only earned his disgust and a cold, flat: "Please leave."
And then, Vanessa had stepped in seamlessly, pulling me back and bowing deeply to Chase with tearful eyes:
"Excuse me, we're here to clear Nora’s name. I know you might know the admin. Please, delete the post. She’s really not like that, she’s having a breakdown!"
What an actress. What a selfless friend.
This time, I wasn't giving her the stage.
Before Vanessa could open her mouth, I took a step forward, cutting right in front of the counter.
I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just lifted my head and met Chase’s frigid stare. My voice wasn't loud, but it cut clearly through the dead-silent reading hall.
"Chase. Regarding that post on the Confession Wall, I have a few things to say."
Everyone froze.
Including Chase, and especially Vanessa behind me.
They probably expected me to burst into tears or run away in humiliation.
Chase’s brows knitted together slightly, a hint of suspicion flickering in his eyes.
I pulled my phone from my pocket, opened the screen recording, and turned the display directly toward him.
"This is a video from last night. It shows my roommate, Vanessa, 'helping' me edit my confession."
From the phone's speaker, Vanessa’s voice rang out crisp and clear:
"‘I’ve had my eye on you for a long time’ is way too boring. It needs to be scandalous... ‘Heard your family runs a big company’—we definitely have to keep that, makes you look ambitious!"
"As for the photo, let’s use this one from Orientation Week. It’s so real! Totally memorable!"
"Done! Let's post it! I swear, by tomorrow, you’ll be the most viral girl on campus!"
The video was barely a minute long.
Yet every single sentence landed like a deafening slap right across Vanessa’s face.
The library fell into tomb-like silence.
Everyone stared in utter shock, their smirks morphing into disbelief.
Vanessa’s face drained of every drop of color.
She lunged forward to snatch my phone, but I dodged her effortlessly.
"Nora! You... you recorded me?!" she shrieked, losing all composure. "Why are you trying to frame me?! I was just joking around with you!"
"Joking?" I scoffed, my cold gaze sweeping over the stunned crowd. "Using my reputation and my dignity as a stepping stone to bag the guy you want... you call that a joke?"
"I didn't!" Vanessa screeched defensively. "I don't even like Chase! I did everything for your own good!"
"Really?" I tapped the phone screen. "Too bad I have another audio file."
I hit play.
It was an audio recording from last night, captured while Vanessa thought I was sound asleep, talking on the phone with her long-distance boyfriend.
