Synopsis

In the underworld, power is paid for in blood and betrayal.
And I was born to rule.
I survived the back alleys of the Bronx. Then I was adopted by two different mafia families.
The first family's fake daughter cried. She wanted my territory. I smiled. I crushed her. I took every illegal casino and smuggling route in Brooklyn.
The second family's fake heir slit his wrists for pity. I yawned. I took his black Amex. And the keys to the armory.
I won. Clean. Both times. I sent those two idiots to the most dangerous prison on the East Coast.
At twenty, a bloody DNA report showed up. Turns out, I'm the long-lost daughter of the Callahans. The biggest Irish mob in Boston.
My first day at the Callahan estate, the adopted daughter in her innocent white dress knelt at my feet. She clutched her chest, trembling.
"Sister, my heart is weak. I won't live long. All these years, I've been using the family's best black market medical resources. They even spent a fortune from the off-the-books accounts to find me a new heart."
"I feel so guilty. If you think I stole your place, I can just die right now."
My biological mother, Eleanor, screamed. She threw herself over the girl, holding her tight. Shaking and sobbing.
My biological brother, Victor, slammed his gun on the table. He pointed it at me.
"She has a serious heart condition. It's your first day and you're already trying to kill her?"
Even my fiancé—some political match arranged by the old-timers—laughed coldly.
"She sheds one tear, and the arms deal between our families is off. For good."
I didn't flinch. I walked over, slowly. Knelt down. My fingertips wiped away her fake tears. I scanned her heaving chest.
Then I leaned in close to her ear. My voice was a low, mocking whisper.
"Don't be scared, sweetie. I'd never kick you out."
"After all—"
"I’ve seen a lot of fake sisters. Your acting is the absolute worst. You won’t last a week."

Knelt down. My fingertips wiped away her fake tears. I scanned her heaving chest. Then I leaned in close to her ear. My voice was a low, mocking whisper. "Don't be scared, sweetie. I'd never kick you out." "After all—" "I’ve seen a lot of fake sisters. Your acting is the absolute worst. You won’t last a week." Chapter 1 At my low whisper, Chloe's eyes went wide. The next second, her face was ghost-white. She let out a fake gag. She clutched her chest. Collapsed into Eleanor's arms. Gasping for air. “I just... I just feel like I owe you... Why are you threatening me like this...” “Her spray! Get her nitroglycerin spray!” Eleanor let out a heart-wrenching scream. She didn't care about her expensive silk dress. She dropped to her knees on the rug, sobbing uncontrollably. The Callahan family's oldest son, my brother Victor, stood there. His face was stone. He ripped off his tie. He barked at the butler. “Call the mob doctor! Now!” The whole room exploded into chaos. And me? I just stood there. Quietly. Watching these stone-cold killers. Panicking over a bad acting job. A fake heart attack. It was a familiar scene. When I was sixteen, my first family took me in. The adopted daughter there pulled the same shit. Cried to get sympathy. Said she'd give up all her territory. I didn't waste words. I smiled. I called my lawyer. I liquidated all her illegal casinos and smuggling lines. Right then and there. When I was eighteen, my second family took me in. The fake heir there slit his wrists for show. Said he wasn't worthy of the family's fortune. I just smiled again. Took his black Amex. And the keys to the entire armory. Now I'm twenty. Third time's the charm, right? This girl, Chloe... she doesn't even have the balls to scam for turf or slit her own wrist. All she has are a few gasps. Trying to guilt-trip her way into being the victim. So... unoriginal. “Are you just gonna stand there and watch?!” Victor roared. He stomped toward me. His eyes locked on mine. “You haven't been in this house for ten minutes! And you're already using your venom to push a patient to the brink of heart failure!” Victor pointed at Chloe on the floor. His eyes filled with pure disgust. “You're just like some low-life street punk!” I raised an eyebrow. A punk? Back in the Bronx, anyone who called me a punk... I cut out their tongues myself. Fed them to the dogs in the East River. Before I could speak, another arrogant voice cut in. “She's not just a punk. She's a dumbass with a death wish.” Julian strolled over, a glass of whiskey in his hand. Looking down on me. He pointed his chin at me. He used my full name. “Aurora. Listen up.” He swirled his glass. A cold, threatening smile played on his lips. “Get on your knees. Now. Apologize to Chloe for scaring her.” “You don't, and by tomorrow morning, my family makes a public announcement.” He paused. His voice got heavier. “The arms deal between our families... is dead.” The air froze. Eleanor stopped crying. Victor's eyes sharpened. They were all waiting for me to break. To them, losing this alliance was a death sentence. Especially for the 'long-lost heir' who just got back. But I just thought it was a joke. Julian's threat... it just reminded me of something from last month. Some Mexican cartel boss tried to use a marriage