Synopsis
My wife was sent overseas on a three-year assignment. Today, I went to the airport to pick her up.
I didn't expect her to walk out holding a six-month-old baby.
My coworkers sneered at me:
"Hey, the kid might not be yours, but at least your wife is still yours, right?"
Right after that, my wife handed me a divorce agreement.
"Just sign it, Logan. Don't stand in my way of becoming a billionaire's wife."
I took the pen and signed my name without hesitation.
The faithful tool has finally woken up. This time, I’m the one throwing her away.
Melanie was my wife, and she was drop-dead gorgeous.
Not long after joining the company, she climbed the corporate ladder fast. Three years ago, she was sent to our European branch.
Before leaving, she told me, "One hundred grand a year for three years. Once I'm back, we’ll be living the good life."
Today was the day she landed back in New York. I took the day off just to pick her up at JFK.
Standing near the gate, I spotted her from a distance.
After three years apart, her curves were a bit fuller, but she looked as stunning as ever.
I waved at her. Then I noticed an older woman walking beside her, carrying a baby.
As they got closer, Melanie took the baby into her arms. I froze for a second, then assumed she was just helping out. She always had a soft heart, I thought.
"Melanie!"
I couldn't help shouting. Melanie walked toward me, but the moment she saw my face, she shoved the baby back to the woman.
"Take him to the car and wait for me."
The baby burst into tears. The woman rocked him gently:
"Hush now, sweetie. Mommy will be right there!"
My mind went blank. Mommy?
I stared at Melanie. "What did she just say? Mommy?"
Melanie’s voice turned cold. "Logan, we need to talk."
She stepped to the side, and I rushed to follow her.
Up close, I noticed the faint scent of baby formula on her. Her posture, her figure—everything about her screamed new mother.
"Melanie, whose kid is that?"
"Don't tell me you went to Europe for three years and popped out a baby!"
Melanie looked completely indifferent.
"You saw it. I'm not going to lie to you. Yes, he's mine. But I'll make it up to you."
"Go home first. Once I deal with work, I’ll call you. That's all for now."
Without another word, she spun on her heels and walked away.
I stood there in utter shock. It took me a long time to snap out of it, and I ran after her.
Just outside the terminal, I saw our CEO, Carter Evans, wrapping his arm around her waist as they climbed into a black Mercedes-Maybach.
Carter Evans!
My heart sank into my stomach.
Three years ago, Carter was also stationed in Europe. Before he left, I even bought him expensive bottles of vintage wine, asking him to look out for Melanie.
Turns out, he looked out for her all the way into his bed!
I clenched my fists until my knuckles turned white. I got into my car and sped straight to the office.
Since she had a baby with her, Melanie was definitely heading home first. Which home? I didn't care. It certainly wasn't mine!
With bloodshot eyes, I marched back into the office. The moment I walked past the break room, I heard people gossiping.
"Melanie's getting promoted the minute she lands. Pretty girls really do climb fast, huh?"
"Well, duh! She gave birth to Carter’s son. Carter can't officially marry her, so he has to compensate her somehow!"
"Logan is such a loser. Living off his wife without shame, literally treating her like a surrogate!"
Their words hit me like a bucket of ice water. Everyone knew Melanie had shacked up with Carter in London—everyone except me!
I was the damn fool, kept in the dark while bragging to them about how much I missed my wife.
I had offered to visit her in London several times, but she always made excuses. She said round-trip flights were too expensive and a waste of time.
She used to say, "Logan, I'm doing all this for our future. Can't you just endure it?"
Endure it?
I endured three years of loneliness, and this was what I got in return.
I cleared my throat. The group turned around, their faces instantly twisting into awkward expressions.
"Logan! Hey... grab, grabbing coffee?"
"Yeah. And listening to your juicy gossip," I replied with a deadpan smile.
Seeing my reaction, one of them, Mark, sneered with faux sympathy.
"Come on, Logan, it's not that big of a deal. Most guys don't even get this kind of opportunity!"
"Think about it. You kept your salary, your wife made bank overseas, and now she’s coming back as a director!"
"How does it feel? Care to share some tips on being a kept man?"He looked at me with pure malice. I knew he had always resented reporting to me. All he ever did was slack off all day.
He was great at kissing ass, though. Another team wanted him, and I was planning to transfer him by the end of the month. Now? I didn't even want to see his face.
But before he left, I needed to teach him a lesson.
I smiled at him. "Actually, I do have a shortcut. Want to hear it?"
I crooked my finger. He leaned in, curious. I lowered my voice and whispered directly into his ear:
"You can always drop your pants and sell yourself on the street, you cheap bastard."
"What did you say?!"
I shrugged. "Didn't you ask for tips? Why get mad when you hear the truth?"
Mark’s face flushed red. "Logan, don't flatter yourself! You're just a shameless cuck.”
“The kid isn't yours, but hey, your wife still is! Once Carter moves to HQ, you can send your wife back to give him another heir. Free money!"
The break room erupted into laughter.
That was the last straw. I lunged forward and threw a heavy right hook straight into his jaw, pinning him to the floor!
His scrawny frame was no match for me. He screamed and begged for mercy under my fists.
The crowd watched in amusement at first, but when they realized I was beating him half to death, they rushed over in a panic to pull me off.
I shook out my bruised knuckles. "Talk about a freeloader again, you little punk!"
"Logan! I'm calling the cops!" Mark shrieked, clutching his bloody nose.
