Synopsis

My husband’s first love, Chloe, framed me for a crime, and he, Daniel, sent me to prison. He resented me for "stealing" his virginity, something he had intended to save as a wedding gift for Chloe.
I gave him what he wanted, willingly signing the divorce papers to make way for him and his first love.
But he thought it was just another one of my attempts to hold onto him.
"If that’s what you want, then I'll grant your wish. Don’t forget, without me, you’re worse than a stray dog."
Two years cut off from society, I’d lost interest in almost everything.
Even when I saw Daniel coming to pick me up, there was no longer that familiar rush of intense emotion in my heart.
My assistant subtly took my black handbag.
First, she seemed surprised by its feather-light weight.
Then, she cast a pitying glance my way.
If anyone had visited me during those three years, my clothes wouldn’t have failed to fill even a small handbag.
Seeing me still standing there, frozen, Daniel impatiently frowned.
"Aren’t you going to get in the car? Are you waiting for me to open the door for you?"
"Three years, and you’re still the same miserable person, aren't you?"
That familiar, contemptuous tone.
It made my long-dormant heart ache once more.
I couldn’t believe that after so much time, his words still had the power to hurt me.
The only difference was, I wouldn’t show it on my face anymore…
If he knew, he’d probably mock me even more, tearing my dignity to shreds until he was satisfied.
My dignity was already hanging by a thread. I didn’t want to lose the last shred of decency I had.
But in his eyes, my self-respect was nothing but disposable trash.
Another woman sat in the backseat.
It was Chloe, Daniel's long-time first love.
The moment I got into the passenger seat, she greeted me warmly.
"Alice, long time no see."
I gave her a blank nod in the rearview mirror.
But I must have upset Daniel somehow again.
His anger flared instantly. The next second, his phone came flying at me.
I cried out in pain, clutching the back of my head.
I couldn’t help but let out a low groan.
"Three years, and you still haven’t learned how to respect people!"
"Aren’t prisoners supposed to be put in their place in jail!"
Prison.
A place where all malice converges. A place with clear hierarchies, where the bottom rung is pure darkness. Men and women alike were treated worse than animals there.
I let the bitterness spread through my heart.
The punches that had rained down on me for three years felt like they were replaying right before my eyes.
They unleashed their pent-up malice without restraint, as if inflicting evil on others could somehow wash away their own sins.
Chloe quickly pulled him into a hug, soothing him softly.
"Alice, after all, has been cut off from society for three years. It’s normal not to be familiar with social interactions. Don’t worry about it, Daniel. I’ll make sure to guide Alice properly after this."
"After all, she once loved you, didn't she? I always have a soft spot for anyone who genuinely loves and cares for you."
Chloe’s eyes were sincere.
Daniel’s eyes reddened with emotion.
He leaned into her embrace, rubbing his head against her, as intimate as a true family.
"If it weren’t for that bitch getting in the way, I wouldn’t have missed out on so much with you."Watching Chloe’s gentle demeanor, Daniel looked like he wanted to kill me.
If I hadn't drugged him that night, he never would have slept with me!
Chloe, both helpless and heartbroken, kissed Daniel’s forehead.
"It’s okay. I’m satisfied just being by your side."
"Daniel, I love you."
On our first wedding anniversary, I unexpectedly received a text from Daniel, inviting me to celebrate our anniversary at home.
I was thrilled.
I thought this marriage, which I’d been fighting for alone, finally had a glimmer of hope.
I always knew Daniel didn't love me.
If it wasn't to save his family's struggling business, he would never have married me.
But that night, he wasn’t as cold as before.
Instead, he poured every bit of his soul’s passion into every part of my body.
Until we succumbed to the passion together.
He blurted out, "My darling Chloe, I love you."
Only then did I realize that Chloe had announced her new boyfriend that same night.
And I became the sinner.
Daniel hated me fiercely.
"You knew I was still in love with someone else, so why didn’t you push me away!"
He furiously threw everything he could find at me.
But that night, "he" was the one who initiated it.
The old family estate was transferred into Daniel’s name the day I went to prison.
Alfred, the butler, walked hesitantly in front of me.
No matter how much he wanted to talk to me, he had to be careful of Daniel’s temper, as Daniel was now the master of the house.
Not long ago, someone who failed to iron Chloe’s clothes on time was fired by Daniel, who then blacklisted them in the industry.
"You’ve been through so much."
Old Alfred still cared about me.
While Daniel and Chloe went upstairs to change, he quickly led me to the garden and slipped an envelope into my hand.
I looked up in surprise.
I couldn’t bring myself to take the old man’s money.
"If it hadn't been for your help back then, my granddaughter might not be here today. This money is rightfully yours; please take it."
It was the card I’d given him for his granddaughter’s medical treatment.
I clutched it tightly.
Ultimately, faced with my current hardship, I put it in my pocket.
As long as I still breathed, Daniel would only feel disgust for me.
My former room in the old estate had been converted into his pet room.
But he only allowed me to stay in that room, sharing it with his dog.
He was trying to humiliate me this way.
But he didn’t know that even a pet room was infinitely better than the conditions I’d lived in for the past two years.