to control me. Killian—the Pakhan of the Russian Bratva, my fiercely protective adoptive brother—put a bullet in his head. Just like that. Compared to the sound of Killian's gun, Julian's threats sounded like a yapping chihuahua. I ignored him completely. I slowly lifted the hem of my black trench coat. And pulled out the combat knife strapped to my thigh. Victor's hand flew to the gun on his hip. I didn't even look at them. I took a silk handkerchief from my pocket. Head down. I wiped dried blood off the steel. “Cancel the engagement?” I blew the dust away. I finally looked up. My eyes locked onto his. “Fine.” Julian froze, his proud smile stuck on his face. “What did you say?” “I said, get the hell out. Take your garbage alliance with you.” I held the knife, pointing the tip at the main door. “Get out.” I slid the knife back into its sheath. “Oh, and one more thing. Chloe's carotid artery was beating at seventy times a minute. Her lips weren't blue from lack of oxygen.” “If that was a heart attack,” I looked at Chloe, who froze in Eleanor's arms. “Then I suggest the Callahans find a new mob doctor. Because this one can't even spot a fake.” Chapter 2 The air went dead silent. Chloe's body went stiff for a second. Then she exploded into sobs. Even more dramatic than before. “I wasn't faking! I was just... I was so scared!” She clutched Eleanor's sleeve, tears streaming down her face. “Mom, does she want to kill me? If she wants me dead, I'll die right now!” “Don't talk nonsense!” Eleanor hugged her tighter. Then she shot a look at me. Her eyes were tired. And full of disappointment. “Aurora, you are a massive disappointment.” I stood under the blood-red crystal chandelier. Listening to my own mother judge me. “You don't have a single drop of Callahan honor in you. You're nothing but gutter trash from the slums!” Eleanor accused, heartbroken. Honestly, I felt nothing. In Italy, my adoptive father Silas was afraid I'd be wronged. He blew up half a city block and handed me control of his biggest washing operations. In Russia, my adoptive brother Killian was afraid I'd be bored. He tossed me the keys to his armory like it was a toy. Compared to that, this cheap emotional blackmail from the Callahans... it felt like kids playing house. I looked right at Eleanor. “I did grow up on the streets of the Bronx.” “And nobody there ever taught me how to be best friends with the thief who stole my life.” I smirked. “If you can't stand me, just call a car. Throw me back on the street where I belong. I'll even pay for the ride.” “Shut up!” Victor's face went dark. He'd probably never met anyone like me. Someone who couldn't be bought or broken. In their script, I was supposed to grovel to please them. Or pull a gun out of jealousy over Chloe. Not this. Not stand here like an outsider, laughing at their little show. Victor's face was cold. He pulled a file from his suit jacket. Slammed it on the mahogany table. “Since you keep calling Chloe a thief, then prove it. Prove you didn't come back just for the family fortune.” I glanced down. It was a waiver. For the Callahan family territory. It listed the family's five most valuable smuggling routes. And half their illegal casinos on the East Coast. “Sign it.” Victor's voice was a command. “Give up these core assets. Prove you're clean.” He lifted his chin, like a king tossing a coin to a beggar. “You keep your head down. Stop bothering Chloe. I guarantee you'll have a place in Boston. A roof over your head, food on the table. Enough to live on.” I almost laughed out loud. Threatening me with the things I was supposed to inherit anyway? To prove my innocence? The Callahan's logic was a joke. Robbery, plain and simple. Julian sneered from the side. “You hear that, Aurora? That's the best offer you'll get from Victor.” He swirled his glass, his eyes full of contempt. “Take the deal. Before you end up with nothing. A girl from the gutter like you should be grateful for a place to sleep.” Hearing that, Chloe sat up straight in Eleanor's arms. She wiped away tears that weren't even there. Her face a mask of ‘I'm so hurt but so generous.’ “Brother, don't force her.” Chloe bit her lip, her voice trembling. “I don't want any territory. I just want to be with you all. To see Mom and Dad and you every day... that's all I need...” “You see!” Eleanor's eyes were red with emotion. She glared at me again. “Chloe is willing to give up her life, and all you care about is power and money!” I looked at the three of them. A posturing brother, a fake fiancé, and a drama queen with a terrible script. Did they really think they could leash a wolf who clawed her way out of a pile of bodies? I picked up the blood-stained Montblanc pen from the table. Didn't even read the agreement. I signed “Aurora” on the last page. No hesitation. Victor froze for a second. He clearly didn't expect me to do it so easily. Julian frowned, a flicker of curiosity in his eyes. “Done.” I slammed the pen back down on the mahogany table. It stuck in the wood with a dull thud. “But, Victor.” I looked at him, a faint smile on my lips. “Since I've given up my claim to the Callahan territory...” “...if the Callahan family ever gets