"Go ahead!"
Just then, Carter Evans walked in. "What the hell is going on here? Calling the cops for what?"
"Mr. Evans! Logan attacked me! Look at my face!"
Carter glared at me. "Logan, what is wrong with you? This is an office, not an alleyway!"
"Assaulting a colleague. Your bonus this month is completely wiped!"
Hearing this, Mark sneered, "Logan, pay me eight grand for medical bills, and maybe I won't press charges!"
"Fine, call the cops," I snapped. "You ran your mouth, and I recorded the whole thing on my phone. If this leaks online, nobody in this room looks good!"
Mark was about to lose it, but Carter stopped him. "Enough! Everyone back to work. Mark, in my office. Now."
Mark stomped off after him. I scanned the room with a cold glare. "Anyone else wants to run their mouth, you know where to find me."
"Logan, aren't you afraid of getting fired?" someone whispered.
"Fired?" I scoffed. "Big deal. I can find another job tomorrow. Can you guys say the same in this market?"
Dead silence fell over the room.
If there was one thing I had, it was unmatched competence.
Honestly, if Melanie hadn't begged me to join this firm, I would never have set foot in this place.
Over the past five years, my sales numbers carried half the department. Melanie knew damn well how she made branch manager in the first place.
Over time, though, she actually started believing it was all her own talent.
I wanted to see what kind of game they were playing.
Half an hour later, Mark walked out.
The HR director walked right beside him, watching him pack up his desk. I was genuinely surprised.
"Listen up, everyone," the HR director announced loudly. "Starting today, any unprovoked insults or workplace brawling will result in immediate termination!"
"Mark is the prime example!"
The moment the words landed, all eyes shifted toward me. My heart grew cold. They did this on purpose. They fired Mark just to isolate me and paint a target on my back!
As Mark walked past me, he hissed, "Logan, you traded your wife for a promotion. You disgust me!"I sneered and didn't bother replying. Instead, I stared directly at Carter's office.
The bastard was trying to put me through public humiliation. I marched toward his door, but the HR director blocked my path.
"Wait. Mr. Evans is on a video conference. You can't go in."
I looked down at him coldly. "I just beat Mark half to death and got off clean. If I break your nose right now, do you think Carter will fire me or fire you?"
The HR guy went pale and backed away. Just as I reached for the handle, Carter opened the door.
Seeing me outside, his brow furrowed. "Something you need?"
"Short memory, Mr. Evans? Didn't you and my wife say you owed me an explanation?"
"Or do you prefer to talk about sleeping with my wife right here in front of everyone?"
Carter frowned, checking his watch. "Come with me. We talk outside."
I followed him down to the underground parking garage. Once inside his Mercedes, Carter tossed a thick manila envelope into my lap.
I felt it. About ten grand in cash.
"What is this?"
"Logan, take the cash, keep your head down, and do your job. Drop this whole thing."
"Do my job?" I scoffed, my voice trembling with rage. "You screwed my wife, and you expect me to keep working for you?"
I grabbed him by his designer collar. "Tell me! When the hell did it start?!"
Carter’s face darkened. "You don't need the details. Besides this envelope, there's a card with three hundred thousand dollars on it.”
“A hundred grand a year—you're not walking away empty-handed."
"You have three days. That's my only offer. Every day you delay, I subtract a hundred grand."
I was so furious I saw red. Before I could speak, he shoved my hands off.
"Think carefully before you open your mouth, Logan."
"I run this company now. If you refuse, I'll make sure word gets out that your wife abandoned you. Ruining you in this town will be as easy as crushing an ant!"
He was threatening me.
I gave a bitter laugh, raised my hand, and slapped him across the face!
Then, I dragged him right out of the driver's seat onto the concrete!
Carter was older and taller than me, but he was completely out of shape. He couldn't fight back at all. Within seconds, I slammed him down against the hood of his Maybach.
"Logan, you crazy bastard! I’ll kill you!" he screamed.
I drove my knee hard into his gut. His face instantly drained of color.
I wrapped my fingers around his throat. "Carter, you had the nerve to touch my wife?!"
Before I could land another punch, two security guards tackled me from behind, slamming me against the floor.
Carter scrambled to his feet, wheezing and clutching his stomach. "Call the cops! Call the damn cops!"
"Don't call the cops!"
A voice echoed from the fire exit. Melanie walked out, her high heels clicking on the pavement.
She had been standing there the whole time.
"Let him go," she said calmly. "Let me talk to him."
Carter waved the guards off and climbed back into his car. The guards stepped back a few paces, keeping their eyes glued to me.
My eyes burned as I looked at her. "Tell me he forced you. Just say the word, and I'll drag him through hell to get you justice!"
Melanie rolled her eyes. "Stop being so pathetic, Logan. Let's just end this cleanly."
A suffocating wave of fury rose in my chest.
"Melanie, we've only been married for four years! You spent three of them cheating on me!"
"How could you do this to me?!"
Melanie stayed eerily calm.
"Are you naive, or just stupid? When did our company ever send a rookie woman to lead an overseas expansion?"
Company policy strictly limited international postings to experienced male managers. When Melanie was chosen three years ago, I had been shocked.
She told me she earned it through pure merit. She said her talent broke the rules.
Now, she was using that exact lie to mock my innocence.
She glanced down at her phone. The lock screen was a picture of her, Carter, and the baby. A happy little family.
What a sick joke.
"Logan, you can't give me the life I want. Let's get a divorce."