His eyes were solely for Chloe, as he pulled her into his embrace.
"Our room is right next door, Chloe and I will be there. You’ll stay here tonight, and don’t you dare go anywhere else or disturb our rest."
"Even if you hear… anything, don’t get any ideas, Alice. Remember your place now."
"The current you isn’t even worthy of bargaining with me."
He looked at me as if I were a hardened criminal.
But when he looked at Chloe, his eyes were always overflowing with affection.
In the past, I might have felt heartbroken by it.
But now, my heart was like stagnant water.
After all, my plan for returning was to get a divorce. The first night back at the old estate, I spent it listening to Daniel and Chloe’s low moans. They were like wild animals, unleashing their deepest desires into the late-night air.
"Daniel, I regret it. I regret letting Alice have you all these years."
"I’m realizing I can’t live without you."
These words, indistinguishable from a declaration of love, deeply moved Daniel. He had waited so long to hear them.
"Chloe, me too. Every day I was with Alice, I felt disgusted."
"Thank God I finally waited for you…"
This was his warning to me.
Only they were the perfect match in this world.
And I was merely an intrusive invader.
"Daniel, aren’t you afraid Alice will get angry?"
"Why would she? She could never bring herself to get angry at me. In her heart, I’m more important than her own life."
"She’s just a desperate doormat."
The next morning, I knocked on the bedroom door next door.
Thanks to my old legal background, I had prepared the divorce papers overnight.
As if to deliberately provoke me, Daniel opened the door, casually wrapped in a towel, his body covered in obvious marks of intimacy.
He held his head high, his eyes disdainful.
"What do you want?"
I silently averted my gaze and handed him the papers.
"I’m here for a divorce."
Daniel laughed absurdly, as if he’d heard the greatest joke in the world.
"You?"
"Divorce me?"
He crossed his arms, his tone full of doubt.
"Alice, what right do you have to bring this up with me?"
Chloe wrapped her arms around Daniel’s waist from behind.
They were openly intimate in front of me, completely ignoring my presence, like two wild animals in heat.
After a long moment, Daniel finally bothered to spare me a bit of his attention.
"Alice, you want a divorce? Fine."
"Get down on your knees and beg me."
I froze.
I hadn’t expected Daniel to make such a difficult demand.
I didn’t understand. He already had his loved one by his side, so why was he deliberately making things hard? Shouldn’t he, like me, want to end this marriage quickly?
Seeing my prolonged silence, Daniel sneered.
"I knew this was just another one of your tricks."
"Are you upset that I’m sleeping with other women? If you can’t handle it, then move out, you useless waste of space."
"I’d like to see where you’ll go after leaving me."
He crushed my dignity to smithereens.
The two most important things to a woman—my reputation and my dignity—had been shattered because of him.
"Do you hate me that much?" I asked unconsciously, voicing the doubt in my heart.
Daniel nodded without hesitation.
"Yes, seeing you makes me physically ill."
I took a heavy breath, pulling the divorce papers back.
And with them, I pulled away the last flicker of hope I had for him.
Since he showed no mercy, I had no reason to wallow in those tiny illusions anymore. The law firm I’d opened before, due to my sudden imprisonment, now only had one partner left. It was almost laughable. A lawyer, sent to prison by her own husband. Perhaps the greatest joke in the world.
When my friend, Sarah, heard me say I was getting a divorce, she burst into a relieved laugh.
"You finally came to your senses! Don’t worry, this time I swear I’ll help you get everything back."
"Including your reputation."
Two years ago, if I hadn’t voluntarily given up my chance to defend myself, perhaps I wouldn’t have ended up in such a desolate state.
But that truth only dawned on me two years after love had stripped me bare.
Thanks to Alfred’s card, I rented a small one-bedroom apartment outside.
When Daniel realized I wasn't just putting on an act, a rare flicker of panic appeared on his face.
"What do you mean?! You’re not coming home, you’re just going to run off and let everyone know I can’t tolerate you?"
I folded the dishcloth with a wry smile, then finally turned to face him.
"Don’t you think it’s bad luck to have a convict living in your house?"
"Don’t worry, your friends will understand. They all dislike me just as much as you do."
In his friends’ eyes, I was always the villain who stole him from Chloe.
Chloe hurried to hug and comfort him.
"Daniel, don’t be angry with Alice."
"Perhaps she’s realized her past mistakes and is afraid to stay by your side anymore."
"If that’s the case, why don’t you just let Alice go, Daniel? Then we can both enjoy our lives together."
Chloe whispered softly into Daniel's ear, one suggestion after another, as if trying to brainwash him.
Convinced by his loved one, Daniel was swayed.
He brushed off his unwarranted feelings of dejection and reverted to his usual disdainful demeanor towards me.
"Chloe’s right, Alice, I agree to the divorce."
"Give me the papers. Sign them today, and we can go our separate ways amicably. It’ll save me from having to look at you and feel sick."
Still as arrogant as ever, he believed I would comply with his every command, just as I always had.
I turned around expressionlessly.
In front of them, I fed the divorce papers into the shredder.
"Too late."
"I’m not planning on a peaceful divorce anymore."