its house burned down, don't come crying to me for a gun.” Chapter 3 The next evening. The Continental Hotel in New York. The holy ground for the mob. Lights blazing. The air was tense, electric. Tonight was The Syndicate Gala. The annual meeting of the North American mafia. This was the ultimate power play. Every kingpin, oligarch, and tycoon from the East Coast would be here. Dressed to kill. For the Callahans, this was the most important battle of the year. It decided how many scraps of territory they'd be thrown next year. In the grand hall. Chloe wore a custom-made starlight-blue gown. Her neck held high and proud. I leaned against a marble pillar in the hallway. Hands in my pockets. I wore a black biker jacket. The kind that could stop a small-caliber bullet. The same bloodthirsty knife was strapped to my thigh. In the back alleys of the Bronx, this outfit meant death. To the Callahans, it just screamed ‘slum.’ Chloe walked over to me, holding her dress. She looked me up and down. Gasped dramatically, hand over her mouth. “Oh my god, sister. You're going to wear that to the Gala?” Her eyes were full of fake ‘concern.’ “Everyone who matters in the underworld will be here tonight. Even that terrifying Russian Pakhan from New York might show up. If you wear that, people will laugh at the Callahan family!” Eleanor heard her and rushed down the stairs. Her face was cold. She threw a tacky, sequined red dress at my feet. It was tiny. “Change into this.” Her voice was a command. No arguments. “It was Chloe's. It's old, but it's better than that poor-looking leather jacket! This is not the place for your street-trash style to embarrass us!” I glanced at the red dress on the floor. Pathetically small. Cheap fabric. If I tried to wear it, I wouldn't be able to breathe. I'd look like a cheap dancer from a third-rate club. “Not changing.” I said it calmly. Didn't even look up. “Don't you understand the rules?!” Eleanor snapped. She raised her hand to slap me. “Enough, Mother. You can't teach a street punk about class.” Victor was at the full-length mirror. Coolly adjusting the concealed gun under his suit. He turned around. Looked down at me. “If she wants to wear those rags, let her.” Victor made his decision. Coldly. “Tonight, at the gala, Aurora will enter behind the bodyguards. She is not to go near the main banquet area. Not without my permission.” He paused. His eyes were a clear warning. “To everyone else, we'll say she's a distant relative. A low-level collector. That way, if she makes a fool of herself, it won't reflect on the Callahan name.” A low-level relative. A perfect cover story. They didn't have to acknowledge me, their embarrassing true heir. And it kept Chloe's image perfect. The one and only Callahan princess. “That's very thoughtful, brother.” Chloe let out a sigh of relief. She grabbed my hand, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. “Sister, don't overthink it. He's just trying to protect you. You've never been to an event like this. It's easy to say the wrong thing and offend someone important.” “Once you get used to family life, we'll introduce you to everyone properly.” As she spoke, her eyes landed on my neck. Her pupils shrank. Her eyes lit up. Pure, naked greed. It was my eighteenth birthday present from Killian. A necklace with a blood-red diamond cross. Impossibly rare. Crafted by a master. In the Russian Bratva, this necklace wasn't just priceless jewelry. It was a symbol. The highest power to execute, second only to the Pakhan himself. A power no one could question. It was the tyrant's personal mark. “Sister, your necklace…” Chloe stared at the crimson diamond. It glowed under the light. She swallowed hard. “It's so beautiful.” Eleanor followed her gaze. When she saw the necklace, her face twisted in disgust and contempt. “Beautiful? It looks like cheap glass from a slum pawnshop!” Eleanor pointed at my neck, her words sharp. “Take it off. Now! The real players of the underworld will be there tonight. You want to piss them off by wearing that cheap piece of garbage?!” I almost laughed. Cheap glass? Piss off the big shots? If the owner of this necklace got pissed, the entire New York underworld could disappear overnight. Chloe seized the opportunity. She quickly took off her Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet. “Sister, Mom's right. That necklace is not proper. Why don't we trade? I'll lend you this expensive bracelet to wear. You give me the red cross necklace. I'll just wear it around the house. I don't mind that it's a cheap fake.” She smiled. So innocent. Like a princess giving alms to a beggar. I looked at the bracelet in her hand. Then at the blood-diamond cross on my neck. “Sure.” I obediently unclasped the necklace. Placed it in her hand. “You're the one who asked for it.” I saw the triumphant glint in Chloe's eyes. I added quietly. “I just hope your neck is strong enough.” “To bear the weight of this necklace.” Chapter 4 The Continental Hotel, New York. The Syndicate Gala was in full swing. A red carpet stretched from the door to the main hall. The air smelled of cigars, aged bourbon, and gunpowder. Victor and Eleanor walked in front with Chloe. They smiled and raised their glasses to the mob bosses. The perfect underworld family. And me? I was put with the Callahan bodyguards. I entered through a side door. The staff entrance. “Miss Aurora, you can wait here.” A guard led me to a dark corner of the bar. The very edge of the ballroom. It was near the kitchen and the fire escape. The light from the crystal chandeliers didn't even reach here. “Mr. Victor said you should stay put. To avoid any unnecessary trouble.” The guard recited his lines. Turned and left. Didn't even get me a glass of water. I found a high stool. From here, I could see the whole main floor. Chloe, in her starlight-blue dress, was the center of attention. Surrounded by a circle of mafia princesses. The blood-diamond cross on her neck caught the light, dazzling everyone. “Chloe, that necklace is stunning!” The daughter of some Chicago Outfit boss gasped. “That blood diamond... the shine... it must be a royal treasure from some family they wiped out, right?” Chloe smiled shyly. She touched the cross. “Oh, this? It's just a simple gift.” She didn't say who gave it to her. That vagueness only cemented the rumors. That she was the spoiled, beloved daughter of the Callahans. Julian walked up to her with champagne. He casually put his arm around her waist. The other women around them giggled with envy. The perfect couple. A sight that stung the other heiresses who wanted to get close to Julian's family. “Who's that sitting in the corner? Why is she dressed so shabbily?” Finally, someone noticed me. Chloe turned. Our eyes met across the ballroom. A flash of panic in her eyes. Quickly hidden by a perfect smile. “Oh, that's just a distant relative from my mother's side.” She explained softly to the girls around her. “She just came from the streets. Never seen a place like this. My mom brought her along to see it.” “Oh, so she's one of those poor bastards doing street muscle work.” The girls lost interest. Their voices dripped with contempt. “Chloe, you're too kind. Bringing someone like that here. You'll lower the class of the whole event.” Just then, the heavy doors of the ballroom were pushed open from the outside. The noisy hall went silent. Instantly. A heavy, bloody scent filled the air. Oppressive. The announcer's excited voice boomed over the speakers. “Ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for the man who controls Wall Street's money laundering empire, Mr. Silas!” “And... the most ruthless Bratva boss in New York, Mr. Killian!” The whole room gasped. These two were at the absolute top of the North American underworld. Silas, who controlled the flow of capital. Killian, who held absolute power through violence. They rarely even showed their faces. And tonight, they were both here. Together. Victor's eyes lit up. The Callahans might be number one in Boston. But in front of these ancient, powerful clans, they were nothing. If they could connect with either of these two men, the Callahan family's status would change overnight. “Chloe, let's go.” Victor straightened his tie. He led Eleanor and Chloe toward the inner circle to offer a toast. Julian followed close behind, glass in hand. Everyone was pushing forward. Trying to get noticed by the two titans. Only me. Still sitting in that dark corner. Swirling a glass of bourbon. Silas wore a perfectly tailored suit. His eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses were deep and cold. Killian was in a dark gray trench coat. A lazy, brutal energy about him. They were surrounded by top-tier bosses. But they didn't even glance at them. “Mr. Silas, Mr. Killian.” Victor finally pushed to the front. He raised his glass, his smile perfect. “I'm Victor Callahan. I've heard so much about you both.” Silas stopped. Gave him a passing glance. No response. Killian didn't even look at him. His gaze swept over the crowd. Darkly searching the large room for something. Victor's smile froze on his face. His glass, held mid-air, was painfully awkward. Chloe saw this and quickly stepped forward. Her voice was soft. “Hello, gentlemen. I'm Chloe.” She deliberately showed off the blood-diamond cross on her neck. Trying to get their attention. However. Killian's eyes scanned past her. And stopped dead on her neck. His lazy expression instantly turned to ice. Pure killing intent. He ignored Chloe's greeting. He reached out. Shoved Victor and Julian out of the way with a brutal kick. Dead silence. The two men at the pinnacle of power walked straight through the crowd of armed bodyguards. Step by step. Toward the darkest, most remote corner of the ballroom. Toward me. The one the Callahans called their ‘low-level relative.’ Every eye in the room followed Silas and Killian's path. All focused on that dim corner. Victor stopped breathing. Julian's hand froze, his glass in mid-air. Chloe's sweet smile was frozen on her face. The ballroom was so quiet you could hear a bullet drop. I was still on my high stool. One hand propping up my chin. My fingertips tapping the rim of my empty glass. Killian was the first to reach me. The ruthless Bratva boss froze. His brutal aura vanished. His eyes went completely soft. “My little demon. What are you doing here?”
